Anchorage Alaska- Big Life Big Alaska-www.anchorage.net/tg
Anchorage Hub of Alaska: Surrounded by some of the most spectacular wilderness in the United States, Anchorage is a first-class destination, with all the amenities you've come to expect in any traditional meeting place.
Anchorage sits at the base of the Chugach Mountains along the coast of Cook Inlet and lies as far west as the Hawaiian Islands and as far north as Helsinki yet it boasts a mild climate. Four mountain ranges, (the Chugach, Alaska, Kenai and Talkeetna) and the warm Japanese Chugach current combine to create pleasant year-round temperatures. Spring through fall, Anchorage's climate is similar to San Francisco's spring weather; winter comparisons usually remind visitors of ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains, Canada or Europe.
The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport serves as the primary port of entry into Alaska's largest city. With more than 300 flights either originating or terminating here each day, reaching Anchorage via air is both comfortable, convenient and time-efficient.
Visitors venturing to Anchorage can also drive from anywhere on the continent, any time of the year. The Alaska Highway, which links Alaska with Canada and the contiguous United States, is fully paved and offers services all year long. Another option is to take the Alaska Marine Highway to a nearby port such as Whittier, then take the highway or railway to Anchorage from there. See the Alaska Marine Highway section of this guide for more information or go to AlaskaFerry.com.
The parks system within Anchorage showcases some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Virtually every aspect of Anchorage's unique past is represented in the historic, cultural or natural themes of these accessible parks.
There are more than 180 miles of groomed trails in Anchorage, many of which are lighted, as well as hundreds of backcountry treks. The grand Chugach State Park embraces the south side of the Anchorage Bowl and offers backcountry access literally minutes from downtown. Kincaid Park is a cross-country skier's delight and one of only two courses certified for international competition in the United States. Hundreds of trails cross through wooded areas abundant with wildlife and vistas of the Alaska Range and Mt. Denali.
Often, flying is the only way to reach backcountry areas that offer an unforgettable experience in the pristine wilderness of Alaska. Flying is so popular in Alaska that 1 in 36 residents have a pilot's license and towns without a stop sign probably have a landing strip. Even the capital city of Juneau can only be accessed by water or plane.
There are many companies offering charter services for just a few hours or longer backcountry trips. From Anchorage, take a flight seeing trip to Denali National Park and circle majestic Mt. McKinley while looking down on fantastic flora and fauna below. A fly-in fishing trip is a popular way to experience an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan thrill.

The Great State of Alaska was a Russian Colony known as Russian America from 1774 until the US finalized the purchase in 1867. After the Crimean (Krimeen) War in 1853, Russia was short on cash so they sold Russian America believing the land contained no useful resources. The Russian Emperor, Alexander II, chose to sell to the United States instead of Canada, in fear of the land being seized by Britain if war broke out.
William Henry Seward, secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson, campaigned for the 586,412 Square miles of Russian America, about twice the size of TEXAS. The American people believed the land was barren, and labeled the purchase Seward’s folly.
The sale finalized on October 18,1867 for $7.2 million, was less than 2 cents an acre.
Public opinion changed when Gold was discovered in the Klondike River in 1896 sparking the gold rush.
Alaska became the 49th state Jan 3, 1959, now recognized for its vast natural resources. More than one third of Alaskan jobs are tied to the gas and oil industry and over 50% of seafood come from Alaska.
Alaska is the largest state about one fifth the size of the lower states combined. The name
ALASKA is derived from the Aliut word Alyeska which means Great Land. Alaska has two official state holidays to commemorate its origins.
Seward’s Day observed the last monday in March celebrates March 30th 1867, the day the land treaty of the US was signed. Then Alaska Day, October 18, marks the formal land transfer from Russia to the United States in 1867. Stay with us at or call 907-746-2225 and see the beauty for yourself!

