Provence Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Provence.
Marseille is the oldest city in France, the country’s largest commercial harbour and the capital of Provence, an enchanting region full of contrast. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the fifth century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. Aix-En-Provence, along with its numerous lanes, is one of the most beautiful cities in France. More than forty spectacular fountains help to cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. ‘Sur Le Pont D’Avignon’ are the words of the world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge as that is the location of its bars! For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the city of Nîmes. It is the capital of the Departement Gard that is situated on the periphery of Provence. One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. The town was established in 1240. From the city wall that is eleven metres high and six metres thick, there is a wonderful view across the rooftops of the impregnable city. With historic towns in which both the Romans and the Papacy felt at home, and with blossoming fields of lavender and ancient mountain villages, Provence is a land of sweet aromas and radiant light.

Avignon, France part 1, walking tour in Old Town
We start at one of the most picturesque streets in town, Rue des Teinturiers, the street of the tinters.
Several ancient water wheels along this cobbled lane are still turning, pushed along by a quaint little, tree-lined canal.
The wheels were once used to provide power for the manufacturing and dyeing of textiles. Now this is a trendy street, with cafes, boutiques and a small theater, a mere ten-minute walk from the town center. We have a quick look at the Palace of the Popes then continue walking the small lanes of the Old Town of Avignon.

Arles, Provence in the south of France
We are taking you to the beautiful city of Arles, in Provence in the south of France. Arles is most famous for its Roman amphitheater, still intact, and its connections with Van Gogh, who spent one of his final years here painting 200 canvases. Its real appeal, however, is found in the lovely pedestrian promenades, the historic landmarks, museums and tranquil plazas, all of which make Arles one of the most charming places in Europe.

There's a lot of these narrow streets in Arles, there is a small pedestrian zone, there's the various squares and the cafés around it, of course, and historic sites. And we will be showing you those highlights coming up right now as we take a walk through Arles.
The old town of Arles is comfortably small. It's about a square mile. So it's very easy to see the whole thing on foot. You might consider spending a couple of days here.
Or you could visit as a daytrip for example from Avignon which is just 20 miles away and only takes 20 minutes by train to get here. In this program we will show you how you can do everything in one day but certainly if you want to spend more time you decide for yourself. To help you plan your visit we will also present more detailed suggestions about how you could spend a night or two here and still find lots to do.
This is part of a series we’re presenting showing how Avignon makes a very good home base for visiting out to other destinations like Pont du Gard, and St Remy and Nimes along with Aix and Marseille, and especially Arles, the wonderful city of van Gogh and the ancient Romans, with narrow pedestrian lanes weaving throughout the center
The main attractions are the arena, the pedestrian zone and a historic museum. We will show you a good walking route on the map. Of course you can walk anywhere you want, it’s small enough, but this route will take you right through the center and then back to the train station, a route just over 2 miles, or about 3 kilometers, you can do in several hours. But you should also see the history museum while you're here, with its fine collection from the ancient Roman days, an easy detour. So let's assume you're coming in from Avignon on a day trip and you want to see everything.

Avignon Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Avignon in France.
A famous song that features a bridge takes us into the French Provencal town of Avignon. 'Sur Le Pont D'Avignon': thus begins the world famous French song that is familiar with both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the Pont Saint Enezet Bridge. Internal disputes in addition to power struggles in Rome transformed Avignon into the new seat of the Pontificate. The impressive Popes' Palace dominates the centre of the town. Its exterior resembles a military fortress rather than a religious residence. A coat of arms above the main entrance is reminiscent of the papal court that was founded by Klemens The Sixth. In 1348 he bought Avignon for 80,000 gold ducats from Johanna The First, Queen of Sicily. During his term of office he added a new, more luxurious building to the Old Palace that was constructed between 1334 and 1342. The beauty of the palace manifests itself in the numerous terraces and towers that were used for defensive purposes during the 14th and 15th centuries. Seven successive French popes transformed Avignon into one of the most glamorous medieval courts in Europe. The town's expansion gradually became increasingly more splendid and the pontificate's dependence on French royalty became further entrenched.

Art History Tour in Provence with Artful Journeys
Who wouldn't want to spend cool and crisp autumn afternoons walking in the footsteps of some of France's most celebrated painters?
From November 5 to 14, 2018, Artful Journeys presented Art History in Provence, a guided travel tour focusing on the many illustrious artists who once made their home in the South of France, such as Cezanne, Renoir, Chagall, Picasso, and Van Gogh.
While exploring the creative journeys of these creative giants, travelers also experienced the culinary wealth of the Provence/ Côte d'Azur region with rich local cuisine and bright fruity wines. So because of our small group size, we were able to enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes without the limits of a larger group.
In addition to the three overnight cities of Nice, Aix-en-Provence, and Arles, the group visited sites in Antibes, Les Baux-de-Provence, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, and Avignon.
The museums and sites visited included Fine Arts Museum of Nice, Chagall Museum, Picasso Museum, Renoir Museum, Cézanne Studio, Saint-Paul Asylum, Mary Magdalene Basilica, Carrières de Lumières, among others.
With plenty of free time, our travelers were able to explore the various cities for themselves, enjoying the local culture, shopping and had time to relax.
The tour, led by Director Joan Hill, tour guide Sevan Melikyan, and Assistant Director Carla Bohnett...who also took most of the pictures seen in this video.
Joan Hill is the Owner of Artful Journeys, a tour company based in Cape Cod, MA.
Sevan Melikyan is an independent lecturer on art history, owner of Wired Gallery in High Falls, NY, and an artist.
Carla Bohnett is a professional photographer based in California.

The town of Avignon France (population near 93,000) was a sheer delight to walk around. I loved the stone wall surrounding the city. It a way it made me feel safe. I imagine it to be how people must have felt a sense of closeness many many years ago when the walls were erected. This place reminded me of Dresden in Germany. If you like this video I have many more from an 18 country tour I did recently. Thanks for watching and please subscribe and share! :)
