PROJECT SHONA - Lara Jacobs
Lara's Balance Act:
Lara is a performing artist, presently on tour with Cirque du Soleil. Her act is the highlight at the Amaluna Show. Lara Jacobs assembles a perfectly balanced mobile of 14 odd-sized palm ribs, piece by piece, from a jumbled heap on the floor. Some she picks up with her toes. At the end, she removes the smallest branch and the mobile collapses.
The Nature of Balance:
We are always balancing tasks in our lives, and sometimes it seems as if there is too much on our plates to put in a complete effort. Every little piece in the mobile has the same importance, just like on planet earth.
Lara Balance Act represents exactly this message. The biggest and strongest stick is just as crucial as the smallest and lightest feather.
Making of the Headpieces:
Being on tour with Cirque, having two shows daily, moving frequently and taking care of family requires a lot energy and organization. Lara had to adapt to this life very quickly and learn how to manage all her responsibilities in this new environment and life style. During down times between shows Lara was looking to do something that would help her focus, keep her calm, and fullfill her soul. She started creating Headpieces, jewelry, and other accessories with anything she could find backstage. Quickly the headpieces draw many peoples attention and that was the product Lara focused on mostly. She is expressing her creativity by designing headpieces, which also gives her the necessary balance for her act in the show. It's her way to relax, let emotions free flow, and create beauty.
Goal:
To raise money to invest in future supplies for the Headpieces and invest in production of other products to broaden the repertoire. 20% of the funding will be donated to the Shona Foundation in Africa. The Shona project is described below.
Description of the Project in Congo
SHONA
Shona wants to create a better livelihood for women and men in conflict-ridden eastern Democratic Republic of Congo through the development of a desired product in the United States and Europe.
Goal of SHONA
Shona envisions to become a respected clothing brand with a limited selection of well-made and --designed products sold locally and internationally.
The cloths are hand-made by a group of female and male tailors in Goma, the capital of eastern Congo's province North Kivu.
What is SHONA
Shona, which means sewing in Swahili, is a clothing brand with African and European influence on cut and made of Congolese colorful fabric.
Shona provides Congolese women and men in conflict-ridden and highly underdeveloped eastern Congo with a better livelihood.
Shona has a comprehensive approach to development. Tailors are trained in sewing; receive a constant and respectful income; receive training in saving and investment; are encouraged to spend a proportion on their children's education; while their children receive extracurricular support and motivation to study.
How did SHONA come about?
Walking in the streets of Goma or venturing into the inlands of eastern Congo, one cannot miss but see the many different colorful dresses Congolese women wear. Especially at markets where women gather, the color rainbow is breathtaking. Being based in Goma as a humanitarian worker and researcher, I could not resist but have my own cloths made. There is no lack of tailors in Goma, however, soon I realized that the quality was not satisfactory and the cuts were not of my modern taste. Still wanting to wear the Congolese fabrics, I thought of the idea of creating a tailor shop where a group of well-selected tailors can be trained and cloths designed. Shona will provide these tailors with a better income and bring tasteful, high-quality cloths to people in the United States and Europe.
Why a fusion of the two projects?
Since 'Balance' is the origin of this project it's the perfect way to close the circle. Our society is very imbalanced nowadays and many people on earth rely on others to make it a better and more equal place. The combination of the two projects brings worlds together and helps create resources for people who need them. Donating money to Shona doesn't only give people in Congo hope and improves their life, it also creates a fashion product for the Western World. It's a positive contribution in many ways, which than leads us back to balance, and shows how important each single element is for the mobile to work.