Anchorage Cruise Ship Shuttle Ride from Cruise Port to Downtown (4K)
Holland America (and Princess Cruises) offers a free shuttle bus service from the Port of Anchorage into the downtown area. It runs about every 30 minutes and drops guests off near G and 6th Ave. See what the ride was like. Our particular ride took over 30 minutes due to waiting for at a train crossing for an Alaskan rail to pass through. Otherwise the ride should not take more than 15 minutes. To return, we simply had to get back to the drop-off point. The last shuttle left at around 8 PM to return guests back to the pier.
This was from our 14 day Alaska cruise aboard the Holland America Amsterdam in June of 2017. Usually cruise ships do not like to dock in Anchorage due to the extreme tide differences, and hence the popularity of Seward & Whittier as docking areas for visiting Anchorage. So it was nice to have a cruise in our case that docked directly in the city of Anchorage.

20150721: Day 44, Anchorage to Whittier, The tunnel!
The 21st July 2015, a Tuesday, was our 44th day on the road. This video is simply a travelogue depicting selected segments of the 1.5 hour trip from Anchorage to Whittier, AK where we were to meet a Phillips Cruises Tour aboard the M/V Klondike Express, the fastest catamaran in Alaska (said to be capable of speeds in excess of 45 mph) for the 12:30 PM 26 Glacier tour of Prince William Sound.
We travelled the Seward Highway (Alaska I-1) from Anchorage to the Portage Glacier Highway where we experienced a unique trip through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, otherwise known as the Whittier Tunnel on our way to Whittier. At 2.5 miles in length through Maynard Mountain, this tunnel is the 2nd longest highway tunnel and longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America which shares both train and automotive traffic through a single bore. Ingenious! We've recorded and included the entire trip through the tunnel! Those with claustrophobia may not want to watch this segment!
We documented our travel along these two highways which comprise some of the most beautiful scenery in America with a Cobra Dash Cam recording every inch of our journey. This resulted in over 2 hours of video total, including that of Whittier as we toured the community looking for a place to park...as well as a stop at the Alaskan Maritime Highway office to pick up our ferry boat tickets for our 3rd of August 2015 ride to Bellingham, WA.The challenge was to shorten the length of this video to something time wise under 1 hour. We managed to do so while trying to keep some of the best video along the way intact.
This video was taken beginning at 6:30 AM, which in part contributed to poor lighting along the way...resulting in sometimes not the best of video quality.
The trip begins 6:30 AM on 21 July 2015, a Tuesday, at the JBER RV Park located near Anchorage, then continues into Anchorage where we admitted our two dogs to the Hound Lounge Kennels for the day while we travelled on to Whittier for the tour. We followed the Seward Highway to the Portage Glacier Highway located near the former village of Portage, destroyed by the 1964 earthquake. The trip continued to and through the Whittier Tunnel, an adventure in its own right...and on to Whittier.
This segment actually was originally part of an over two-hour video, which included the glacier tour as well. We decided that just getting to Whittier was worth its own dedicated segment...which is what this video is all about. If you bore easily, and don't enjoy windshield tourism...then you may want to pass on this video. On the other hand, we hope you will watch it, and enjoy the scenery as we did!

Leaving Anchorage, I headed to the southern end of the trip, the southern coast of Alaska, to the port city of Suard. I stopped at Matanuska Glacier on the way to Suard. The Matanuska glacier can be explored on foot. Helmets and ezens must be worn to explore glaciers. He set foot in the glacier for the first time in Alaska. The glacier exploration guide walks unceasingly. By the way, when I first stepped on a glacier that was rugged and scored, it was not easy to walk on it. When I looked at it from a distance, I could not figure out the size of it. Glaciers stretching along the valley are about 43 km long, so you can not walk all day long. In the summer, the glacier water flows into the crevasse like a stream. Ice water is pure water without any impurities, so you can just drink it. However, this glacier is also rapidly declining. It is because it is getting less and less snow. As the temperature gets warmer, there is not a lot of snow, so we can not push the glacier. As you can see here, the glacier is melting. The top of the glacier every day melts by 2.5cm. In a year, 9 meters are melted. Glaciers have been around for hundreds of thousands of millions of years. But we have bitter thoughts that we have been removing glaciers in just a few decades.
