Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - Borrego Springs, California
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (ABDSP) is a state park located within the Colorado Desert of southern California, United States. The park takes its name from 18th century Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and borrego, the Spanish word for bighorn sheep. With 600,000 acres (240,000 ha) that includes one-fifth of San Diego County, ABDSP is the largest state park in California and, after New York's Adirondack Park, the second largest in the contiguous United States. The park occupies eastern San Diego County and reaches into Imperial and Riverside counties, enveloping two communities: Borrego Springs (home of the park headquarters) and Shelter Valley. --Wikipedia
Along Highway S2 in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Borrego Springs, California
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a spawling state park, the largest in California at almost 1000 square miles, and the second largest in the United States. It surrounds the small desert community of Borrego Springs.
The park features about 500 miles of dirt roads and more than 100 miles of hiking trails, several wilderness areas, fossil beds and pre-Columbian Native American archaeological sites.
A day visit - let alone eight photos - can't do justice to this desert park. But you can get a nice introduction to the park and some of its features along Highway S2.
Bring plenty of food and water. Outside of Borrego Springs, you're pretty much on your own.
The Photos (in order)
S11A0729 - Blair Valley is towards the north end of Highway S2 south of Highway 78; short hikes here lead to some archeological sites
S11A0702 - A large boulder covered with Kumeyaay pictographs is a highlight of the Pictograph Trail
S11A0718 - The Pictograph Trail terminates at the top of a drop-off that features this view of the Smuggler Canyon/Bisnaga Alta Wash area
S11A0752 - The short Morteros Trail leads to an area that features rocks with several depressions in them, created where the prehistoric Kumeyaay ground seeds and nuts into meal more than 2,000 years ago
S11A0763 - Park scenery along Highway S2
S11A0775 - Further south along Highway S2 is Box Canyon, a hiking destination
S11A0782 - Desert scenery at Agua Caliente, along Highway S2
S11A0789 - Stop for the views at Carrizo Badlands Overlook, a few miles before Highway S2 exits the park

We are Anja and Bob and we have been together for 28 years, we both have been born with the Wanderlust Gene and can't get enough of wandering and exploring this beautiful world. We have lived in California, New Mexico, Colorado and Hawaii, but have wandered many states and countries. We are Full-Time RV-ers and travel and work camp in a 2010, Winnebago View 24A Diesel Sprinter. We like to bring our 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited with us to explore where the RV can't go. We are not retired yet so we have to work on the road, we work camp at National parks, Forest Service and State parks and design some t-shirts and stickers and make some jewelry that are inspired by our travels. We will be selling those on our new website soon. We enjoy boon docking in nature or dry camping off grid along the ocean, in deserts and in the mountains. Our other passion is searching for treasures, one of those is a real Treasure Chest hidden by a fascinating gentleman named Forrest Fenn. We have been searching since 2013 and have filmed a few of our searches for you, so you can come along for the Thrill Of The Chase.
