SHOUF Biosphere Cedar Reserve: A Breathtaking Mountain to Experience in Chouf Barouk
The largest of #Lebanon #naturereserves, #AlShouf #CedarNatureReserve stretches from Dahr Al-Baidar in the north to Niha Mountain in the south. blanketed with oak forests on its northeastern slopes and juniper and oak forests on its southeastern slopes the reserves most famous attractions are its three magnificent cedar forests of Maasser Al-Shouf , Barouk and #AinZhalta – Bmohary . These #Cedarforests account for a quarter of the remaining cedar forest in Lebanon, and some trees are estimated to be 2,000 years old. The size of the reserve makes it a good location for the conservation of medium-size mammals such as the wolf and the Lebanese jungle cat, as well as various species of mountain and plants.
The Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is a popular destination for hiking and trekking, with trails matching all levels of fitness. Bird watching, mountain biking and snowshoeing are also popular. From the summit of the rugged mountains, visitors will have a panoramic view of the countryside, eastward to the Beqaa Valley and Qaraoun Lake, and westward toward the Mediterranean.

Al-Shouf Cedar Reserve - Maasser Cedar Forest, Lebanon
Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the Chouf District of Lebanon. It is located on the slopes of Barouk mountain and has an area of 550 km2, nearly 5.3% of the Lebanese territory. The reserve contains the Lebanon Cedar forests of Barouk, Maaser el Shouf and Ain Zhalta. It is an Important Bird Area (IBA) and Eco-tourism area. It hosts 32 species of wild mammals, 200 species of birds, and 500 species of plants. The cedar forests of Lebanon enjoy the unique distinction as the oldest documented forests in history. The cedars were important enough in the history of man to be traceable to the very earliest written records, that of the Sumerians in the third millennium BC. In the ancient Sumerian story, The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest pieces of literature in the world, the Cedars feature prominently. Gilgamesh has since been recognized as King Gilgamesh of history and in probability visited Mount Lebanon. Some cedars are estimated to be 2,000 years old.

The cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) is a tall evergreen tree which has been prized for its high quality timber, oils and resins for thousands of years. The national emblem of Lebanon. it was famously used to build the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, as well as the ships and temples of the Egyptian pharaohs. The resin of the cedar of Lebanon was even used in mummification by the Ancient Egyptians.

Lebanon Green Initiatives - Al Barouk Forests and Reforestation
In 2011 AUB-NCC launched the Biodiversity Village Award -- Baldati Biati. This project was conceived to promote decentralization of biodiversity conservation by engaging village communities in the process of planning for the conservation of their village's natural resources.
50 Villages participated in the Biodiversity Village Award-- Baldati Biati project since 2011. Each village formed a local committee that consisted of representatives from local authorities, schools, civil society and private institutions.
Following the formation of village committees, AUB-NCC used icons developed by the greenmap.org and a participatory mapping approach to help participating committees identify and place their natural resources and social landmarks on one map.
This documentary was produced to inspire other Lebanese villages by disseminating one environmental best practice identified in each village.

Al BAROUK VIllage: The Cedar Nature Reserve and its Surroundings
Barouk (Arabic: الباروك) is a village in the Chouf District of Lebanon. Historically, the village is known for being the land of good, because of its fountain (Nabeh-el-Barouk). The poet Rachid Nakhleh, the writer of the national hymn (kulluna lel watan), was born in Barouk. The village is also famous for its apples and other fruits, and for its many forests such as pine trees and oak trees which are well known in Lebanon. Barouk is crowned by its mountain Jabal el Barouk that stands 1943 m above sea level. The mountain also has the largest natural reserve in Lebanon, the Al Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve, and contains the oldest and most elegant cedar forest in Lebanon, the Cedrus libani . That cedar is considered, among with other cedar forests, the real Cedars of Lord Arz el Rab.
Roadtrip to Deir El Qamar, Beit ed Dine, Moukhtara and Shouf Reserve Cedar Forest in Lebanon
Shouf is a historic region of Lebanon, Located south-east of Beirut, the region comprises a narrow coastal strip notable for the Christian town of Damour, and the valleys and mountains of the western slopes of Jabal Barouk, and the largest forest of Cedars of Lebanon is found.
We started our adventure from Deir El Qamar (Monastery of the Moon) which is one of Lebanon’s prettiest villages. It also has an interesting history that reflects the country’s tolerant religious roots. We eat there in a restaurant called Basha Resort, it was nice and delicious, We paid $40 which is fair regarding the quality we had.
We moved after that to Moussa Castle, its a unique place from outside, we didn't actually enter because we thought its kind of typical wax museum. The entrance fees: $10
Beit ed Dine palace was closed because of Eid, so we only saw it from outside. The palace, former stronghold of the 18th-century governor Emir Bashir, can be seen from across the valley as you approach it, its done by Italian architects.
The plans changed and we went to Moukhtara, which is the seat of the Jumblatt family and the capital of the Shouf. The Jumblatts’ 19th-century stone palace dominates the town. Consisting of three large buildings, it has its own hammam, a garden with a collection of Roman sarcophagi and a waterfall that tumbles into an ornamental pool. Walid Jumblatt, the head of the family and leader of the Druze lives actualy inside this palace. The guards were so nice and they helped us a lot to learn more about the palace.
At the end of our Roadtrip, we went up to the Shouf Cedar Reserve, the largest reserve in Lebanon, a fascinating place to hike and visit, we were able to drive inside the reserve and be between very old Cedar trees. ($4.5 Entrance fees)
