NM True TV - Indian Hollow, Aguirre Springs and Dripping Springs Hikes
There is a common saying that it is about the journey, not the destination. But after some hiking in the Organ Mountains outside of Las Cruces Michael and the NM True Crew might argue it is both. The climbs to higher ground included an abundance of both beauty and interesting information from their guide. And the views from the top…stunning.

Camping Aguirre Springs!
Beautiful camp site in the Southern Rockies.
Aguirre Spring Campground -Desert Peaks National Monument. The road to the campground!
There are several reviews of what length trailer / RV size will be able to navigate the drive up the road to Aguirre Spring Campgrounds. The Campground 'recommends' trailers no longer than 23' . We had read reviews that indicated folks with 30' trailers made it up just fine. Our trailer is 31'. after reading the reviews and talking to the Camp Host, we thought we would give it a try. This is video footage of trip up the final 2 miles of the road. The reward was an awesome campground with great views and 2 (at least) wonderful hiking trails. I suggest, if folks take their time trailers a few feet longer would be able to make it. The limiting factor is really the size of the campsites. There are very few campsites that will long units will fit into.

An afternoon at Aguirre Springs
The Organ Mountains are a compact range a few miles east of Las Cruces, forming a southerly extension of the much larger San Andres Mountains - both create a natural divide between Rio Grande Valley in the west and Tularosa Valley in the east, much of which is contained within White Sands Missile Base. The most spectacular section of the Organ Mountains are the Needles, a jagged ridge of eroded granite pinnacles, and this provides a scenic backdrop to the BLM-managed Aguirre Spring Recreation Area, situated in a sheltered bowl on the northeast-facing side of the ridge. The site contains a campground, at elevation 5,700 feet and hence significantly cooler than the desert lowlands, plus two trails, and the proximity to both Las Cruces and El Paso makes the place very popular.

Organ Needle overnight hike 2019
Video documentary of our group overnight hike to the Needle Peak in the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces, NM on April 27-28, 2019. At 9,012 ft., the Needle is not the highest peak in New Mexico by a long shot (13,159 ft. Wheeler Peak is), but the Needle is rated by the Bureau of Land Management as the most strenuous hike in New Mexico.
The purpose of this video is to try to show how difficult (rugged and steep) this hike is, as well as how spectacular the view is from the top. Our starting point was the La Cueva picnic area (elevation 4,870 ft.) in the Dripping Springs Recreation Area, on the west side of the Organ Mountains. This hike can be done as a day hike, but it requires starting early and hiking quickly in order to be up and down during daylight hours. Doing it as an overnight hike allows for a more moderate pace.
The route to the Needle is not a maintained trail. There is a fairly well defined trail as far as Juniper Saddle, but beyond that point the route is defined by rock cairns and a few stretches of visible trail. Even then, conditions near the top are so rugged and hazardous that the BLM highly recommends not attempting this hike if you have not done it before and are not accompanied by someone who has done it before. Special equipment is not needed, but there is some low grade rock climbing involved near the top.
Due to a combination of equipment problems and my having to help the first timers on this hike navigate a couple of the more difficult spots, there are a few places where I did not get good video footage and had to use photos to fill in the gaps. It is nevertheless an improvement over my first attempt at a video documentary of this hike in 2016.
