Fountain with Messages in the Water! (Batavia Downs Casino, near Buffalo, New York)
Checking out Batavia Downs Casino, just outside of Buffalo, NY! They offer $10 free play each week, for 4 weeks. They also have a horse racing track and a restaurant where you can watch the races from! Probably my favourite casino in the Buffalo area.
Batavia Downs is a harness racing track and casino in Batavia, New York. It is located in Genesee County between Buffalo and Rochester just off of the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90). It opened on September 20, 1940, and is the oldest lighted harness racetrack in the United States. The track is exactly .5 miles (0.80 km) long.
In 2001, the New York State Legislature passed a bill to allow New York State racetracks to have video lottery terminals (VLTs) inside the racetracks, making them “racinos”.
Batavia’s video lottery era began on May 18, 2005 with the opening of Batavia Downs Gaming. Over 5,000 people attended opening night. The casino has over 600 machines made by Bally, IGT and Spielo.

BATAVIA/Local activists would like to see Batavia become a sanctuary city
About 15-20 local activists stood on the corner of West Main street and Holland avenue on Saturday to express their dislike of the NYS Reproductive Health Act.
Some activists were pushing the thought of Batavia as a sanctuary city.
We would all love to see Batavia as the first sanctuary city nationwide, says activist/organizer Ann Maria Scalia.
We would love to shine a light on our little city as a community that defends life.
Others who stood outside the Planned Parenthood location, which was closed for the day, said they were there to let women know there are other options out there.
Mona Doyon of All Babies Cherished in Batavia says that women are not alone when they become pregnant.
Maybe they are homeless, we help them with housing, maybe they need help signing up with WIC or food stamps, we help them advocate for themselves, they take parenting classes, maybe they want to go back to school, they get encouraged when they come in, they have their own mentor, its a great program, says Doyon.
A representative from the Light House Station Maternity Home, located in Warsaw, was across the street from the activists and wanted to let women know there is a place for women and their babies to stay for up to 9 weeks following the birth of their baby.
Light House Station opened in November of 2018 and was 5 years in the making. The Maternity Home is a one of a kind in the GLOW region, with similar homes located in Buffalo and Syracuse.
We feel its one thing to say to a woman, don't have an abortion, and its another thing to say to her let us walk with you and that's what we do, we stand alongside the moms. I'm not here to be political, I'm not here to have an angry voice, I'm here to say let us stand with you, I know its hard, there is nothing harder, so let us support you, says Sarah Sutay of Light House Station.
In response to the activist statements outside of Planned Parenthood, Debora McDell-Hernandez, Senior Director of Public and Community Affairs at Planned Parenthood released this statement in regards to the NYS Reproductive Health Act:
On January 22, 2019, New York State scored a victory for women by safeguarding women’s access to safe and legal abortion with the Reproductive Health Act (RHA). This was necessary since the federal administration continues to attack reproductive health care. RHA accomplishes three important things. RHA recognizes that abortion is health care, not a crime, by moving abortion law from criminal law to public health law where it belongs. RHA brings the protection of Roe v. Wade into state law by ensuring that New Yorkers can access needed care throughout pregnancy when their health or life is endangered, or their pregnancy is not viable.
Finally, RHA clarifies that trained health care providers acting within their scope of practice can provide abortion care. This ensures that more New Yorkers have access to early and safe abortion care.
It is not surprising that those opposed to abortion have chosen to spread misinformation. There is no such thing as abortion during labor and delivery. Any suggestion otherwise is false and downright offensive to women who face pregnancy complications and the medical providers who care for them. It is appalling that in 2019, anti-choice extremists are still trying to shame women about their reproductive health care.

BATAVIA/ Renovated Community Living Center at VA
Veterans and their families celebrated at a ribbon cutting ceremony of the renovated Community Living Center, Maple Lodge, at VA Western New York Healthcare System in Batavia, Friday afternoon.
The $2.8 million dollar renovation project and 11,000 square foot unit completed by a service disabled veteran owned small business consists of 19 private and 1 semi-private room accommodations for greater privacy among veteran residents.
Upgrades to central heating, air conditioning, and ventilation were made for superior air quality to meet modern standards. Maple Lodge uses the Holistic Approach to Transformational Change Model (HATCH Model) putting the needs, interests, and lifestyle choices of individuals at the center of care giving.
Long term care is provided on this modern, yet comfortably designed unit. “This new environment, along with our high level of compassionate care provides Veterans a safe, comfortable place they can truly call home.” said Dr. Grace Stringfellow, M.D., Chief of Staff.
The design consists of an open kitchen, eating areas, and several living room spaces complete with a fireplace. The kitchen table always has snacks or fruit available along with coffee, tea, and the ability to make fresh baked goods reinforcing the home atmosphere. Lastly, all rooms now have state of the art lifting equipment for a safe patient environment that concurrently lowers the risk of staff injury.

