Commune in France
Avignon, a city in southeastern France’s Provence region, is set on the Rhône River. From 1309 to 1377, it was the seat of the Catholic popes.
It remained under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. This legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) in the city center, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.

Avignon - France-day 1A
Home to nine popes during the 14th century and one of the most beautiful cities in France today, Avignon is a treasure house of palaces, museums and meandering lanes, surrounded by an old fortified wall that still protects it from modernization.
That is one of the beauties of a walled town in Europe: Not only did it protect the town from bandits and invaders during the Middle Ages, but in the 20th and 21st centuries the wall is protecting these historic centers from modernization. This is what the visitors want to see, and it brings in revenue for the city.
This city in the heart of beautiful Provence lays claim to dozens of historic monuments, especially the great Palace of the Popes which was gradually enlarged into an imposing fortification during the 60-year papal residency and is now a museum open to the public.
Begin your orientation with a look at the two main squares in the center of town, the Place de l'Horloge surrounded by cafes and bistros and the adjacent Place du Palais containing the city's most important and historic structure, The Palace of the Popes.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered the largest Gothic palace in all of Europe and a priority place to see in Avignon, although its original furniture is gone and the cavernous rooms are mostly empty.
There is also a wine shop inside the Palace, and if you choose not to pay admission to go see the Palace, by all means go into to the wine shop and the gift shop because their admission is free, and sometimes they have selected wine tastings in the wine bar, and it's a very good place to purchase wine.

We'll take you on a tour of the main highlights as well as explore the extensive pedestrian zone and do some shopping, providing maps and tips to help you get around. As usual, it's an entertaining and practical approach filled with great visuals and helpful descriptions.

Avignon, France - pedestrian zone
Continuing our visit to Provence, France. We're going to take you on an extended walk through the pedestrian zone and narrow streets on the east side of downtown Avignon, in the south of France, an area filled with shops, people and historic buildings. The only way to see this part of town is by walking. Old town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes and narrow residential streets with little back alleys, perfect for strolling.
Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, no cars allowed, especially in the shopping center just southeast of the Place de l’Horloge. It's like one big shopping mall. And this historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day, for it is a compact zone about 1/2 mile wide and about 1/2 mile long.

Avignon Travel Guide
Provence is certainly one of the most visited regions of France. It is easy to figure out why if you look at pictures, videos or if you experience the region by yourself. It offers unlimited things to do and the attractions are varied, from the luxurious city of Monte Carlo and Saint-Tropez to adrenaline loaded canoe tours and to peaceful medieval cities, unending purple fields of lavender and quality food, olive oil and wine.

ROADTRIP around the SOUTH OF FRANCE - Avignon | Pont Du Gard | Garrigues-Sainte-Elulalie | Uzes
Oh the South of France! With its charming sleepy villages, cobble stoned alleys and delectable markets. There’s a certain “je ne sais quoi” about the Provencal Region that makes me want to go back for more.
We stayed in the quaint village of Garrigues-Saint-Elulalie and ventured out on day trips to Uzes, Avignon and the Pont Du Gard. Stay tuned to learn more about this beautiful region.

Avignon - France-day 1C
Exploring on foot the Old Town of Avignon, main city of Provence in the south of France.
Enter the Porte du Rhône gate through the town wall then turn right at Rue Grande Fusterie, with some of its picturesque old houses from the 15th century.
At the end, turn right, then left to Place Crillon, site of an excellent hotel you might consider for your visit, Hotel d'Europe. This is four-star deluxe but has some moderately-priced rooms, especially in the off-season.
With many fine hotels in all price ranges, and strategic location, Avignon makes an excellent home base for visiting this Provençal region. Another hotel you might consider is the Mercure. It's right in the heart of town just between the bridge in the main square and it's a very comfortable three star hotel - part of the vast Accor chain of French hotels, and we found it was a very nice place. Very clean, very modern very friendly.
Stroll one block over to Rue Joseph Vernet, perhaps the prettiest street in town, lined with lovely shops, galleries and restaurants. This street is really at its best late in the day and early twilight - when you have that magical combination of streetlights, shop fronts, busy people out walking and lingering twilight in the sky. It's good . The shops stay open throughout the day, although some close in the midafternoon for a brief siesta - we're still in the south of Europe, after all. And at night stays quite lively. It's very safe spot - 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock at night, because the shop will be closed, usually by about 8 o'clock, but the restaurants, cafés and bars are open, so to be sure to pay several visits to this wonderful Rue Joseph Vernet.
Be sure to walk a few blocks up and down Rue St. Agricol, a classic side-street which offers a similar environment of pleasant shops and leads to the main square of town, Place de l'Horloge. Notice how they have iron posts to protect the pedestrians from the automobiles, because this busy street is open to traffic, and yet remains very safe because of the design. There is a rich variety of types of shops here and throught the town center.
Next, walk over to the busy main street of town, Rue de la République, where you will find the Tourist Information Office, and really the main collection of shops and people. Be sure to visit this information office and get their free Welcome to Avignon brochure with descriptions of the major sites and an extremely useful map that provides four walking routes to follow while you are exploring the city. The tourist bureau has put colored arrows on the sidewalks coordinated with the map to help keep you on track.

Avignon Farmers Market
Cities all across France now have modern and efficient “farmers markets” in practical indoor halls, with big parking garages overhead. These were built so this important slice of the local culture can survive the competition brought on by France’s hypermarchés (huge suburban shopping centers). As I’ll explain in this clip, at these markets you'll find lots more than a charming and colorful people scene; you can also eat well and affordably. I find that in my guidebooks all across Europe, for lunch I’m recommending sitting down with the local shoppers at the traditional market. What’s your favorite market experience (or meal) in Europe?
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.

PROVENCE, France - Beautiful LAVENDER FIELDS and FRENCH RIVIERA (Avignon, Nice, Monaco)
After an incredible Italy-Croatia trip, my friend and I have decided to embark on a short South of France trip. Ever since I saw pictures of the beautiful French lavender fields, I have always wanted to travel to South of France and this summer was my opportunity. We did arrive in mid-June, so most fields have not bloomed yet, but its beauty can still be felt (fields usually bloom end-June to early-July). Southern France has so many little cute towns such as the little towns of Gordes and Isle sur la Sorgue. And of course, the iconic French Riviera, also known as the Cote d'Azur with its milky blue water and beaches. Nice is a city that truly has it all. Right next to all of this is the little city state of Monaco that boasts some of the most luxurious attractions on Earth. All in all, I love France.
