The Capitol Theatre, Port Hope
Port Hope’s Capitol Theatre is one of Canada’s last remaining atmospheric theatres. The historically protected building is styled to feel like the courtyard of a Nordic castle complete with twinkling “stars” overhead. The heritage designation means the theatre has had to become innovative with their technical strategies in order to produce large-scale musicals. Technologies such as digital projection allow them to produce shows such as “Singin’ in the Rain!” and “Mamma Mia!”.
Visit the Capitol Theatre website (capitoltheatre.com) for show details & ticket information.

166 & 168 Ontario St, Cobourg - Open House Video Tour
Welcome to 166 & 168 Ontario Street, a side-by-side Victorian duplex well situated within an established neighbourhood that is walking distance to Cobourg’s historic downtown area.
The original homestead was built circa the 1850s, and both units share many of the same interior and exterior features: the original exterior brick and the stone foundation (which is still visible in the unfinished basements), private backyards, perennial gardens, 9’ main level ceilings, hardwood flooring, large principal rooms, crown moldings and deep baseboards, as well as large windows throughout and upper level bedrooms that are characteristic of the era in which this home was built.
Both homes also have important modern updates, including hi-efficiency forced air gas heating, air conditioning, R50 attic insulation, updated electrical, and smoke detectors.
Both 166 & 168 Ontario Street have three bedrooms (166 is currently tenanted, and its interior and backyard will not be seen in the video) - while a wood front deck with covered front doors offers an inviting entry into both units. Both have parking pads, and 168 has an interlocking walkway lined with perennials to a backyard that features a garden storage shed and a wood deck.
168 also features an addition to the original home - a lovely two-storey west-facing sunroom directly off the front deck, which is accessible from the inside, as well (the upper level is accessible from the master bedroom only). Another Victorian-era feature greets you as you enter through the front door - a vestibule with another door opening to the main hallway.
French doors fully panelled with glass open into the living room, which has a fireplace with its original tiled hearth and surround, as well as an elegant white mantle with an accent mirror - and the west-facing bay window has been partially converted into an entryway to the sunroom. The living room opens to a beautiful formal dining area, where a north-facing window allows soft natural light to fill the room - and there is also access from the main hall into this space.
The adjacent kitchen is a great work space featuring wonderful modern updates - abundant cabinetry storage; a centre island with breakfast seating; plenty of counter space; a stainless steel double sink; and includes fridge, stove, over-the-range microwave, and dishwasher. The kitchen has the walk-out to the backyard, and off the kitchen you’ll also find a double coat closet, access to the unfinished basement (which has great storage space), as well as a modern powder room with Euro-style vanity. The kitchen also features pendant and pot lighting, and throughout the home are elegant and classic light fixtures.
The upper level features two family bedrooms - one with a walk-in closet, the other with a double-sized closet - and both share the main 4-pc washroom, which features a ceramic-tiled floor and bath area, as well as a Euro-style vanity. This level also has the convenience of a laundry area with stacked washer and dryer - which is accessible through the gorgeous master suite. This bedroom features a ceiling fan; a walk-in style double closet; its own private wet-facing sunroom; as well as a beautifully updated ensuite washroom showcasing a corner jetted tub, a corner glass shower, as well as a furniture-style vanity with a stone counter.
This duplex within the catchment area of St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School; as well as C. R. Gummow Public School, St. Michael Catholic Elementary School, Cobourg Collegiate Institute, and St. Mary Catholic Secondary School for their French Immersion programs.
A short walk to the boardwalk along Lake Ontario’s shoreline, the public library, Peace Park, the Marie Dressler Museum, and the Cobourg Ecology Gardens - the duplex is also just minutes away from Cobourg’s historic downtown district with its restaurants, shops, and entertainment; Cobourg Beach and Marina, as well as places of worship - while the Via Rail Station, Northumberland Mall, Northumberland Hills Hospital, and access to Hwy 401 are all short drives away.

Northumberland United Way AGM
Northumberland United Way held their Annual General meeting at the Lions Centre in Cobourg on Thursday April 11th. CEO Lynda Kay thanked all the many volunteers and staff for their hard work during the 2012 campaign. Recognition was given to the longstanding commitment of retiring Board members Paul Macklin and Ann Cox, who have both served for six years and Board President Pam Went who is retiring from her role after two years.
United Way welcomed incoming Board members Bill Koch, Fred Marcon and Laurel Savoy. Returning as Board members are Paul Allen, as the new President, Jennifer Moore, Mark Holmes, Dr. Vern Chase, Dale Chipman, Tenday Danha, Peter Delanty, George Gordon, Judy McLean, Leslie Orpana, Brain Ostrander, Jay Robinson, Eugene Todd and Karen Trizzino.
United Way was pleased to welcome Dr. Jacline Abray-Nyman, President and CEO of United Way Centraide Canada, who came from Ottawa to be the guest speaker at today's meeting.
Outgoing President Pam Went stated, An AGM is all about celebrating the achievements of the past year and setting the stage for the challenges of the year to come. I am very proud of what the staff and volunteers of United Way accomplished in 2012 and I am confident that everyone is focussed on repeating our success in 2013. I would like to thank Jacline Abray-Nyman for inspiring and energizing us with her words today.
Paul Allen said, I am very much looking forward to my new role as Board President and continuing the momentum of this very committed organization. I know that there are challenges ahead but feel confident that we will be able to meet them head on.
United Way, in keeping with the spirit and philosophy of community building, took the opportunity at the AGM to recognize individuals and organizations within the County of Northumberland for their outstanding contributions. Three Community Builder Awards were presented at the AGM and several more will be presented in the near future in other venues. In total, up to seven awards will be presented representing each municipality across the county.
Joan Chalovich, in addition to having been a very effective mayor, chaired the 175th Anniversary of Cobourg Committee, is a long-time Chair of the Cobourg Museum Foundation and has supported numerous other organizations including the Northumberland Land Trust, Northumberland Orchestra and Choir, Halcyon Place, the Art Gallery of Northumberland and the United Church. She is a long time Rotarian and has been very involved with Community Living and Easter Seals. One of her nominators noted that: Her work ethic and dedication to the Cobourg community can best be characterized by the phrase service unto others
The Greenwood Coalition was formed in 2009 in an effort to seek solutions for a better life for the marginalized citizens of Port Hope. More than 100 volunteers are involved weekly with providing food, transportation, access to housing and health care, creative activities and friendship to community members who are at risk of falling through the cracks. The story of the Greenwood Coalition is a good news story that demonstrates how the Municipality of Port Hope lives up to its name.
Community Care Northumberland operates out of six satellite offices throughout the county and, along with 900 volunteers, provides a wide range of important support services to seniors and adults living with disabilities. Some of these include Meals on Wheels, Caregiver Support and Respite Service, Diners Club, Transportation, and Hospice and Palliative Service. By providing these supports, Community Care Northumberland helps their clients to remain healthy and independent and in their own homes longer.
The 2012 Thank You Report was available at the AGM and can also be viewed, along with our audited financial statements, on the United Way website northumberlandunitedway.ca, or by contacting the office at the address and numbers listed below.

