The Capitol Theatre, Port Hope
Port Hope’s Capitol Theatre is one of Canada’s last remaining atmospheric theatres. The historically protected building is styled to feel like the courtyard of a Nordic castle complete with twinkling “stars” overhead. The heritage designation means the theatre has had to become innovative with their technical strategies in order to produce large-scale musicals. Technologies such as digital projection allow them to produce shows such as “Singin’ in the Rain!” and “Mamma Mia!”.

The most unique and lasting fact of the Capitol Theatre's heritage significance is its very atmospheric character. The Capitol as a purpose built sound movie cinema is not a building in transition from the live entertainment venues that precede it. It is a fully conceived modern movie house.
Managing and Artistic Director, Uwe Meyer, was kind enough to take us through the Capital Theater and provide us with a detailed history of this national treasure which today serves the community of Port Hope and the thousands of tourists who visit Port Hope annually.
Today, the fully renovated Capital theater still shows all the latest movies and serves as a live theater featuring performances by some of Canada's brightest musical stars.

Port Hope Chamber Hosts All Candidates Meeting At The Capitol Theatre
The Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce hosted an All-Candidates Meeting at the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre in Port Hope on Wednesday, September 23rd.
NDP Candidate Russ Christianson, Conservative Party Candidate Adam Moulton, Liberal Candidate Kim Rudd, and Green Candidate Patricia Sinnott were all in attendance.

Port Hope is a beautiful city on the north shore of Lake Ontario with a river that runs through it. This river divides the downtown and seems an apt metaphor for the two aspects of this historical gem of an easy vacation destination.
To some, Port Hope is a shoppers' paradise with all manner of fashion, food and home furnishing retailers. It is also home to many charming B&Bs, boutique hotels and the Capitol Theatre, which is one of Canada's last remaining atmospheric theatres and regularly hosts live theatre, films, concerts and live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera. This town, a mere 90 kms east along highway 401 from Toronto, is an ideal place for a romantic couple's escape or great girl's getaway.
The other side of Port Hope appeals to the more active visitor, with golfing at popular courses like Port Hope Golf & Country and Ash Brook Golf Centre, cycling along the waterfront trail, and of course fishing on the internationally famous Ganaraska River. Jason and Joanne hit Port Hope just as the Steelhead were running in the early spring, but you'll find trout throughout the summer. Salmon are the big draw in the fall.

Waterkeeper Investigation - Port Hope
Port Hope has a long history with nuclear waste. Remnants of uranium from refining days dating back to 1932 can be found in its radioactive soil. When nuclear energy flourished in the 1970s, the Port Hope area became a storage site for radioactive waste – stored around the town and on its shores, on Lake Ontario. Today, high levels of contamination can be found in certain areas.
As an effort to clean up the waste, the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) was approved at a cost of $1.28 billion and is projected to be the largest environmental cleanup effort in Canada's history. But if this cleanup is so significant, why isn't it widely discussed and why is data not easily accessible?
On November 9, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is holding a public hearing for the re-licensing of Cameco's conversion facility. And on November 10, the CNSC is holding another public hearing regarding the storage of the low-level radioactive waste (PHAI). Waterkeeper will present our concerns at both hearings with the goal of protecting swimmable drinkable fishable water for the Port Hope area and Lake Ontario.
