Agumbe is a small village located in Shimoga district, Thirthahalli taluk in the Malnad region of Karnataka, India. It is sometimes called The Cherrapunji of the South after Cherrapunji, in Northeast India.

The Agumbe hair pin curves see heavy traffic on weekends and is relatively free on weekdays. My drive was through Udupi Agumbe Highway. Agumbe tourism offers a beautiful drive through the Agumbe Forest area. Agumbe Tourism is all for nature lovers. Karnataka Tourism is well developed and made people aware of natures beauty across Dakshina Kannada. Amazing curvey roads of Agumbe tempt all rides to experience the drive. Ride to agumbe to view the sunset from the sunset view point has always been one of my favorite. Agumbe sunset view point is generally crowded in the evening.

The nearest airport to Agumbe is at Mangalore which lies at a distance of approximately 94 km. The elevation of Agumbe is 643m. As part of the Western Ghats mountain range, Agumbe lies in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other sites of interest near Agumbe is the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kudremukh National Park. agumbeya prema sanjeya is the famous song by Dr. Rajkumar is dedicated to this place. The evening of agumbe beauty has been captured many a hearts. RK Narayan's 'Malgudi days' was shot in Agumbe. Telugu movie Teja was aslo shot in Agumbe. Agumbe sunset view point gives a majestic view of the sunset above the western ghats and the winding roads below. Agumbe also has many hidden waterfalls all through the year. Agumbe ghat has Dangerous Hairpin Bend Road. Agumbe tourism is famous for its view and nature. A trip to Agumbe is refreshing and challenging.

Agumbe is a village located in Shimoga district, Thirthahalli taluk, Malnad region, the state of Karnataka, India. Agumbe is amongst the highest rainfall receiving region in the Western Ghats, also earning itself the name, Cherrapunji of the South. The only Rain Forest research centre in India, Agumbe Rainforest Research Station is located here. Established by the herpetologist, Romulus Whitaker to whom Agumbe was the capital of King Cobra. Agumbe forests (as well as nearby Someswara Wild Life Sanctuary) are included in World Heritage sites as a part of Western Ghats. Agumbe receives the second highest annual rainfall in India, next only to Cherrapunji (or the nearby Mawsynram). It receives a mean annual rainfall of 7,640 millimetres (301 in). The absolute maximum rainfall recorded in Agumbe in a single month is 4,508 millimetres (177.5 in) (in August 1946).Sunset in Agumbe is beautiful. There is a sunset point, located on the 14th hair pin bend on the serpantine road to Agumbe (from Udupi) which receives a lot of visitors. On a clear day, one can see the sun setting over the Arabian Sea though the sea is quite a long distance from Agumbe.Agumbe is near the town of Thirthahalli on the National Highway NH-13. From the state capital of Bangalore, Agumbe can be reached by taking NH-4 till Tumkur, then NH-206 till Shimoga and then NH-13 to Thirthahalli (a total distance of about 380 km.). Udupi on the Konkan Railway is the nearest railhead. The nearest airport is the Mangalore International Airport.
It can also be reached from Bangalore, via Hassan ~ Chikkamagalore ~ Balehonnur ~ Jaipura ~ Sringeri ~ Agumbe. This is the shortest route from bangalore.
Another choice of route is from Bangalore via Hassan ~ Belur ~ Chikkamagaloor ~ Sringeri ~ Agumbe.
Being a part of Malnad and Western Ghats, Agumbe and its surroundings are rich in biodiversity. It is adjacent to one of the last surviving lowland rain forests in the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kudremukh National Park. Many new species of flora and fauna are found in this region. Agumbe lends its name to the following species which were discovered here.

Agumbe is the location of the only permanent rainforest research station in India which was established by the herpetologist, Romulus Whitaker. Whitaker chose Agumbe as the location for this station since this was the area where he spotted the King Cobra in the early 1970s. Financial help to build this station was provided by Whitaker's mother, Doris Norden who willed him money that helped him purchase 8 acres (32,000 m2) of land in Agumbe. The main goal of the research station is to study and conserve the rainforests of South India, using King Cobra as the flagship species. One of the main goals of this research is to help the state of Karnataka establish the world's first King Cobra Sanctuary. Experts from various fields were invited to aid in the research and understanding of the basic biology of the King Cobra which is an endangered species. For his efforts in setting up this station, Whitaker was awarded the United Kingdom's top conservation prize — the Whitley Award in 2005. Whitaker used the £30,000 cash prize that came with the award to set up cottages, buy basic scientific equipment, and a vehicle. The research station is eco-friendly and is not connected to the state's electricity grid and uses solar power and a micro hydel unit. Even the fencing around the station is of smooth wire so that it does not hurt the deer and leopards passing by. The station consists of two cottages for researchers and a refurbished farmhouse that serves as the hub. The station follows three-pronged approach involving research, education and conservation. Regular visits to schools are made and lectures including demonstrations on snakes and conservation are given to students.
Malgudi Days-Malgudi Days is a famous television serial which was directed by Shankar Nag and is based on the novels written by R. K. Narayan. Many episodes of this serial were filmed in Agumbe in 1985. In 2004, a new set of episodes of Malgudi Days have also been filmed at Agumbe under the direction of Kavitha Lankesh.