Cobourg's Heritage
The town is rooted in a rich and colourful history, paying tribute to its early settlement days of 1819 when United Empire Loyalists cleared the land for farming and homesteads. The Cobourg Museum Foundation will open the new Sifton-Cook Heritage Centre to the public on June 9, 2012. It is the first heritage centre in the area, housed in an old limestone building in downtown Cobourg, commonly referred to as the Barracks. The building may have been a military post during the War of 1812.
Armistice18 - Canada's Largest Commemoration of the WWI Centennial
The Town of Cobourg is honoured to be hosting Canada’s largest commemoration of the centennial of the World War 1 (WWI) Armistice from September 21 until November 11, 2018 through the Armistice18 project.
Honouring local war heroes who have served in Canada’s military, Armistice18 will offer a variety of showcases that include music, art installations and history exhibits, speaker series, and theatre productions.
Ten years after the end of WWI, Cobourg’s historic Old Bailey Court Room in Victoria Hall, modeled after London’s Old Bailey Courtroom was the scene of a sensational trial that has been called “the last battle of the Great War.” The case was a libel suit brought by Sir Arthur Currie, the general who had led the Canadian Corps to victory in 1918. The cause of his grievance was a front-page article in a Port Hope newspaper which claimed that Currie had needlessly wasted Canadian lives in the capture of Mons on the last day of the war. The trial placed Canada’s entire role in the Great War under a spotlight and kept the country riveted for weeks.

4th Line Theatre
All of the productions at 4th Line Theatre in Millbrook detail stories from the rich history of the surrounding area.
The farm where 4th Line is situated has been in founder Robert Winslow’s family for 150 years. For almost 25 years he has been inviting people to his beautiful property for a unique, environmental theatre experience.
This year’s summer program features two productions:
August 10th-29th - “Gimme That Primetime Religion”: Hallelujah and praise the barnyard! When an evangelistic ministry, led by the Reverend Bobby Angel, comes to small town Ontario to put on a faith healing rally, the audience becomes the faithful and is swept up in this topical and viciously funny satire. First produced at 4th Line in 2002, this outrageous play with music is a stunning examination of televangelists. 4th Line Theatre founder Robert Winslow reprises his role as Reverend Angel, reuniting him with director Kim Blackwell.
SOLD OUT - “The Bad Luck Bank Robbers”: Tells the story of the August 31, 1961, brazen, daylight robbery of the Toronto Dominion bank in Havelock, Ontario. The bank robbers make off with $250,000 in cash and securities, pulling off the largest, single day bank robbery in Canada at that time and triggering a flurry of speculation over the mystery of the missing money—a mystery which remains unsolved to this day.
4th Line Theatre also offers special events on Wednesdays and Fridays before the shows. For more information and to purchase tickets visit
The Giant Colon Visits Alderville
Hundreds came out to the Alderville Community Centre on March 20th to see the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada's Giant Colon.
The Giant Colon is meant to be a lighthearted way to deal with a serious condition. The CCAC recomments that all Canadians age 50 and over be screened at least once every two years.
Colorectal cancer is a malignant tumour that begins in either the color or rectum. There are several tests generally used for colorectal cancer screening.
Representatives from the Northumberland Hills Hospital, Port Hope Community Health Centre & other groups were also on hand at the event.
The Giant Colon travels across Canada to raise awareness of the importance of screening and the treatment options which are available.
Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable! If caught in its early stages, surgery sometimes combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy can cure a high percentage of cases.
A Landscape Photographer On Holiday in the UK #6 - Penmon Point Lighthouse
My wife and I spent the month of September touring England and Wales and I managed to sneak in a few photo shoots and vlogs along the way.
This is the sixth video of the series, shot at Penmon Point on Anglesey in Wales. In this video I 'work the subject' trying different viewpoints and camera angles as well as different exposure times to try and capture the essence of the scene.
Check out D Griff Gallery for some great videos on Anglesey, Snowdonia and North Wales:
Hope you enjoy :-)
