An Ilocos Tour would not be complete without a visit to Bangui Wind Farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte.
There are 20 units of wind turbines (windmills) constructed on a single graceful arch, equally spaced 326 meters apart, along a 9-kilometer shoreline of Bangui facing the West Philippine Sea.

Bangui Windmills (Philippines Travel Vlog #9)
Bangui Wind Farm is a wind farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The wind farm uses 20 units of 70-metre high Vestas V82 1.65 MW wind turbines, arranged on a single row stretching along a nine-kilometer shoreline off Bangui Bay, facing the West Philippine Sea.
Ilocos Norte Province tends to have more wind than many other provinces due to its location between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. They get regular and fresh North Westerly winds that make it a great location for wind energy generation.
The towers are an impressive 60 meters high and are located just 10 meters from the sea edge. Each wind turbine is capable of producing electricity up to a maximum capacity of 1.65MW.

Vlog 18: CLIMBING THE ICONIC WIND TURBINE IN BANGUI BAY (Ilocos Norte, Philippines)
It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for The Travelling Foxes to climb the iconic wind turbine in Bangui Bay, Ilocos Norte. Northwind Power is the first commercial wind farm in South East Asia, and became the pioneer for wind energy in the Philippines. Check out the interview we did with Kres and learn some technicalities of the wind turbines located in the Northern Philippines.
The bus trip to Ilocos Norte was well worth it as we filled our days with a lot of adventure. We stayed in a resort in Pagudpud, and also spent a night in the best hotel in Laoag, which is Fort Ilocandia Resort, built by former President Marcos for his wedding.
There are a lot of activities to do in Ilocos Norte - some of which we covered here. Shooting with rifles (this can be done in many locations), sand dunes, going hiking to visit hidden and magical waterfalls in Burgos called Kaangrian Falls, and most importantly, eating the best food in Northern Luzon, which is from Ilocos. Ilocos is known to have a lot of delicious food so we asked our friend, Anna, from Germany to let us know how the food tasted.

Bangui and Pagudpud is at the northern part of Ilocos Norte. Travel by private vehicle from the capital city of Metro Manila will take from 11 to 13 hours, depending on the number of rest stops made.
Bangui Windmill Farm is part of Ilocos Norte's effort in green energy. Completed in 2005, it is composed of 20 units of windmill that line the shoreline of Bangui Bay. Each windmill is 230ft high with 135ft blades.
For a closer look at the windmill, drop-by AlexAndrea Restaurant. They'll let you park in their property even if you're just going there for the view. They do cook a good meal too. For large groups, contact them through their Facebook page at
I consider Saud Beach as one of the best beaches in the Philippines. Due to the distance, being in the farthest north of the country, few visit this place. The sea is facing the northwest side of the archipelago towards the West Philippine Sea. Sand is powdery white. The water is turquoise and not polluted. Only a handful of resorts line the beach. Compared to the Blue Lagoon at the other side of Pagudpud, this is one of the best in Ilocos Norte.
We stayed in Arinaya White Beach Resort. Lean month rate for an airconditioned room for 2 for overnight stay is P3,500.00, while the non-airconditioned room is P1,750.00. If you failed to book a hotel, don't panic. There are several hotels and bed and breakfast rooms in the area.
Best time to visit these destinations is always during lean months in the Philippines from June to October and during weekdays.

Windfarm in Ilocos Norte // The Largest in Southeast Asia
The 150 MW Burgos Wind Farm is the largest wind power project in Southeast Asia and is located within a 600-hectare site. The facility consists of 50 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3 MW, generating electricity to the Luzon Grid. The project also included a substation and a 43 kilometre long 115 kV transmission line.
The first phase of the project consisted of 29 wind turbines and additional infrastructure; the second phase included another 21 turbines. The project required exceptional coordination as the second phase was started before the end of the first phase, and they were commissioned at the same time.
WSP served as owner’s engineer providing project technical and monitoring support.
The project received winner of the 2015 Asia Power Engineering International Best Renewable Energy Project – Burgos Wind Farm, Philippines (Power Engineering International) Certificate of Recognition for achieving 5 million safe man-hours with no lost time incident.
