Nieuwe Kerk
The Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) is a 15th-century church in Amsterdam.
The Nieuwe Kerk is a burial site for Dutch naval heroes, including Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, Commodore Jan van Galen and Jan van Speyk. The poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel is also buried in the church.
The Nieuwe Kerk is located on Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace. The bishop of Utrecht gave permission to use a second the parish church in 1408 because the Oude Kerk (Old Church) had grown too small for the growing population of the city. The Nieuwe Kerk was consecrated to St. Mary and St. Catharine.
The church was damaged by the city fires of 1421 and 1452 and burned down almost entirely in 1645, after which it was rebuilt in gothic style. It underwent major renovation in 1892--1914, which added many neo-Gothic details, and was again renovated in 1959--1980.
Nieuwe Kerk
Amsterdam - Netherlands: 17 to 20 July 2010
Amsterdam is the true capital of the Netherlands, and a magnificent city of art, culture and entertainment, with a population of one million inhabitants. It is also the country's second port, after Rotterdam, with large warehouses, shipyard and passenger terminal.
The original city center, which developed around the port, is literally surrounded by water. It has the sea on one side and the docks, Amstel river and canals on the other. Amsterdam was built on 90 islands and is connected by 500 bridges. Its foundation dates back to 1275, when it was a shelter for Christians and an important commercial center.
Under the Orange dynasty it became the symbol of Dutch wealth, enjoying a period of artistic grandeur and commercial wealth. Several wars and conflicts with England and France, plus German occupation during World War II, jeopardized the status and development of the city. However, Amsterdam was able to recover and prosper. One of its greatest projects was to reclaim the Zuidersee.
The city is particularly compact, with most museums, monuments, shopping streets, markets and other tourist attractions in close proximity. The city is renowned for being a center of the diamond trade. The historical center is charming, and in the so-called hard quarter the bars and restaurants offer food, beer and live music, 365 days a year.
The three main waterways, the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, comprise the core of the canal network, comparable to Venice in extent and intricacy. The cultural center of the city includes the Rijksmuseum, which exhibits work of the Dutch masters, the Vincent Van Gogh Museum, and the modern art Stedelijk Museum.

Netherlands: Amsterdam - The Museum Willet-Holthuysen
The Museum Willet-Holthuysen is a museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on the Herengracht canal. It is the only fully furnished canal side patrician house in Amsterdam that is open to the public.
The house was built for Jacob Hop, mayor of Amsterdam, around 1685. He was not the last mayor to own the house. In 1739 the outside was redesigned to look as it does today, in the highly fashionable Louis XIV style.
In 1855 the house was owned by coal magnate Peter Holthysen (1788-1858), when he died it was inherited by his daughter Louisa (1824-1895) and her husband, art expert Abraham Willet.
This last private owner, Mrs. Willet-Holthuysen, bequeathed the entire house to the city of Amsterdam on condition it became a museum in 1895. It has been a museum ever since.
Some rooms are unchanged, while others such as the kitchen and the conservatory are renovated in 18th century style.
Three floors are open to the public, the basement floor (souterrain), with the kitchen and garden (restored in 1972), the first floor (bel-etage with long hallway), and the top floor, with one bedroom on display and rooms for exhibitions. The museum has a large collection of silverware, plate, and books from the Dutch Golden Age and a substantial collection of art.

Amsterdam (English /ˈæmstərdæm/ or /ˌæmstərˈdæm/;[9][10] Dutch: [ɑmstərˈdɑm] ( listen)) is the capital and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the Dutch capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands[11] though it is not the seat of the Dutch government, which is The Hague.[12] Amsterdam has a population of 837,155 within the city proper, 1,333,729 in the urban area and 1,603,531 in the metropolitan area.[7] The city region has an approximate population of 2,431,000.[8] The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country, and is also North Holland's largest city. It comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 7 million.[13]
Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme,[14] indicative of the city's origin as a dam of the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds.[15] In the 19th and 20th centuries the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands.[16] Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and seven of the world's 500 largest companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.[17] In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city in which to live by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)[18] and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer .[19] The city was previously ranked 3rd in innovation by 2thinknow in the Innovation Cities Index 2009.[20]
Famous Amsterdam residents included Anne Frank the diarist, the artists Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh and the philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city center. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Museum, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 5 million international visitors annually.
Amsterdam Maritime museum
The National Maritime Museum (Dutch: Het Scheepvaartmuseum) is a maritime museum in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The museum is housed in a former naval storehouse, 's Lands Zeemagazijn or Admiraliteits Magazijn, designed by the Dutch architect Daniël Stalpaert and constructed in 1656. The museum moved to this building in 1973.
The museum is dedicated to maritime history and contains many artifacts associated with shipping and sailing. The collection contains, among other things, paintings, scale models, weapons and world maps. The paintings depict Dutch naval officers such as Michiel de Ruyter and impressive historical sea battles.
The map collection includes works by famed 17th-century cartographers Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu. The museum also has a surviving copy of the first edition of Maximilian Transylvanus' work, De Moluccis Insulis, the first to describe Ferdinand Magellan's voyage around the world.
Moored outside the museum is a replica of the Amsterdam, an 18th-century ship which sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies. The replica was built in the years 1985-1990. After an extensive renovation in 2007-2011, Het Scheepvaartmuseum reopened on October 2nd 2011.

WESTERKERK 75ste MUSEUM AMSTERDAM

Netherlands: Amsterdam the Old Church and the New Church - De Oude en de Nieuwe Kerk
The Old Church is the oldest remaining building in Amsterdam and is located at the Oudekerk
Square in the district Amsterdam-Centrum.
At this moment a restoration takes place, which is hoped to end in 2013.
The New Church is located on the Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace. The church is built in the 14th century, when the expanding parish no longer fit in the Old Church.
Nowadays the church is also a cultural center with exhibitions, concerts and lectures.
The New Church is a burial site for Dutch naval heroes, including the Tomb of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
At the time of our visit it was alas not possible to take pictures in the entire churches because of the restoration in the Old Church and an exhibition in the New Church.
