Crossgates Mall - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Crossgates Mall in Westmere, NY from May 1, 2019. This is a big thriving mall just outside Albany, NY. Being a Pyramid property, there is plenty of architectural goodies to look at, such as the mall length skylights and tent-roof food court. Anchor courts are always very nice in these Pyramid malls with the placement of escalators tastefully framing the stores. Aside from these sorts of sights, the Crossgates mMll is a rather typical successful mall. It wasn't super exciting nor super boring either. It felt pretty good walking around this mall.
Songs used in this video (in order):
Voyage - Melody Melody
Casino Versus Japan - Aquarium
Steve Gray - Eye Catcher
B. Kaufman & G. Jérôme - Cynthia
Second Direction - Freeland
Doug Wood - Night Fever
Steve Gray - Wonder Groove
Steve Gray - Reach Out
In lieu of any sort of useful Wikipedia page, here is a 2007 article from the great labelscar blog (slightly edited for updated info).
Awhile back in our roundup of Albany Malls I never got around to discussing the main event, the Crossgates Mall in Guilderland. Part of this is because despite its size, Crossgates is relatively typical of a Pyramid Cos.-developed mall of its vintage. (For an example, look no further than the Silver City Galleria in Taunton, Massachusetts, another Pyramid-developed mall that opened in 1992 and shares almost the exact same interior decor theme as Crossgates). Really, this is just a long-winded way for me to say that it’s kind of boring. And it’s cramped, too, but it is big, and it is the beast that’s responsible for the decline of most other malls within an hour radius of Guilderland.
Crossgates Mall opened in 1984 as a significantly smaller mall than it is today, anchored by Caldor, Jordan Marsh, Filene’s, and JCPenney. The original section of the mall stretches from the JCPenney (which is the only anchor still located in its original location) to the present day Best Buy/Lucky Strike Social anchor. Crossgates was then substantially expanded in size in October 1994 to approximately 1.7 million square feet, with room for 250 stores and restaurants–effectively doubling the size of the mall. During this expansion, Lord & Taylor, Regal Cinemas, and a new Filene’s store opened as anchors, and the old Filene’s space was partially filled by Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Obviously, there were many changes in this roster over the years, with Macy’s replacing Jordan Marsh in 1996 when the entire Jordan Marsh name was retired, and similarly Macy’s replacing Filene’s in 2006 when the same occurred again. Today, the former Jordan Marsh (and original Macy’s) space is being used for Lord & Taylor while Macy’s occupies the last home of Filene’s in the mall. Similarly, Caldor went out of business in 1999, and their space was carved between Best Buy on the second level and H&M on the first. Interestingly, this anchor has a third level located above it, and this space was until 2005 home of a second movie theatre within the mall, and which shut due to declining popularity. Today, this area is home to a Get Air trampoline park and a Billy Beez.
Lord & Taylor closed their store here (along with so many others) in 2005. In 2014, they returned to the mall, just to announce five years later, in 2019, that this location was yet again closing. There were also other chains that came and went during the mall’s existence, ranging from ones that are long gone (Nobody Beats the Wiz, Klein’s All Sports) to ones that just shuffled around or closed these particular locations (DSW Shoe Warehouse, TJMaxx).
Cohoes Fashions also relocated their store from its historic location in downtown Cohoes, NY to the mall in 1999, but in 2007 their parent company, Burlington Coat Factory, closed many of the Cohoes locations and renamed most of the rest Burlington Coat Factory, including this one. The second floor was turned into a Forever 21.

