Bahia Honda State Park (Calusa beach and Bahia Honda Rail Bridge), Big Pine Key, Florida (USA)
Bahia Honda is one of the many islands of the Florida Keys archipelago, a chain of coral islands and reefs in the southeastern United States.
U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at approximately mile markers 36-38.5, between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key 12 miles (19 km) west of Marathon, close to the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge.
The island is virtually uninhabited, being home to the 524-acre (2.12 km2) Bahia Honda State Park. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys.
The park is 212 hectares and offers 4 km of beautiful sandy beaches, including Calusa Beach on the Gulf of Mexico and Sandspur Beach on the Atlantic Ocean. With these two beaches, Bahia Honda State Park offers the most beautiful beaches in the entire Florida Keys.
The beach or rather the view here is actually the highlight of the Bahia Honda State Park. In the shade of the large palm trees you enjoy the view of the beautiful white sand beach, the old railway bridge of the Flagler Oversea Railroad, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Bahia Honda Bridge of the Oversea Highway.
The Overseas Railroad (also known as Florida Overseas Railroad, the Overseas Extension, and Flagler's Folly) was an extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West, a city located 128 miles (204.8 km) beyond the end of the Florida peninsula. Work on the line started in 1905 and it operated from 1912 to 1935, when it was partially destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane.
In Bahia Honda State Park there are also changing facilities and sanitary facilities at Calusa Beach. The usual barbecue facilities for the USA are available as well.

Some sizable sharks under the bridge, Bahia Honda State Park, Big Pine Key, FL
I think they're lemons, blacktips or bulls but I'm not sure. I'm not a biologist. They look much smaller than they were, the bridge is high. I'd say some of these sharks were around 8-10 feet long. I was snorkeling just yards from them and didn't realize it until we went onto the bridge and looked down. SORRY ABOUT MY FINGER ruining the view.

Bahia Honda (meaning deep bay, in Spanish, locally pronounced: BAY-ah HON-da, also pronounced (in Spanish): Bah-EE-ah OWN-dah, is an island in the lower Florida Keys.
Bahia Honda State Park. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys. Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway once ran through the present parkland to Key West. Built between 1905 and 1912, it was destroyed by the severe Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Later, the railroad bridge foundations were used to build the Overseas Highway, which became U.S. 1
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.

Long known for its natural beaches, Bahia Honda State Park has a lot of healing and rebuilding to do after the ravages of Hurricane Irma
Once known for its natural white sand beaches and botanically rich tropical hammocks, Bahia Honda State Park now bears scars from Hurricane Irma’s wrath.

Still a destination for snorkeling, diving, and camping, Bahia Honda State Park looks nothing like it did before Hurricane Irma bore down on Florida last fall. The famed natural white sand beaches on the Atlantic Coast have washed away, exposing a ledge of coral rock where iguanas now bask. While the park’s outfitter will keep you busy with offshore tours and kayak rentals, portions of the park that we all knew and loved are now gone.
Both Buttonwood and Bayside Campgrounds have been reopened, and the cabins have been restored. Sandspur Campground and the road down to the beach and the Silver Palm Trail have washed away.
The butterfly garden and its adjoining parking area washed away and the restrooms were destroyed. They are now replaced with a restroom trailer and outdoor showers. The entire canopy of tropical trees above the Old Bahia Honda Bridge Trail has been stripped away, and the trail has been shortened a little at its promontory.
According to park officials, it will be late in 2019 before visitors can expect restoration of the Atlantic side of the park, including the campground. Meanwhile, you can play at the bayfront beach near the marina.
While the park park contains more than 150 species of native plants, including the largest known stand of Florida silver palms, their status remains unknown. Much of the canopy and rich understory once seen around the marina area and along the Atlantic shoreline is gone. From a distance (the Overseas Highway) it appears that the silver palms may have weathered the storm just fine.
