Door County Sea Kayak Symposium 2012 - In Review
Over 130 sea kayakers of all levels arrived at Rowleys Bay Resort the second weekend in July for the 9th annual Door County Sea kayak Symposium. The yearly gathering of new enthusiasts and old hands was another smashing success. Our good weather karma continued with three days of sun during the day and even an evening of slight rain on Saturday, which was a welcome change for many drought weary paddlers. The food was delicious, the water was beautiful, the company was top notch, and there were more kayaks than you could shake a stick at. What could be better?

Buying a Kayak for First Time? Know Kayak Types.
Kayaking: What to Know When Buying a Kayak - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
My name is Steve Gibons and I am with Scappoose Bay Kayaking here in Oregon. We are an organization that has been here for about the last 11 years, and we are here to help people out in regards to buying kayaks. My understanding is that you would like to know a little bit about kayaks. And the first thing that we always ask people when they are interested in buying a boat is two things. What do you see yourself doing in the kayak? If you are just looking for something that you are going to use a couple times during the summer, well then of course you might not be interested in a larger investment. But if you find, which you will, that you really enjoy kayaking, then there is different degrees of kayaks that you might be interested in buying as well, and it can go right from the very beginning all the way to the more expensive boats.
What I mean by that is, is in the early stages, a basic beginner kayak, is what we call a recreational kayak. A recreational kayak is a boat that has a large cockpit, which is what this opening is. It is very easy to get in and out of, it is adaptable to all sizes of kids and adults. It is very stable, it is relatively a little heavier than some other materials. It is made out of a plastic, what we call a milk bottle plastic or a polyethylene plastic, and to keep its structural integrity, because of the material, it has to be made very thick in order to stay strong, and that adds to the weight. So in your basic beginner model kayaks, it will have a tendency to be a little bit heavier but much more stable because of their widths and of their length.
As you progress up into different styles of boats based upon your own paddling skills, you might also start working yourself up into boats like we call this a touring-style boat. And a touring-style kayak can still also be made out of the polyethylene material, but you will notice that it is going to be alot thinner, they are going to be a lot longer, it will have a little bit different sized openings to get into the cockpit itself, and they are more for the advanced paddling where you might take yourself out into more adverse conditions or different types of paddling situations.
There are some that are sort of a hybrid between the two, and this particular boat, it is a real light-weight kayak, but it does have a large cockpit, so it has a recreational size cockpit and yet the material is a thermal formed material called carbonite. And because of the structure of the material itself is very light-weight. So in this particular boat, it is a little bit more money, but you are getting a large cockpit, you are getting a lighter weight boat, and you are getting a very durable boat as well.
The degree of cost varies on the actual material as well. In your recreational style boats you can usually get into a recreational style boat for around $500 to $600, somewhere in that area. There are some that are even less in price but you might find that they are also less in size and they will not necessarily fit you. As you advance up into better quality materials, whether it is stronger or more light-weight, the price also goes up because the material cost more and the construction and the design and everything also increases. So the material styles varies in sizes and also the weight will change based on the material themselves.
The reason why I ask what you are going to do with a kayak is because people have a tendency to want to buy the least expensive boat they can to get into and onto the water. And in some cases that boat might be the boat that you will stay with forever. But in my experience for the last 35 years in kayaking, what usually happens is people will like the sport, they will buy an inexpensive boat to get into it, they will paddle that boat around for maybe a summer or so and then realize that they want to paddle more often, they want to go to more places, they want to do more things and in some cases a recreational style boat is not the proper boat for going out into more advanced paddling areas. So they will buy another boat-they can either turn this in a resale or alot of times they will keep it at their garage or at their home or their cabin or whatever for when they are friends come to visit who might not be as paddling-skilled as they have now become, and they will buy an upgrade boat and have a better quality boat to paddle around in.