Hurricane Irene Binghamton Disaster
Hurricane Irene Binghamton Broome County (WBNG Binghamton) Broome County tells people to prepare for the possibility of flash flooding between Saturday night and Monday morning.
An advisory from the county states there is every indication the area will experience moderate to heavy rain and high winds as Hurricane Irene moves into the region.
The National Weather Service projects Broome County could see about five inches of rain between Saturday evening and Monday morning.
It will likely result in wide spread flash flooding.
While river levels are expected to rise, they are expected to crest below flood stage.
The advisory also says high winds are a concern.
Falling trees and tree limbs can cause power outages.
Broome County advises people that winds from this storm could produce the same kind of damage to power lines the area experienced Memorial Day weekend when it took several days to restore service.
A spokesperson for New York State Electric and Gas said that NYSEG crews ready to respond and restore service. It expects the biggest impacts on its service area will be in eastern and southeastern New York.
The following is information provided by Broome County on how people should prepare.
In the event of widespread damage, local responders and relief workers may not be able to reach you immediately. Basic services you rely on everyday—such as gas, electricity, water, sewage, and telephone could be unavailable for days or even weeks. Depending on the type of disaster, you may be forced to survive on your own at home or even at a shelter; therefore, you should have a plan in place for emergencies so that you know what to do if you or your family members get separated. Additionally, it is important to set aside some basic supplies to help you survive, as well as means to get emergency information such as open shelters or evacuation orders.
Gordon Joseph Cummings
Interview with Gordon Joseph Cummings.
From the Cornell Memorial Statement:
Gordon Joseph Cummings was born in King Ferry, Cayuga County, New York, on April 30, 1919, the son of Peter and Ida Cummings. During Gordon's formative years, when life in the 1930s of the Great Depression was so difficult and opportunities were limited, Peter Cummings alternated jobs between farming and work in Ithaca; in these alternations, young Gordon attended schools in both locations. These early years in a small upstate community laid the groundwork for a theme that would run through Gordon's entire life, namely, a love for rural life and the small communities in the state.
The Cummings were Irish and Roman Catholic, and as such exposed to the underside of upstate New York in the 1920s and 1930s. Gordon told of the Ku Klux Klan dumping nails in the road in front of their farm. However, typical of Gordon, he told this straightforwardly, without bitterness, even with a twinkle in his eye.
Gordon graduated from King Ferry High School and immediately enrolled at Cornell University. His university education was interrupted by World War II, during which he was stationed in Okinawa and Japan. He was in Nagasaki, Japan just five days after the atomic bomb destroyed that city. As an agent of the Counter Intelligence Corps, he had close contact with the Japanese people and came to appreciate many aspects of the Japanese and other Southeast Asian cultures. After the war, he returned to Cornell to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948, a Master of Science degree in 1950, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1954. Immediately after completing his Ph.D. degree, he joined the Department of Rural Sociology in the College of Agriculture as an Assistant Professor with a predominant responsibility in Extension. The core subject of the more than 50 reports, articles, and papers he would write, dealt with Leadership in Rural Life, How to Identify Policies and Organization to Improve Community Life, and, near the end of his career, The Evaluation and Improvement of Health Care in Rural Areas. One of the many projects in which he participated and of which he was most proud was Operation Advance. This work on public policy and public decision-making was joined by Professors Clifford R. Harrington and Edward A. Lutz, and together they prepared discussion guides on topics such as Community Growth and Development, Education and the Future, Resources - Land, Water and People, The Changing Environment for Living, Work and Play, and Managing Community Growth. Related to these topics, among the courses he taught were those titled Small Towns, Sociology of Leadership, and Organization of Rural Health Care.
His projects were largely implemented through the auspices of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service. He also served as Department Extension Leader for many years and, along with Professor Robert Polson, on the New York State Citizens Council Field Service Committee. In 1975, he spent his sabbatic leave with the New York State Health Department in Albany, helping to organize Comprehensive Health Planning and community mammogram centers for breast cancer screening. He also served as Chair of the Planning Committee of the Governor's Health Advisory Council.
Professionally, he was a member of the Rural Sociological Society, the Adult Education Association, and the Community Development Society .
His passion for the local community extended into his retirement years. He became Historian for the town of Genoa, and the village of King Ferry in Cayuga County, and was the first President of the Board of Directors of the Genoa Historical Association. Gordon was President of the Community Development Federation and on the Board of Directors of Blue Cross of Central New York.
After a long marriage he was predeceased by his wife, Jane Powers Cummings, and is survived by son Thomas (Beverly Ludke) of Pittsford, New York; son Gregory of Washington, D.C.; son Daniel (Danielle) of Syracuse, New York; daughter Molly (David Rose) of Rochester, New York; and four grandchildren. At his funeral Mass in King Ferry, they observed that the heart of his life concerned his family; their accounts of Life with Pop, were filled with love and affection, and, most of all, with respect. They also recognized that Gordon Cummings loved Cornell as an institution in its variety of activities, and especially its Cooperative Extension program in playing out its role as part of a Land-Grant University, as well as the various communities of people with whom he worked so closely.

Casino Tells Jackpot Winners Machine Malfunctioned
More from Inside Edition:
While some people are lucky enough to win big at casinos, the hardest part can sometimes be collecting the winnings. Inside Edition’s investigative team has found people who thought they'd be taking home huge earnings, only to discover that wasn't the case. Katrina Bookman, 44, hit a $42.9 million jackpot at Resorts World Casino in Queens, N.Y. She posed next to the winning machine as it displayed her earnings. As a crowd started gathering around, security showed up.
