The U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, but it was a year later when American Army soldiers and Marines saw their first major combat on the Western Front. This Memorial Day on American History TV, we'll look back 100 years to key battles in northeastern France near the town of Chateau-Thierry and at Belleau Wood. More than 10,000 Americans died, were wounded, or went missing in this area.
Aisne Marne American Cemetery
Lying south of the village of Belleau, France, this 42.5- acre cemetery contains the graves of 2,289 Americans, most of whom fought in the vicinity and in the Marne valley in the summer of 1918. On the interior walls of the memorial chapel are the names of 1,060 who were missing in the region.

This is a summary of the US Marine Corps ceremony at Belleau Wood, commemorating the Marines who died there helping the French defend Paris against the Germans during World War I.
Among those fallen is a relative of ours, Private Daniel Dopp (81st Company, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, US Marine Corps), who died from incoming shellfire on June 9th, 1918.

Ton Derks Advancing, productiebureau voor theater, concerten en evenementen schakelde dit voorjaar Houben Souren Verhuur in voor een uitermate eervol av-project; het project omvatte de gehele cameraregie bij de 100-jarige oorlogsherdenkingsceremonie in Belleau, Frankrijk plus de plaatsing en aansturing van een XL-Videoscreen van 10x5 meter, ter plaatse.
Even een stukje geschiedenis: “In 1918 vond bij Belleau Frankrijk de slag om Belleau Bos plaats. Het was de eerste georganiseerde tegenaanval van de American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) divisie American Marine Corps, tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog onder het opperbevel van generaal John Pershin. De Slag om Belleau Bos houdt het trieste record van ‘meeste Amerikaanse soldaten gedood in één gevecht in de Eerste Wereldoorlog’.
Tijdens Memorial Day, op 27 mei vond het event plaats, op de Aisne Marne American Cemetry and Memorial te Belleau, te Frankrijk. De initiatiefnemer van deze herdenking was de American Battle Monuments Commission. Voor Houben Souren Verhuur lag er een eervolle taak om tijdens de ceremonie indrukwekkende historische beelden en films, outdoor perfect weer te geven op het grote scherm aan het publiek. Onze focus bij de cameraregie lag op ‘beleving’, perfecte timing, harmonische wisseling van shots, balans tussen informatie en emotie, haarscherp beeld en het vasthouden van de aandacht van de kijkers. Natuurlijk werkten we met de beste outdoor apparatuur voor de klus. Voor onze uitvoering ontvingen we veel lof van de ABMC en TeleFrance3.
Houben Souren Verhuur toonde zich zowel in het voortraject als tijdens de uitvoering een betrouwbare partner voor Ton Derks Advancing. We leverden gedurende het gehele event perfecte beelden welke tevens werden gebruikt voor live TV-uitzending door TeleFrance3, Associated Press, CNN, Fox News en Marine Corps TV.

The Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial is a 42-acre World War I cemetery in Belleau, Northern France.It is at the foot of the hill where the Battle of Belleau Wood was fought, with many American fatalities.The cemetery also contains burials from the Battle of Château-Thierry, later that summer.The site is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, and its dedication ceremony was held on Memorial Day, May 30, 1937.

Oise Aisne American Cemetery
Lying 1.5 miles east of Fere en Tardenois (Aisne), France, and 14 miles northeast of Chateau-Thierry, this 36.5-acre cemetery contains 6,012 American graves, most of whom died in the area in 1918. The chapel walls contain the names of 241 missing.

John Kelly lays wreath for WWI fallen at Aisne-Marne cemetery
(10 Nov 2018) White House Chief of Staff John Kelly John Kelly laid a wreath in honour of those who died in World War I at Aisne-Marne cemetery in France on Saturday.
Kelly and and General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff visited the cemetery near the village of Belleau, France.
Kelly and Dunford also observed a moment of silence at the cemetery, which is 50 miles east of the French capital.
It's the site of a 1918 battle in which the American and French repelled German forces.
More than 1,800 Americans died there.
The battle looms large in the history of the U.S. Marines Corps.
President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit the World War I cemetery but the White House called his visit off due to poor weather.