Black Friday shopping in Somerville
The craziest shopping day of the year in Massachusetts began shortly after midnight Friday morning.
Hundreds of shoppers lined up outside stores to get the first crack at limited supply deals when doors opened, in some cases as early as 12:30 a.m. Blue Laws in Massachusetts prevent stores from opening on Thanksgiving Day, but that didn't stop shoppers from spending the holiday standing outside stores like Best Buy and Target.
Jin Lau had his family deliver turkey, stuffing and collared greens to him outside Target at South Bay Plaza, where he started waiting in line at 4 p.m. on Wednesday for a 50-inch Element HDTV for $229.
Lau, 24, wrapped himself in five layers of clothes, gloves, a beanie and a scarf and carried a portable phone charger, Black Friday shopping essentials he learned the hard way outside the same store last year.
I've had a lot of Thanksgivings, said Lao, the first shopper in a line that would stretch to hundreds before the store opened at 1 a.m. I can take two away for Target and TVs.
About 15 people waited across the parking lot outside Best Buy at 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving day. Brother and sister Wesley Jean Baptiste, 24, and Mondy Cameau braved the cold weather for deals on televisions and laptops.
The worst part about it is the temperature, said Jean Baptiste, who joined the line at noon on Thanksgiving. If this were San Diego, we'd be sitting pretty.
The early morning rush Friday was only the start of a big shopping weekend. The National Retail Federation expects shoppers to spend more than $600 billion between Friday and Monday.
Retailers are being aggressive with promotions and they have big items with big markdowns, said Madison Riley, a Boston retail strategist with Kurt Salmon, a consultancy company. The traffic always responds to that. I sense that it's going to be a big big day.
Retailers already agree that Friday is shaping up to be a successful day. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said that as of 8:15 a.m. more than five million shoppers had purchased doorbuster specials that were guaranteed to be in stock for at least one hour. Target Corp. said it had a strong start to the day and traffic on Target.com was exceeding previous records.
Shoppers all over the state joined in the ultra-early rush. Miles away Boston's South Bay Plaza, at a Target in Somerville, more than 150 people calmly filed into the store at 1 a.m. The first 18 had snagged vouchers for the Element television deal and most shoppers made a beeline to the electronics section for iPads, which came with a $100 gift card.
This is my first Black Friday shopping and it wasn't as bad as I thought, said Megan Connolly, who bought a television sound system, video games, and a baby stroller. There was no pushing or fighting.
Some diehard shoppers like Boston University student Dorothy Ovalles came out for the early morning openings and were still going strong after the sun came up.
Ovalles, 21, hit the Cambridgeside Galleria at midnight, shoppped until 6 a.m. and then went to Copley Place, where she carried bags from Lord and Taylor, Gap, Old Navy and H&M. Despite the shopping marathon, she said she doesn't get too crazy.
The South Shore Plaza in Braintree opened for business at 12:30 a.m. Soon, there were lines wrapped around Target and Sears had quite a line, said Vicki Bartkiewicz, the mall's director of marketing. The Pink had a line until 4:30. Their door buster was the fleece sweater and pants.
Bartkiewicz said that for the past few years she has seen stores starting to offer deals in the weeks leading up to Black Friday.
Starting in November the stores were having some amazing discounts prior to Black Friday, she said, but the day after Thanksgiving remains popular. For a lot of people Black Friday is a social event, kicking off the holidays.

Philadelphia Naval Shipyard
The Navy Yard, formerly known as the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and Philadelphia Naval Business Center, was an important naval shipyard of the United States for over a century. It is now a large industrial park that includes a commercial shipyard, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard.
Philadelphia's original navy yard, begun in 1776 on Front Street in what is now Center City, was the first naval shipyard of the United States. The new, much larger yard grew up around facilities begun in 1871 on League Island at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers.

SUMMARY
=======
Minnesota ( (listen)) is a state in the Upper Midwest and northern regions of the United States. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd U.S. state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. The state has a large number of lakes, and is known by the slogan the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Its official motto is L'Étoile du Nord (French: Star of the North).
Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 22nd most populous of the U.S. states; nearly 60% of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area (known as the Twin Cities), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government, and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now partially cleared, farmed, and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.
Minnesota was inhabited by various indigenous peoples for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. French explorers, missionaries, and fur traders began exploring the region in the 17th century, encountering the Dakota and Ojibwe/Anishinaabe tribes. Much of what is today Minnesota was part of the vast French holding of Louisiana, which was purchased by the United States in 1803. Following several territorial reorganizations, Minnesota in its current form was admitted as the country's 32nd state on May 11, 1858. Like many Midwestern states, it remained sparsely populated and centered on lumber and agriculture. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, a large number of European immigrants, mainly from Scandinavia and Germany, began to settle the state, which remains a center of Scandinavian American and German American culture.
In recent decades, immigration from Asia, the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America has broadened its demographic and cultural composition. The state's economy has heavily diversified, shifting from traditional activities such as agriculture and resource extraction to services and finance. Minnesota's standard of living index is among the highest in the United States, and the state is also among the best-educated and wealthiest in the nation.
