Beer City: How Asheville Became Beer City
Tony Kiss, the beer reporter, has been following the local craft brew scene since 1994. He traces the history of Asheville craft beer from the launch of Highland Brewing Company through this year's announcements that both New Belgium Brewing and Sierra Nevada Brewing will build east coast expansion breweries here and Oskar Blues Brewing will build an operation in Brevard. With 10 craft breweries already operating in Buncombe County, and smaller nano breweries continuing to come on line, Asheville is poised to become the east coast craft beer center of the United States.

New Belgium's Huge Shipment Arrives
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The final piece of a major shipment by new Belgium arrived at the Craven Street construction site Saturday morning. The brew vessel was delivered safely and it took quite a production to get it there.
Several Asheville Police officers, state police officers and NCDOT workers escorted the 20-foot long lauter tun through Asheville.
It looked otherworldly. It looked like a spacecraft coming, Bonnie Parker, a neighbor, said.
On November 10, the 5,300 gallon unit left Germany for a spot in New Belgium's brewing line. An employee explained the lauter tun will separate water from the grains during the brewing process.
For some neighbors, it's a huge sign of progress.
We're all excited about the brewery. We have some questions and concerns about the roads. But it's exciting, Parker said.
New Belgium employees say after the vessel is installed, roofs will be added to the structures.
We've been working a lot with the immediate neighborhood and they've been great at giving us feedback and letting us know how things are affecting them, Susanne Hackette, Community Relations for New Belgium, said.
Representatives from New Belgium have been holding small community gatherings during their construction process.
Hackette says a new shipment of fermentation vessels will arrive in March.
The company will also be hiring for about 50 positions throughout the year. For employment opportunities, click here.

Asheville Food Park Planned for RAD
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Asheville's River Arts District is facing many changes this summer. The Riverfront Redevelopment Commission has just approved the design for one of them, a food truck park.
There needs to be a place for food. There needs to be a place to build community, Dean Pistor, of the AVL Food Park, said.
Pistor has transformed the space on the corner of Amboy Road and State Street. For the last decade, the building has largely gone uncared for, but Pistor and his team have cleared away the inches of mud and junk to find a gem.
When I started bringing people out to look at the building they said, 'tear it down! Why are you even bothering to keep this?' And being in the real estate business, I looked around and said, well the bones are good!
The AVL Food Park is designed for two food trucks, plus an airstream trailer parked in front. Pistor says Edna's Coffee has already signed up to run the airstream. The space also features a bar, a produce stand and room for pop-up shops.
They can come down here, get a sandwich, get a little bit of groceries. And if you want, you can cruise by the window here and get a cold beer while you're waiting for your sandwich. Then, maybe go home with an onion, Pistor said.
The AVL Food Park has plans to open in July. To apply for a vendor opening, click here.
You can be involved with further discussions about changes to the River Arts District by going to a meeting on June 17 at the Southside Center.

Hurricane Joaquin Full. Farm Girl goes to lunch Legwarmers at the beach
See our FACEBOOK PAGE:
Farm Girl goes to the beach for lunch during Hurricane Joaquin like a regular traveling tourist and ends up barefoot in shorts and legwarmers. The restaurant is situated on this pristine North Carolina Beach with it's semi-covered pier stretching out, inviting visitors to walk out over the dramatic surf. The waves were surely rolling on this day as Farm Girl and Exoman treated themselves to sips of Red Oak draft from one of NC states micro-breweries and Michelob Ultra while coveting a hot plate of calamari and stealing bites of each others rare grilled salmon fillet salad and shrimp & grits.
The 2017 World's Best Cities
From New York to Santa Fe, Honolulu to Nashville, American cities represent some of the world’s most thriving hubs for art, culture, music, and incredible regional cuisine. When we asked T+L readers what urban centers stood out from the pack, they had one clear answer: Southern crowd-pleasers.Eight out of the top 15 cities this year hailed from that region, and the list included iconic weekend getaway destinations like Nashville, San Antonio, and Asheville, North Carolina.“Asheville is a booming city with much to see and do,” said reader Sandra Billings.Other readers noted that the food and drink scene was booming.“The expanding craft beer scene is amazing,” noted Chloe Todd.“The breweries are fun to experience, and the downtown strip has cool, local shops.”Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more.Readers rated cities on their sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.Another common theme among the winners: they all play host to marquee festivals.Austin has been drawing a steady stream of visitors to its annual SXSW Festival, which has become a must-do for actors, musicians, and thought leaders, while New Orleans may be our country’s reigning capital when it comes to celebrating.Beyond Mardi Gras, there’s the French Quarter Festivals, Jazz Fest, New Orleans Wine & Food Experience, and Tales of the Cocktail, a celebration of craft mixology. It also has some of the most inventive chefs in the country right now — including Zachary Engel, the chef de cuisine at Israeli restaurant Shaya.Engel was recently named Rising Star Chef of the Year by the James Beard Foundation.“If you don’t like to eat, dance, or listen to the best homegrown music in America, well then, I guess New Orleans isn’t for you,” said one reader.Just where is the No.1 city in the United States — a place that has held this honor since 2013? Read on for more on why this Southern hot spot continues to delight our readers, year after year.
Farm Girl and Exoman take a trip on the ferry from Fort Fisher to Southport
This video and day were Farm Girl's idea! She planned the trip and it was great! It's a day of travel and dining! Farm Girl and Exoman take a trip on the ferry from Fort Fisher to Southport (Home of the North Carolina 4th of July Festival) on a beautiful August day. If you are looking for things to do a places to visit when you travel to coastal North Carolina, this picturesque little village is a must see. This is in the southeastern part of the state, just over an hour from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
They enjoy sightseeing, a beer tasting at Silver Coast winery with beers from Durham, NC; Savannah, GA; Petaluma, CA and more. Then it's time for dining on salmon and salad at a waterfront restaurant called Fishy Fishy.
Farm Girl stands on a dock by a shrimp boat and gives her best Bubba Gump shrimp incantation. They strolled alond the streets and checked out the real estate scene, seeing one neighborhood home price range being $300,000 to $600,000.
They discussed growing old and dying, listened to some music and had fun joking around in thier own reality TV world. Loved seeing all of the patriotism with the waving American flags that were always paired with the NC State Flag. All in all, it was good and happy traveling to the charming little town of Southport.
First Draft: Sour Beers in the US
Sour beers have been brewed in Belgium for centuries, but only recently have they started gaining traction here in the United States. Michael talks about breweries like Sam Adams and New Belgium that are using local yeast and bacteria to create some of the most unique beers on this side of the pond!
