DRIVING AROUND ROME, ITALY
Rome (/ˈroʊm/ ROHM; Italian: Roma [ˈroːma] (About this sound listen), Latin: Rōma) is the capital of Italy and a special comune (named Comune di Roma Capitale). Rome also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. With 2,877,215 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi), it is also the country's most populated comune. It is the fourth-most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. It is the center of the Metropolitan City of Rome, which has a population of 4.3 million residents.[2] Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. The Vatican City is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states.[3][4]
Rome's history spans more than 2,500 years. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe.[5] The city's early population originated from a mix of Latins, Etruscans and Sabines. Eventually, the city successively became the capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and is regarded as a the birthplace of Western civilisation and by some as the first ever metropolis.[6] It was first called The Eternal City (Latin: Urbs Aeterna; Italian: La Città Eterna) by the Roman poet Tibullus in the 1st century BC, and the expression was also taken up by Ovid, Virgil, and Livy.[7][8] Rome is also called the Caput Mundi (Capital of the World).
After the fall of the Western Empire, which marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, Rome slowly fell under the political control of the Papacy, which had settled in the city since the 1st century AD, until in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870.
Beginning with the Renaissance, almost all the popes since Nicholas V (1447–1455) pursued over four hundred years a coherent architectural and urban programme aimed at making the city the artistic and cultural centre of the world.[9] In this way, Rome became first one of the major centres of the Italian Renaissance,[10] and then the birthplace of both the Baroque style and Neoclassicism. Famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects made Rome the centre of their activity, creating masterpieces throughout the city. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, which in 1946 became the Italian Republic.
Rome has the status of a global city.[11][12][13] Rome ranked in 2016 as the 13th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy.[14] Its historic center is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.[15] Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are among the world's most visited tourist destinations with both locations receiving millions of tourists a year. Rome hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics and is the seat of United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The city hosts the headquarters of many international business companies, such as Eni, Enel, TIM and national and international banks such as Unicredit and BNL. Its business district, called EUR, is the base of many companies involved in the oil industry, the pharmaceutical industry and financial services. Rome is also an important fashion and design center thanks to international brands such as Fendi, Bulgari, Renato Balestra, Valentino, Laura Biagiotti. Rome's Cinecittà Studios have been the set of many Academy Award–winning movies.
How to get from Rome's Airport to city center by train
#Rome #distantlands #Italy
Taking the Train from Leonardo Da Vinci Roma airport to city center by train.
From Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, the easiest and quickest way to central Rome is the train. The railway station at the airport can be found outside of Terminal 3. Directions to the Train station are well signposted within the passenger terminals.
There are two types of train that can take you to Rome’s city center. The first and fastest option is the Leonardo Express, and the second option is the local FL1 train.
Both trains leave from the same station at Fiumicino. Follow signs in the airport to the train station. The entire way is covered, and there are moving walkways to make the journey easier. At the station, you can buy tickets from the ticket agents or from a self-service machine. To find your platform, check the departure board. The Leonardo Express trains are shown as “DIR”, while the regional train (FL1) is shown as “REG.” You’ll want the train going in the direction of Orte , the final station on the FL1 line. The station has three platforms and other local trains also terminate here. So do check which platform your train will be at.
Before getting on the train, be sure to validate your ticket at the yellow or green validating machines. These machines can be found on the platform.
If you’re staying in the city center, the most direct option is the Leonardo Express. The Leonardo Express travels nonstop between Fiumicino Airport and Termini Station in 31 minutes. Leonardo Express is available daily from 6:38 am to 23:38 . Depending on the time of day, it departs every 15 – 30 minutes, and costs 14 euro each way. Children under 12 years old always ride free. From Termini Station, you can access central Rome’s two Metro lines, or take a bus or taxi to your destination. And of course, you can easily connect to trains to other parts of Italy.
