Arendal city of Norway
Arendal was established in the middle of the 16th century, and was then called Arendall. At that time it had no formal town status.
When Kristiansand was founded by King Christian IV in 1641, he granted the citizens a monopoly on all trade in Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder. This grant, intended to subsidize Kristiansand and its fortifications, placed existing towns in a difficult position. Both towns and the peasants in the up country protested the hardships this caused. As a result, Arendal received royal permission in 1622 to continue as a loading-place for timber until a means could be found to transfer its trade to Kristiansand. More info:

Imaginations can be a powerful thing. They’ve helped us get through childhood and maybe even that office meeting we had last week. But it’s not just about playing around and wasting time. What we imagine and the fictional worlds we create are often greatly influenced by the world around us. Just look at Disney. You might think their animated films are total fiction but many of the locations they use – from palaces to villages – are inspired by real places.
Our imaginations can be a very powerful tool. After all, think back to when you were a kid and how often you dreamt up make-belief situations and characters to help fill a day. Maybe you pretended you were battling with an army of ninja assassins? Perhaps your dolls had their own special characteristics that only you knew about? Maybe that ‘war’ between you and your friends involved thousands of men, tanks and planes that existed only because you imagined they did. In all of these instances, our imaginations play a massive role. Sure, much of what inspired us was totally made up nonsense but there was likely a lot that came from reality. Perhaps something you saw on television, read in a book or a location you visited - all are experiences which can influence our imaginations.
While our imaginations are responsible for a lot of creations, sometimes we use the world around us as a starting point. Just look at entertainment giant Disney. Over the last several decades, Disney has produced a long line of movies which have entertained us and taken us to far off destinations. Often animated and filled with a range of fascinating and bizarre characters, the places Disney uses in their animated hits are fiction – or are they? As you’ll see, the real world can, and often does, play a big role in influencing the movie creators. From castles to towns we see in our favorite animated movies, it turns out there is a corresponding real-life location that inspired the whole thing.

The town of Arendal was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 1 January 1875, a small area with 22 inhabitants was transferred from the town to the neighboring municipality of Østre Moland and another small area with 52 residents was transferred to the neighboring municipality of Øyestad.[4]
On 1 January 1902, the rural municipality of Barbu (population: 6,787) was merged into the town of Arendal. In 1944, a small area of Moland with a population of 21 inhabitants was transferred to Arendal as well. On 1 January 1992, the town was vastly expanded. The neighboring rural municipalities of Hisøy (pop: 4,026), Moland (pop: 8,148), Tromøy (pop: 4,711), and Øyestad (pop: 8,679) were all merged with the town of Arendal which had a population of 12,478, bringing the total population of the new municipality of Arendal to 38,042.

Arendal (Urban East Norwegian pronunciation: (About this sound listen)) is municipality in the county of Aust-Agder in southeastern Norway. Arendal belongs to the region of Sørlandet. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Arendal (which is also the seat of Aust-Agder county). Some of the notable villages in Arendal include Rykene, Eydehavn, Færvik, Strengereid, Kongshavn, Kilsund, Brattekleiv, Longum, Saltrød, Staubø, Vrengen, and Kolbjørnsvik. The offices of UNEP/GRID-Arendal are also located in the city of Arendal.
