Natural Wonders - Apostle Islands (Wisconsin)
The Apostle Islands are a group of 22 islands in Lake Superior, off the Bayfield Peninsula in northern Wisconsin. The majority of the islands are located in Ashland County, only Sand, York, Eagle, and Raspberry Islands are located in Bayfield County. All the islands except for Madeline Island are part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The islands in Ashland County are all in the Town of La Pointe, except for Long Island, which is in the Town of Sanborn, while those in Bayfield County are in the Towns of Russell and Bayfield. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore provides regionally diverse and unique plant communities.Over 800 plant species occur within the lakeshore, including Wisconsin listed endangered and threatened species. The Apostles are dominated by boreal forest, composed largely of white spruce (Picea glauca) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea), often mixed with white birch (Betula papyrifera), white cedar (Thuja occidentalis), white pine (Pinus strobus), balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides). On Madeline Island, Stockton Island, and several other islands, a unique bog-dune ecosystem can be found near deep bays and enclosed lagoons. According to the National Park Service, One of the greatest concentrations of black bears in North America is found on Stockton Island in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Bears also regularly inhabit Sand and Oak islands, and, due to their mobility, may be found on just about any of the Apostle Islands.

Madeline Island is one of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. Visitors can travel to the island by way of a ferry boat from Bayfield, Wisconsin. At 14 miles long and three miles wide, Madeline Island is the largest of the 22 islands that make up the Apostle Islands archipelago in Lake Superior.
To reach the island, vacationers board the Madeline Island Car Ferry at Bayfield to make the 25-minute ride to paradise or take a water taxi. While on the island, check out the Madeline Island Museum. This state historic site is made up of four log structures including the only remaining building of the American Fur Company built in 1835. There’s also a free one-hour Madeline Island Walking Tour with locals acting as guides and serving up tidbits on the history of the island.
For boat and guided sea kayak tours, check out Adventure Vacations and Living Adventure. This is your chance to explore sea caves, snorkel over a century-old shipwreck and tour the historic lighthouses. Sailing charters are also popular. Dreamcatcher Sailing offers a complete hands-on sailing experience, whether you’re experienced or a novice. End the day at Madeline Island Yoga Retreats, an all-inclusive women’s retreat center that uses yoga and meditation to make the whole mind/body/spirit connection.
When you’re ready to call it a night, consider your options. There are two campgrounds on the island – Big Bay State Park with 60 sites, and Big Bay Town Park with 36 sites. There’s also the Inn on Madeline Island, a conglomeration of properties including rental homes, cottages, condominiums and hotel rooms. More information can be found at the Madeline Island Chamber of Commerce.The Island is home to Big Bay State Park and the magnificent 2-mile Big Bay Beach, The Madeline Island Museum, a Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed golf course, fine dining, galleries, and shops. Wild waves, kayaking through some sea caves on the northwest coast of Devils Island, in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This is in Lake Superior, north of Bayfield, Wisconsin. We did this on June 16, 2009. You might have to take your Dramamine before watching this.
