Annaberg Sugar Mill Slave Dungeon Virgin Islands National Park St. John, VI August 24, 2014 5:20 PM
Stains from iron shackles in the Annaberg Sugar Mill Dungeon remind us of the sadness and cruelty and yet despite it all there is a details etching/drawing on the wall said to be that of an imprisoned slave showing the building and the ship likely to have carried them there. Danish Governor Peter Von Scholten abolished slavery in 1848 and United States purchased the three Virgin Islands St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix in 1917 for $25 million. It is a United States Territory. The dungeon is at Annaberg Sugar Mill and once the most productive plantation of 46 or so in the territory and produced the most sugar and rum in the world for a time. This cramped space likely held more than an adequate number and it gets cold at night, the window and door was for ventilation of urine, excrement and the deceased. It is a sad testament of man's inhumanity to man. One love.

St. John Sugar Mill Ruins - US Virgin Islands
Over the years I have visited Sugar Mill Ruins at six different locations on the island of St. John. Reef Bay, Little Lampsur Bay, Brown Bay, Annaberg on Leinster Bay, Caneel Bay and Susanberg on Centerline Road, the only ruins that are not located near the waters edge. All of the ruins used wind power except Reef Bay, which used steam power to press the sugar cane. Produced by Andrew Burnett, Come Out And Play Productions. andrew@goodimpressions.us

Grande Bay Resort: Annaberg Plantation
View the historic ruins of Annaberg Plantation. In 1780, it was one of 25 active sugar producing factories on St. John. Other products produced at Annaberg were molasses and rum. Today the plantation ruins are protected by the Virgin Islands National Park and are open to the public. A trail leads through factory ruins, slave quarters, windmill and other remains. Placards and signs along the trails describe how sugar was produced and discuss plantation life and the history behind sugar plantations on St. John.

Annaberg
The Historic Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins on the Island of St. John are easily accessible, maintained by the Virgin Islands National Park and open to the public. It is a great stop on your way to nearby Leinster Bay, where there is terrific snorkeling.
This visit was on a holiday and we had a special treat as the islanders were celebrating with live music and island fare.
Annaberg was once one of the larger sugar plantations on St. John. The remains of the 40 foot windmill and horsemill, used to crush the sugar cane to extract its juice, still stand. Much of the sugar factory, where the juice was boiled and condensed to make raw sugar, remain as well, as does part of the rum still.
Cultural demonstrations, including baking dumb bread and basket weaving take place Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parts of the Annaberg School, used to educate the children, are located not far from the sugar mill.
A stop at Annaberg is a great addition to your Island paradise vacation. Visit myvirginislandrental.com for more information.

The fauna of the United States Virgin Islands is compromised of 144 species of birds, 22 species of mammals, 302 species of fish and 7 species of amphibians. The wildlife of the U.S.V.I. includes numerous endemic species of tropical birds, fish, and land reptiles as well as sea mammals. The only endemic land mammal however, is solely made up of the following six species of native bats: the Greater bulldog bat, Antillean fruit-eating bat, Red fruit bat, Brazilian Free-tailed Bat, Velvety free-tailed bat and the Jamaican fruit bat. Some of the nonnative land mammals roaming the islands are the White-tailed deer, Small Asian mongoose, goats, feral donkeys, rats, mice, sheep, hogs, dogs and cats. Sea mammals includes numerous species of whales, dolphins, orcas, manatees and dugongs. The islands’ only species of seal, the Caribbean Monk Seal, was deemed extinct in the early 1950s. Virgin Islands National Park and the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument are the two largest among many refugees for numerous species of wildlife. Some of the currently endangered animals includes the West Indian manatee, Virgin Islands tree boa , Saint Croix ground lizard, and the Green sea turtle.
The official territorial bird of the U.S.V.I. is the Bananaquit, which is also depicted in the Flag of the United States Virgin Islands. Besides the Bananaquit, there are more than 140 other species of birds, including for instance pelicans, parrots, parakeets, flamingos, herons, egrets, hummingbirds, sea gulls, doves, ospreys, kingfishers and warblers.
