Delos - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Delos is an interesting UNESCO World Heritage Site, just near the island of Mykonos in Greece. In antiquity it was a very important sanctuary, birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. The Archaeological Sites of Mycenae and Tiryns are a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site in Greece. Located in the Peloponnese, these two cities were the centre of the Greek universe in the pre-Hellenic period, roughly around 1500BC - 1000BC. It's incredible to walk around such ancient ruins and be able to see so much of what's left - a real treat!

The film DELOS 2015, aims at projecting Delos, the largest and richest archaeological site of Greece, worldwide. DELOS 2015 is not an archaeological documentary in its traditional form; it is rather a film that aspires to speak about the diachronic meaning of Delos. It examines why Delos was a ‘sacred place’ for so many centuries; to show its cosmopolitan atmosphere, its social tolerance, its religious tolerance, its acceptance of ‘others’, its liberalism and the harmonious co-existence of civilizations. Delos aspires to be the home-country of ‘Man’ and to be used as a springboard for the utopia of deification and his immortalization.
Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis; remains show that it was inhabited in the 3rd millennium BC. At its height it was second only in importance to the ancient Greeks as Delphi, covered by a variety of temples and sanctuaries. Located just two kilometers from Mykonos, it sits in the center of the islands surrounded by the Cyclades islands, forming a literal circular border. Those involved in the DELOS 2015 initiative are not immersed in wild flowers that grow over the carved marble, but the road to hope and a dream of a modern humanity, anxious in the unending struggle with death and decay.

According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. Apollo's sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece and Delos was a prosperous trading port. The archaeological site is exceptionally extensive and rich and conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port.

Delos is only accessible by boat from Mykonos. It is the mythical birthplace of twins Apollo and Artemis and is one of the best-preserved and most important archaeological sites in Greece. We had so much fun exploring the ruins and using our imagination to picture it as the gleaming city it once was.
There are many tour options, however, we opted to explore on our own to give our family more flexibility. We had an amazing day and the guide map provided was super useful in helping us understand everything we were looking at. // #greece #delos #greekislands #travelwithpurpose
