Mt. LeConte via Alum Cave Trail - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Good Evening fellow adventurers! Happy Birthday to Snake Stepper (Lisa) my beautiful wife and partner in the wilderness.
The Midlife Hiking Club spent her birthday day-hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Alum Cave Trail to Mt. LeConte. Which happens to be one of her favorite hikes in Tennessee!
Alum Cave Trail is going through some major improvements and construction. The progress looks very promising and the improvements have made some areas a lot more safe for travel, especially in the winter. I think the end result will be spectacular and allow this access trail to survive the mass crowds more effectively. Thank you NPS for your tireless work on this trail and saving our wilderness from the never ending human impact.
Sorry no Liberty the Dogness on this hike. She is not allowed in the National Park, under her protest. She wants so badly to adventure there, but rules are rules and as hard as it is to leave her behind, we still have to hike the Smoky's. It's our backyard :)

America's Rainforest - Great Smoky Mountains | Alum Cave Mt LeConte
Measured from it's immediate base, beginning in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Mt. LeConte rises more than 5,000 feet and is the highest summit in the eastern United States when measured this way. It is the 3rd highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park when measured in sea level height, 6,593'.
Rain forests can be found on almost every continent in the world, but most people don't realize that there is a rainforest in The Great Smoky Mountains. This is a hike up Alum Cave trail, to the Alum Cave Bluffs, toward the summit of Mt. LeConte, and into the temperate rainforest of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Hiking the Newly Reopened Bull Head Trail - Great Smoky Mountains
We decided to hike the newly reopened Bull Head Trail. This was our first time seeing this trail after the deadly wildfires of 2016.
This trail has changed ALOT since i last hiked this trail. The views are amazing but it's a sad reminder of the lives lost and the property that was damaged during these 2016 wildfires.
Let us a comment below let us know what you think about Bull Head Mountain and it's recovery.
This may be dated but here's how you can still help
SUBSCRIBE and learn about the Great Smoky Mountains or hiking and backpacking in general,
with an occasional cycling video or two.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Gatlinburg - Alum Cave Hike 092312 Canon T4i 1080p Video.mp4

Best watched at 1080p and full screen!
This was a first test of the 1080p video for my new Canon T4i DSLR. All shots were with a monopod using AF and AE. The lens was a Canon 18-200mm.
The Alum Cave Hike is one of our most favorites in the Smoky Mountains since it follows a beautiful mountain stream for the first mile of the trail. The first mile is a very easy hike. At about 1.3 miles you get to Arch Rock. Once you go through the cave, it gets progressively harder all the way up to Mount LeConte. But don't let that scare you. The first mile is great for all hikers including children.
