History:
Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera). The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption about 1627 BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. The site has been excavated since 1967.

Prehistoric Town of Akrotiri , Greece
Version en français plus bas.
Unlike Pompei, no human remains have been found at Akrotiri, and only one gold object was found on the site, suggesting that the Minoans performed an orderly evacuation before the eruption, and they had time to take their valuables before they fled.
The Minoan civilization existed on Crete and its surrounding Greek islands, and flourished from approximately 3600 BC to 1400 BC. The eruption of Thera has been credited with its demise; geologists have called it the most destructive natural event in recorded history. The town of Akrotiri was an outpost of Crete which dates back to the third millennium BC and gradually developed into one of the main ports and urban centers of the Aegean.

Akrotiri Dig - Santorini, Greece
I have been long festinated by the Akrotiri dig. It is one of the clues that make the island of Santorini, Greece the likely source of the Atlantis myth. This was my second visit to the dig. It was featured in the Daryl Hanna's first movie, Summer Lovers.
This active excavation is on the sound end of Santorini and well worth the visit.

The Prehistoric City of Akrotiri
Belinda takes you on a quick tour of the Ancient Ruins site of Akrotiri in Santorini
Santorini (Akrotiri Ancient Ruins)
The earliest evidence for human habitation of Akrotiri can be traced back as early as the fifth millennium BC, when it was a small fishing and farming village. By the end of the third millennium, this community developed and expanded significantly. One factor for Akrotiri’s growth may be the trade relations it established with other cultures in the Aegean, as evidenced in fragments of foreign pottery at the site. Akrotiri’s strategic position on the primary sailing route between Cyprus and Minoan Crete also made it an important point for the copper trade,[2] thus allowing them to become an important center for processing copper, as proven by the discovery of molds and crucibles there.
Akrotiri’s prosperity continued for about another 500 years; paved streets, an extensive drainage system, the production of high quality pottery, and further craft specialization all point to the level of sophistication achieved by the settlement. This all came to an end, however, in the 16th century BC with the volcanic eruption of Thera. There is a variety of dating evidence for the eruption, but its exact year is not known. Radiocarbon dating places it most probably between 1620 and 1530 BC, which is also in accord with the date range of 1570 to 1500 BC suggested by similarities of the material culture with other sites in the Aegean. Unusual growth patterns observed in tree rings in 1597, 1560, 1546 and 1544 BC are consistent with a major volcanic event in any those years. The latter three dates might be the best candidates as they are also considered possible for Egyptian New Kingdom records that are thought to refer to the eruption.

Santorini Akrotiri Archaeological Site
The prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini (Thíra) is one of the most important sites in the Aegean. Akrotiri is referred to as the 'Greek Pompeii' because the site was covered in volcanic ash. And, like its Italian namesake, a charred bed was also recovered by archaeologists.
This ancient city was covered in a heap of volcanic ash in the late 17th century B.C., preserving it for present-day archaeologists and interested tourists. The site is so well preserved that it is often referred to as the Pompeii of the Aegean

Akrotiri Ruins and Oia Village in Santorini, Greece - What to Do on Your Day in Port
We take a shore excursion in Santorini, Greece called Akrotiri Ruins and Oia Village. We purchased it onboard for about $100 US each. The tour was okay. There is little to see at the ruins and everywhere else was very crowded.
Inside Akrotiri
Take a look inside the Akrotiri Archaeological site in Santorini. The site is now open again after years of closures.
