If you are going to South Africa there is no question about it. You NEED to go on a safari trip. Even if you are staying in Cape Town there are plenty of good options for some epic wildlife action.
We took the car four hour east along the beautiful Garden Route, where we stayed at the luxurious Garden Route Lodge.
But it wasn't just because of the luxurious accommodation, we picked this lodge.
Garden Route Lodge is known for its vast reserve that houses almost all of the iconic African animals.
And we certainly didn't miss out. We had two safari trips. One in the afternoon and one early morning next day.
It was INCREDIBLE, and a bucket list experience we will never forget. The adrenaline of seeing a giant elephant walking past you just three metres away has to be experienced for yourself in order to understand how epic it really is.
Of course there are many amazing game reserves in South Africa, but it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Garden Route Lodge offers the best safari in South Africa, unless you of course go on the seven day long safari trips in Kruger National Park.

When I was planning my trip to South Africa and the safari component to our honeymoon, one thing that I've said before is that it was actually pretty challenging because there just isn't a lot of information out there about what it's actually like to be on a safari in Kruger National Park. Sure there were blog posts about it but when it came to YouTube videos providing a walkthrough of the park, camp life, and self-drive, there just wasn't much out there. Sure this video may not cover every single aspect of Kruger but for someone that stayed there for 3 nights and 4 days, it gives you a look into what our experience was like and the two of the larger camps we experienced - Skukuza and Lower Sabie.

My 17-day land tour of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia.
The tour starts off in Johannesburg. From there I visit the capital in Pretoria. Next up is Soweto and the homes of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
After a flight to Botswana I spend two days on animal safaris in Chobe National Park.
Next it's a short drive to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe where I visit the world famous Victoria Falls, ride an elephant through the bush, take a sunset cruise down the mighty Zambezi River, take to the skies on a scenic helicopter flight, visit a primitive village and local school.
I fly to northern South Africa next where I spend three days on animal safari in Kruger National Park.
Next I fly to Cape Town for the final six nights of my trip. I spend the first two nights on a wine estate from where I explore the towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. I spend the last four nights of the trip in downtown Cape Town. From here I ride the cable car to the top of Table Mountain, visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprissoned, take a scenic drive to the Cape of Good Hope where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, enjoy the lively V&A Waterfront and visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
