A beautiful SECRET place to see in the tuscan countryside: the Crete Senesi | TUSCANY TRAVEL GUIDE
Visit with us one of the most beautiful places in the tuscan countryside, called Crete Senesi!
The crete Senesi are a very wide countryside zone in the south east of Siena. Their name litterally means the clays from Siena and comes from the fact that the soil here is very rich in clay, which gives it a typical grey color.
This place is perfect if you want to go for a walk with your friends during spring or summer or even to ride your bycicle.
The crete senesi offer a number of walks with great views but the most beautiful one starts from a castle called castello di leonina and ends in a panoramic point of view called sito transitorio from which you can observe a stunning sunset.
Between 2,5 and 4,5 years ago there was the sea here!
The sito transitorio is a stone sculpture from the french artist jean paul philippe including a stone throne sitting on which you can enjoy the sunset.
The landscapes here are very vast and consist of beautiful green hills and valleys and small lakes and here we are at the panoramic point of view, the sito transitorio. Let's watch the sunset together!
the etruscans used to live here in (800 BC).

Weitere Reiseinfos:

Crete Senesi - Tuscany - Italy
The Crete Senesi refers to an area of the Italian region of Tuscany to the south of Siena. It consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena.
Crete senesi are literally Siennese clays and the distinctive grey colouration of the soil gives the landscape an appearance often described as lunar. This characteristic clay, known as mattaione, represents the sediments of the Pliocene sea which covered the area between 2.5 and 4.5 million years ago. In the nearby is also the semi-arid area known as Accona Desert.
Perhaps the most notable edifice of this area is the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
The region is known for its production of white truffles and hosts a festival and a museum dedicated to the rare tuber.