How to reach - It is located near to Agumbe juction.
Onake Abbi Falls
Onake Abbi Falls at 400 feet hight. Trekking for 4 km through rainforest is needed in order to reach a top view of the falls.
How to reach - From Agumbe juction towards Uduppi road 1km, park your vehicle there. You can see a arch shape entrance on the right side. Start 4km trekking through the rain forest.
Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS)
The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) is a field based conservation and research organisation situated inside the Agumbe Reserved Forest at Agumbe.
How to reach - It is located around 1.5km toward Shimoga road and take left to mud road only few meter from there.
Jogi Gundi falls
Jogigundi is a small water fall near Agumbe.This is about 800m deep. It is usually filled with water just like a pool. Take care of childrens.
How to reach - It is located 500meter towards Sringeri road and take right turrn of 1.5km. Park your vehicle and start waking 300mtr.
Barkana falls
Barkana falls is 850ft/259 mts in height. It is the tenth highest falls in india. The view point of the Barkana falls is about 4 km from the end of the approching vehicle track.
How to reach - It is located 8km from Agumbe juction. The same road to Jogi gundi falls. The road is ending in a village, park your vechile and take right turn to mud road, cross a small stream and start trekking of 4km through rain forest. You can see only a long view of Barkana falls.
Kundadri hills
Kundadri is a hill (826 mts) with dense forests in the western ghats located around 13km from Agumbe. This hill is known for 17th century Jain temple dedicated to Thirthankara and the place is known to have given shelter to one Acharya kundakuna during earlier centuries.The main deity of this temple is Parshwanatha, 23rd tirthankar. Two small ponds formed by the rock on one side of this temple provided water to earlier sages.
How to reach - If you are coming from Agumbe, go towars Shimog road and take left turn after 8km, the juction called Guddekeri from there 5km. Hairpin bends are there before reaching the top. You will get beautiful view from the top of the hill.
Sirimane falls
Sirimane falls is a beautiful water falls near Sringeri. It is located around 38km from Kundadri hill.
How to reach – If you are coming from Kundadri hill, climb down and take left to Sringeri- Agumbe road after 8.5km you will reach a juction, take left towards Sringeri road, after 4.8km take right to sirimane falls. This is not stright road to Sirimane falls. You can take bath from the bottom of the falls.
Sringeri
Sringeri, also written as Shringeri is a hill town in Chikkamagaluru district. It is located on the banks on the banks of the river Tunga and also a historical Temple (1200) years). Aruond 16km from Sirimane falls and 36km from Agumbe. In the temple season time like pooja, etc , you will never get any rooms over there.
Kudremukha National park
It is located in Chikkamagaluru district, 56 km from Sringeri.
How to reach - From Sringeri town go to Agumbe road, just 500mts take left to Karkala road. After 32 km you will reach a juction called S K boarder bus stop, take left. Now you will enter in to the National park. Right road is going to Karkala. Some restriction are apply. Don’t stop vehicle. don’t get down etc. We do not have entry to any of the waterfalls. If you reach the forest office in the moring ( after 22km from the Juction) you may get trekking permission.
Agumbe Sunset point
Agumbe is located at a distance of 380 km from Bangalore in Shimoga district of Karnataka state. It is situated at an elevation of 826 meters.
Agumbe is one of the most scenic places on the Western Ghats in Karnataka. It is lying in the Thirthahalli taluk and the Malnad region and surrounded by dense lush green forests, small streams and ghats.
Agumbe is famous for spectacular sunset and many visitors come here to watch it. The sunset here gets reflected from the Arabian Sea onto the horizon. The best season for viewing sunset of Agumbe is from November to January.
Agumbe is also known Cherrapunji of South India because this place receives highest rainfall in Karnataka state.
Agumbe is also popular for exciting trekking routes. There are three waterfalls near to Agumbe the Onake Abbi falls, Barkana falls and the Jogigundi falls.
