Ashby is a word of Anglo-Danish origin, meaning Ash-tree farm or Ash-tree settlement. The Norman French addition dates from the years after the Norman conquest of England, when the town became a possession of the La Zouche family during the reign of Henry III.
Ashby de la Zouch Castle was built in the 12th century. The town and castle came into the possession of the Hastings family in 1464 and William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings enhanced its fortifications from 1473. In the Civil War the town was one of the Royalists' chief garrisons under the control of Colonel Henry Hastings, 1st Baron Loughborough and commander of the North Midlands Army. When the town fell after a long siege in March, 1646 it was counted a great relief to the surrounding towns and villages.
Many of the buildings in Market Street, the town's main thoroughfare, are timber framed, but most of this is hidden by later brick facades. The Bull's Head public house retains its original Elizabethan half-timbering although most of this was plastered over some years ago and can now no longer be seen from the street. A short distance further down Market Street is a shop, currently occupied as a LOROS Charity Shop, which does retain its original Elizabethan timbers in full street view. There are also Regency buildings in this street. Bath Street has a row of Classical-style houses called Rawdon Terrace dating from the time that the town was a spa in the 1820s.
The local upper school, Ashby School, previously Ashby Grammar School, is a mixed comprehensive school for 14 to 18-year-olds that was founded in 1567. There were formerly two other endowed boys' schools of 18th century foundation.
A local high school, Ivanhoe College, for 11 to 14-year-old children, is named after the historical novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott which was set in the area of the castle. In Scott's novel the town hosts an important archery competition held by Prince John, in which Robin Hood competes and wins.

Ashby De La Zouch Castle - Video Preview from the Gate (Leicestershire, England)
We took a trip to Ashby De La Zouch Castle, however and unfortunately, it was closed. It has very strange hours, especially in the winter! C'mon!... it's a castle, not a waterpark! lol... It's £5.60 to enter for an adult.
The property began as a manor house in the 12th century and reached castle status in the 15th century.
Come and find out about the castle’s colourful history with our lively audio tour. Hear how Edward IV’s Chamberlain Lord Hastings added the chapel and the impressive keep-like Hastings Tower – a castle within a castle.
Visitors can still climb the tower today despite it suffering massive damage during the Civil War. There are great views from the top! Then make sure you discover the underground passage from the kitchen to the tower, probably created during this war, which can still be explored today.
Don't Miss:
Walk the underground passage between the tower and the kitchen
Be amazed that you can still climb to the top of the half ruined tower

Ashby-de-la-Zouch, often shortened to Ashby, is a small market town and civil parish in North West Leicestershire, England, within the National Forest. It is a sister city with Pithiviers in north-central France and lies close to the Derbyshire border.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle was of importance from the 15th to the 17th centuries. In the 19th century the town became a spa town. Before the growth of Coalville, it was the chief town in north-west Leicestershire. In the 19th century its main industries were ribbon manufacture, coal mining, and brickmaking. The town ofAshby-de-la-Zouch was served by the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line of the Midland Railway from 1849. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Shellbrook west of the town and Boundary to its north-west.
Nearby villages include Lount, Normanton le Heath, Smisby, Packington, Donisthorpe, Oakthorpe, Moira, Measham and Coleorton. The towns of Swadlincote, Burton-upon-Trent, Melbourne and Coalville are all within 10 miles (16 km) of Ashby, with the city of Derby 11 1⁄2 miles (19 km) due north. The town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch is situated at the heart of The National Forest and approximately 24 miles (39 km) due south of the Peak District National Park. It lies on the A42 between Tamworth and Nottingham.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle was built in the 12th century. The town and castle came into the possession of the Hastings family in 1464 and William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings enhanced its fortifications from 1473. St Helen's Church is Ashby's original Anglican parish church. It is a late 15th-century Perpendicular Gothic building. The Ivanhoe Baths was an 1822 Neo-Grecian building with a Doric façade 200 feet (61 m) long.
The Grade II listed, 19th-century water tower, located in the town's cemetery, on Moira Road, has been approved for conversion to a house, despite protests from English Heritage, Ashby Civic Society, and local residents. In the 19th century Ashby's main industry was leather working. There was also a cotton textile factory and a glue factory. Ashby was surrounded by coalmines but was never a coal mining town itself.
The town was to be served by Ashby Canal from 1804 but the canal never reached Ashby, as it was constructed only to the town of Moira. Ashby had a station on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line of the Midland Railway from 1845. After the canal was abandoned in stages between 1944 and 1966, British Railways withdrew the passenger service and closed Ashby de la Zouch railway station in September 1964. The railway remains open for freight.
Every May, Ashby holds an arts festival sponsored by the district council. This features local artists, musicians, songwriters, poets, performers, and story tellers. Ashby Statutes, a travelling funfair, is held every September. Instituted by Royal Statute, it was originally a hiring fair, where domestic servants and farmworkers would be hired for the year. During the fair in the 21st century.

Ashby de la Zouch Castle [History Roadshow]
On this episode of the history roadshow we visit Ashby de la Zouch Castle.
A manor had existed at Ashby-de-la-Zouch from at least 1086. Constructed on the site of the older manor house. Ashby de la Zouch Castle today is a ruined fortification. Built by William, Lord Hastings.
The Wars of the Roses broke out in England during 1455 between the rival supporters of the Lancastrian and Yorkist factions. James butler who owned the estate was a Lancastrian, who was captured at the Battle of Towton by the Yorkist leader Edward IV in 1461 and executed; the Crown seized his estates, including the then manor of Ashby de la Zouch.
In 1474, Edward IV granted William the right to fortify, his manors. William set about developing the old manorial complex at Ashby de la Zouch with new buildings.
Edward IV died in 1483, leaving the kingdom to his young son, Edward V, but his uncle, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, had his own ambitions for the throne. Lord Hastings was unwilling to support the deposition of Edward V and, as a consequence, Richard executed him that June, ahead of his own coronation. This left Ashby de la Zouch Castle, only partially completed.
One can only imagine just how magnificent this castle would have looked in its hey day, what we see now is a shell of its former self, but its history is rich and significant. Why not discover yourself this prominent architectural treasure of Ashby de la Zouch Castle.

Ashby De La Zouch
Ashby again as I love it so much! This was filmed yesterday (April 1st) around Ashby.
Working in Ashby de la Zouch
This four minute clip is part of a much longer film which Ashby de la Zouch Museum is working on about life in Ashby in the year 2010 (see also Shopping). We apologise for the rather poor picture quality in this clip but we will be getting a better camera - and a tripod - for fuure ones!
Ashby de la Zouch Castle
Ashby de la Zouch Castle in Leicestershire, England was founded by the Normans in the 12th century. In 1462 Lord Hastings became the owner. The castle was active during the English Civil War. Mary Queen of Scots was detained here during the 16th century. Many members of royalty including Henry VII, James I and Charles I visited the castle throughout history. It is a popular site often visited, and it is still possible to climb the tower even though it was severely damaged during the civil war and also to explore an underground tunnel probably from the same period.
