Charlies Bunion and The Jumpoff - Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC
***I added something new in this video, a Google Earth tour of my GPS track. Let me know if you like it or not by leaving a comment. I think it is a cool addition.***
My hike from June 3 beginning at the Kephart Prong Trailhead in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC. I needed to bag Mount Kephart for the South Beyond 6000 Challenge. Most people hike the mountain from Newfound Gap and add on Charlies Bunion. That's the easier and more crowded route, so I settled on this tougher lollipop hike which begins below 3,000 feet and requires over 3,200 feet elevation change to reach the summit. The Kephart Prong Trail follows a forest road beside Kephart Prong, crossing it 4 times on log bridges. The trail ends at a 3-way junction beside the Kephart Shelter. I took the Grassy Branch Trail which has the most elevation change of the hike, but it was never difficult. The Dry Sluice Gap Trail then connects with the Appalachian Trail at Dry Sluice Gap. From there I decided to hike up to the real Charlies Bunion, since a side trail was obvious. Although steep, it followed exposed slate and was short. The summit of Charlies Bunion (5,541 feet) has 2 exposed rocks with views west and northeast. From the top you can pick out many of the remote 6K peaks in the northeast Smokies. I kept calling a particular peak Brushy Mountain in this video, it was actually Horseshoe Mountain.
Next I visited the Tourist Bunion, the popular viewpoint that most assume is the only Charlies Bunion. The rocks are more exposed and dangerous here, and the panoramic view is more expansive. The northeast views are not as spectacular, but the western views of Mount Kephart and Mount LeConte are better. After the Tourist Bunion the AT steadily climbs to the Icewater Spring Shelter. I took the Boulevard Trail and then The Jumpoff Trail over Mount Kephart (6,217 feet) and kept hiking out to The Jumpoff, a sheer drop on the east side of the mountain with great views northeast. These views were better than either Bunion, including Greenbrier Pinnacle and Cataloochee Divide. I still had a long slog down the Sweat Heifer Creek Trail, and it started raining about midway near the two waterfalls so I breezed by those without stopping. Overall a great hike, and a fun way to avoid crowds most of the day.
Hike was 16.1 miles with 4,495 feet elevation gain in 8 hours and 20 minutes.

Enjoy breathtaking mountain views along the world-famous Appalachian Trail on this hike to a picturesque stone outcrop known as Charlies Bunion.
The hike begins from the large parking area at Newfound Gap. You travel east on the Appalachian Trail toward Charlie's Bunion. I would highly suggest hiking to Jumpoff, a spur trail, where you see Charlie's Bunion from above along with view of Douglas Lake. After returning from the Jumpoff spur you pass an AT shelter called the Icewater Spring shelter. Continue to Charlie's Bunion for panoramic views including a great view of Mount LeConte.

2016 Charlie's Bunion & Jump Off Fall Hiking - Great Smoky Mountains
Midlife Hikers took a day hike up to Charlie's Bunion and the Jump Off in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was the first time up for a couple of the members and the weather was just about perfect for most of the trip. We were a little early for the fall colors, but the views were still stunning as always!
Charlies Bunion is a rock outcropping that was originally known as Fodderstack. The current name was derived when Charlie Conner went hiking one day with Horace Kephart, one of the early proponents for a national park in the Smokies, and author of Our Southern Highlanders. When they paused for a rest on the rocks, Conner took his boots and socks off and exposed a bunion that resembled the surrounding rocks. Looking at Conner's feet, Kephart remarked, Charlie, I'm going to get this place put on a government map for you. And so he did. info from hikinginthesmokies.com

#1 Tennessee! Hiking Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Road trip! Off to national conference for work in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I made a few stops along the way including the Great Smoky Mountains. I had fun at times, but the Laurel Falls Trail was probably not the best option for me. It was just too many people for filming and photography. If I get the chance to go again, I would love to visit another trail and also stay in Gatlinburg. This is also apart of my bucket list journey to visit all 50 states. I'm starting it off with Tennessee. State 2/50.

Appalachian Trail Camping on Newfound Gap TN/NC State Line - Smokey Mountains
While trying to find a place to camp on our latest adventure, Drew and Amanda find out the hard way, why the Great Smokey Mountains are known for their wet climate. After several failed camping attempts were rained out, we settled at Newfound gap to camp for the night on the AT. In this video, shot at about 6AM, we show the views and explain how and where to camp if you find yourself stuck in between North Carolina and Tennessee.
About NewFound Gap:
The Appalachian Trail (AT) crosses over Newfound Gap Road and straddles the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee for most of its length through the park. Visitors can enjoy a short stroll to stretch their legs or a multi-day backpacking excursion on the AT as it runs through the park.

The Adventures Of Drew & Amanda's 2017 Summer Vacation! WOOHOO! This year we went from NC to Gatlinberg, stopping in Asheville and hiking in The Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains along the way. We camped on the AT at Newfound Gap, the Tennessee and North Carolina State Line and swam in Douglas Lake. We played an escape Game in Pigeon Forge and went horseback riding and so much more! We hope you enjoy watching some of of most fun moments.