If you’re staying in the suburbs, or just want to save some money, you can take the regional FL1 train, which costs 8 euro. Trains run daily from 6:58 am until 23:38 . The journey will be longer, because this train makes many stops between the airport and the city. 47 minutes to Tiburtina station. Be aware that this train does NOT stop at Termini Station. There are four stops near central Rome: Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana and Tiburtina. At Trastevere, you can transfer to another regional train going to Termini Station. From the other stations you can connect to the Rome’s Metro. And from Tiburtina, you can take high-speed Freccia or Italo trains to major cities throughout Italy. #DISTANTLANDS #TRAVELTIPS #TRAVEL

20 Things to do in Rome, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (ROMA)
Rome, the Eternal City. After several trips to Italy, we finally managed to visit our biggest oversight: the capital! From wandering through Roman ruins to devouring pizza, and climbing up lookout points to feasting on gelato, in this travel guide, we’re going to share with you 20 things to do in Rome, Italy:
We reached Roscioli which was the best pizza in Rome. Pizzas are served by the weight and we sampled 7 different pizza slices.
We stopped at Largo di Torre Argentina an archaeological site home to four different temples containing parts of the portico of Pompey.
It was a short walk to the Pantheon, a former Roman temple turned church, which dates back to the year 125 AD. The Pantheon boasted the world’s largest cupola up until the 15th century, and it is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in existence to this day making it one of the greatest architectural achievements by the ancient Romans.
If you want to find the best gelato, look for colours that are muted with small batches.
One of the many things to do in Rome, was to visit the Trevi Fountain. This is the largest Baroque fountain in the city.
Rome’s most famed attraction is the Colosseum and its surrounding ruins. We started our visit on Palatine Hill, the most central of Rome's seven hills. What visitors see today are the ruins of the Palace of Domitian, a 1st-century complex, which served as the main imperial palace for 300 years. We continued to the Roman Forum. This square was the centre of ancient Roman life, with government buildings, temples, and markets. We reached the Colosseum, which was the largest amphitheatre ever built and could hold an estimated 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.
Walking through the Vatican Museum was more overwhelming than enjoyable. We visited Vatican City to climb St. Peter’s Basilica for views of Rome.
Castel Sant’Angelo was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family.
Villa Borghese is the 3rd largest public park in Rome with gardens, villas, and ponds with views of the city overlooking Piazza del PO-polo, the people’s square.
That concludes our tour of Rome showcasing the many things to do in Rome on your own trip.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of travertine, tuff, and brick-faced concrete, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius).
The Colosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles (for only a short time as the hypogeum was soon filled in with mechanisms to support the other activities), animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
Although partially ruined because of damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and is listed as one of the New7Wonders of the World. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and also has links to the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit Way of the Cross procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum

Holiday Inn Rome Eur Parco dei Medici - hotel review Rome, Italy
Rome family hotel with pool. 12 kilometers from the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. This Holiday Inn (IHG) hotel in Rome is a decent and friendly hotel - unlike the Crown Plaza in Rome, which is another IHG hotel.
Traveling all over the world, it is interesting how different the Holiday Inn hotels are and how much the quality differs. This hotel pretty much delivers what they promise. Stay here if you don't mind the occasional (charter) group of travelers.
Staff is nice and friendly, the internet works ok, rooms are decent and the pool area with lounge chairs close by is nice. Yes, the pool does get crowded in the summer. So it pays to be an early riser.
BEWARE about the airport shuttle, which does not work after 21.00 (9 pm). That was a surprise to us - but luckily we found a cab-driver with a large enough car to fit all of our luggage, and all 4 of us. We shelled out €40 for that short ride. Fair enough, I suppose.
Water pressure is not all that great and if you are looking for some TV entertainment, you better speak Italian ;-)
The area is rather dull. Not much to see, but then again the Holiday Inn Rome Eur Parco dei Medici is not too far away from all the sights in central Rome.
It is well known that Italy does not have a particularly good service culture. But this hotel is an exception. We found the staff friendly and helpful.
The location is great for the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.