14 BIGGEST Cats in the World

African Lion -- The lion’s face and mane is among the most widely recognized animal symbols in the world. Did you know the king of the jungle is content to have his queen do most of the work? Lionesses actually do most of the hunting for the pride. But while females are better at hunting, the male is better at defending his pride, so to speak. Males can weigh more than 550 pounds … placing them second only to tigers as the largest living cat. They can measure over 8 feet long, not including the tail. Did you know the color of a lion’s mane is said to be an indicator of its well-being? If a lion’s mane is dark and full, he’s thought to be healthy!
Bengal Tiger -- They’re generally considered the second-largest big cat next to the Siberian Tiger … but they have the longest canines of any extant large cat, measuring up to 10 centimeters long (about 4 inches). Including the tail, male Bengal tigers average over 3 meters (or 10 feet) long, and can weigh over 325 kilograms (over 700 pounds). Their habitat can vary, from grasslands to tropical rainforests … and are found from areas of India to Burma. While they have a reputation as a man-eater, the tigers would only attack a human if injured or weak … or if its normal prey was scarce. Their population has been estimated at less than 2500 individuals, making them the most numerous tiger subspecies in the wild … but their numbers show a downward trend. Poachers hunt the tigers for their skins and body parts, which are used in traditional medicines.
Earlier, we showed you Samson the 28 pound housecat from New York City. Now take a look at this critter … Like Samson, this cat belongs to the Maine Coon breed. And this is definitely one of the biggest domestic cats we’ve ever seen! We couldn’t find much information about the animal, or its owner … although from this picture it’s difficult to tell which is which! The cat’s unusual size makes us wonder if there isn’t some forced perspective going on here. What do you think?
The Siberian Tiger is also known as the Amur (ah-MOOR) Tiger. Did you know the tiger’s stripes don’t only appear on the fur? The same stripe patterns appear directly on their skin as well! They mostly roam about the forests of eastern Russia, with some located in North Korea and China. Male tigers can weigh over 700 pounds and measure around 11 feet long with the tail reaching 3 feet. There have been cases of Siberian tigers in the wild reaching nearly 850 pounds … but those accounts are unconfirmed. Depending on the source, their population is estimated at between 400 to 540 individuals living in the wild. While they’re still big cats, researchers have noted have that animals born after 1970 in the wild don’t weigh as much as their predecessors. Possible causes for that reduction in size might include illegal hunting that has killed off the tiger’s prey …Experts also say it's possible the specimens captured may have already been sick or injured.
James Ellerker - Pic
Hercules -- Now there’s a name that could be difficult to live up to … unless you’re this animal. He’s the hybrid offspring of a Bengal tigress and an African male lion … and is known as a Liger (lie-grr). These hybrids don’t exist in the wild, and can grow to twice as big as their parents. Hercules weighs in at 922 pounds … making him the world’s largest living non-obese cat, according to Guinness. You can see him featured in photos from James Ellerker … and although the animal appears enormous as he’s being fed, or is lying in the grass with his trainers, that’s the actual size of the beast -- no Photoshopping needed. He measures around 49 inches tall at the shoulder, and goes some 131 inches long. Hercules has become a celebrity, appearing on numerous TV shows … and traveling to promote wildlife conservation. This biggest of the big cats lives in South Carolina at the Myrtle Beach Safari Wildlife Preserve.
Honorable Mention - Jaipur
To be fair, we also found evidence of a Siberian tiger named Jaipur who is owned by an animal trainer in New Jersey. This critter is said to have a body weight between 935 to over 1,000 pounds, making him the largest captive tiger. In a side by side comparison with James Ellerker’s picture of Hercules, you can see Jaipur would seem to win the size battle. But we have no definite confirmation on Jaipur’s dimensions … so we’ll give him an honorable mention here!

Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

Here's a video on how to do a three point turn, which is basically a U turn, but with an extra maneuver (or even more, depending on the width of the street). In this case I show only the three points, but if you have a longer car or if the street is narrower, you might have to repeat the steps of turning the wheel completely to the left, moving forward as much as you can, turning it to the right completely, backing up as much as you can and so on.
Note: While I try to make my videos as universal as possible, rules and laws may vary according to the place where you’re driving and might be different from the ones in this video. Always drive according to the laws and rules that apply to the place where you are driving. Requirements at the driving exam may also be different than the ones shown here. Always respect the requirements that apply to the place where you are passing your driving exam. This video is not meant to replace your official driving courses.
String Quartet No 1, mvt 1 (Allegro con Brio), by Dante Zubel
This is the first live performance of one of Dante's own compositions by anyone other than himself. This was recorded during Session II of the 2013 New York Summer Music Festival in Oneonta, NY.
Each composition workshop student had the opportunity to have the professional staff perform one of their works at a special concert near the end of the session. Dante's introduction to his composition went something like this: Well, there's not much to really say about this piece. I wrote it in third grade while waiting for recess, so...yeah...I was bored in class. I hope you like it. (He is currently 12 years old.)
Profound thanks and gratitude to everyone at the NYSMF, but especially the four performers: Amy Iwazumi & Saeka Matsuyama on violins, Miranda Sielaff on viola, and Miho Zaitsu on violoncello.
Thanks also to Dr. Manuel Sosa, the composition instructor during Session II. (The piece performed is entirely Dante's original work, however.)
BRAVO!
PS The comment amidst the applause at the very end was made by the mother of one of the other composition students. Her daughter, Karen, wrote a very nice piece for piano and violin.
PPS As of MAR 2014, this piece took FIRST PLACE in the state of Utah (for the 13-15 year old age category)! It thus advances to the WESTERN REGION, comprised of 8 states. The top three will advance to Nationals. There are only 5 Regions in the country, so if it does well there, Dante will be one of only 15 finalists nationwide.
PPPS As of APR 2014, this piece has advanced to the NATIONAL FINALS! It competes among only 15 works in the 13-15 year old age category, nationwide. Stay tuned for the final results!
PPPPS As of May 12, 2014, we learned that this piece was one of the NATIONAL WINNERS! They issued first and second places, and three more unranked places to round out the top five. This piece was one of those three, and thus in the TOP FIVE IN THE NATION! Good job DANTE!

Correction at 7:48: The protester says “They are not doing this for themselves, but for the future of Hong Kong.”
Hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers have taken to the streets to protest a controversial extradition bill that could send Hong Kong residents to mainland China to be tried in court. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, says the bill is meant to prevent Hong Kong from becoming a safe haven for fugitives. But its opponents fear that Hong Kong would be exposed to China’s flawed judicial system, which would lead to further erasure of the city’s judicial independence.
At first Lam was determined to move forward with the bill. But after a series of massive protests, she announced she would “indefinitely suspend” the bill. But protesters aren't accepting the suspension, and have started demanding its complete withdrawal. They've also begun calling for Lam’s resignation.
But this rise in tensions is about a lot more than a bill. To understand why this bill hits a nerve with Hongkongers, it's important to understand Hong Kong’s relationship with China - and exactly how the bill would tip the scales in China’s favor.
