In last week of October I visited Bedse Caves/ Bedsa caves near Pune. Karla caves, Bhajya caves and Bedse caves are three important Buddhist caves around Pune. Very few people are really aware about this cave but the place is worth to visit.

Best time to visit are mornings, especially around sunrise. The caves are located near Pune, Maharashtra, India and is a short hike of 400 steps up the hill.

vlog captured during a Quick visit to Bedse Caves with Bajaj Avenger. In this vlog, I'll share general route details, location, history and importance of Bedse caves. And will take this opportunity to share my long term ownership experience review about the Bajaj Avenger 220.
Bedse Caves(Bedsa Caves) are situated in Maval taluka, Pune District, Maharashtra, India. The history of the caves can be traced back up to 1st century BC. There are two main caves. The best known cave is the chaitya garaj or prayer hall with a large stupa, and the other cave is a monastery or Vihara. Both the caves contain beautiful wall carvings.
Bedse Caves are comparatively less known and less visited of the trilogy of the caves (Karla - Bhaje - Bedse) in Mawal Region near Pune. Also close to the Bedse caves are the famous chain of hill forts - Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona adjoining the Pawana Dam.
My experience of Bajaj experience have been excellent. Bike didn't give any major maintenance issues during its running of 70k kms in last 6 years or more. I am awaiting my Royal Enfield Himalayan now, but still appreciate this great machine. To Avenger's credit, it's the only bike which kept the CRUISER game running in India when all other manufacturers were running behind the SPORTS bikes during last decade.

Bedse Caves (also known as Bedsa Caves) are situated in Maval taluka, Pune District, Maharashtra, India.
The history of the caves can be traced back up to 1st century BC. There are two main caves. The best known cave is the chaitya (prayer hall) with comparatively large stupa, the other cave is monastery - vihara. Both the caves contain some carvings although are less ornate than later c aves. Both caves are facing eastwards so it is recommended to visit the caves early morning, as in sunlight the beauty of carvings is enhanced. There is also a small Stupa outside to the right of the main caves.
Until around 1861 the caves were regularly maintained - even painted. These works were ordered by local authorities in order to please British officers who often visited caves. This has caused loss of the remnants of plaster with murals on it.
Bedse Caves are comparatively less known and less visited. People know about the nearby Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves but have hardly heard of Bedse Caves. The trilogy of the caves (Karla - Bhaje - Bedse) in Mawal Region can't be completed without Bedse. An easy hike through steps leads to the caves. Also close to the Bedse caves are the famous foursome of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona forts adjoining the Pawana Dam.
The best time to visit Bedse Caves is the rainy season as the hills are filled with lush greenery during that time. Also many small waterfalls are created that can only be enjoyed during the rainy season. As this is one of the lesser known spots, not many tourists throng the place, so makes it easy to enjoy the views

Our trip to Bedse Caves, one hidden Marvel in the Mawal Area, 10 kilometres from Kamshet near Pune, Maharashtra state in India. Less know and really peaceful place to visit. It is advisable not to park the vehicle close to the foothills since the roads are very narrow and fits only one vehicle. Best time to visit is during first half of the day, when the sun light falls on the caves.

बेडसे लेणी ह्या महाराष्ट्राच्या पुणे जिल्ह्याच्या मावळ तालुक्यातील बेडसे गावातील आहेत. पुणे-मुंबई महामार्गावरील कामशेतहून पवना धरणाकडे जातांना हे गाव लागते. भारत सरकारने या लेणीला दिनांक २६ मे, इ.स. १९०९ रोजी महाराष्ट्रातील राष्ट्रीय संरक्षित स्मारक म्हणून घोषित केलेले आहे.
सुमारे १५० मीटर लांबीच्या दगडात लेण्यांचा गट खोदला गेला आहे. येथे एक चैत्यगृह काही विहार, खोदीव स्तूप, आणि पाण्याची कुंडे आहेत. हे आद्य कोरीव काम इसवीसन पूर्व पहिल्या शतकातील आहे असे मानले जाते. या लेण्यांना मारकूड असे नाव प्राचीनकाळी होते असे येथील शिलालेखात कोरलेले दिसते.
येथील चैत्यगृह भव्य आहे. याची उंची सुमारे २८ फूट आहे. समोरील भागात चार खांबांवर आधारित व्हरांडा आहे. बाजूच्या भिंतींमध्ये खोल्या आहेत. यांच्यामागे खोलवर कोरलेले चैत्यगृह आहे.
चैत्यगृहा समोर मध्यभागी चार खांब आहेत. यातील दोन पूर्ण आणि बाजूला दोन अर्धव्यक्त आहेत. यांची रचना अशी अहे की त्यामुळे या खांबांनी हा तीस फूट लांब आणि १२ फूट रूंदीचा व्हरांडा तोलून धरला आहे असे दिसते. हे खांब लेण्यांच्या पायापासून थेट छतापर्यंत जातात. चैत्यगृहात हर्मिकेचा चौथरा आहे. त्यावर ते मोठे घट कोरलेले आहेत. या घटातून अष्टकोनी खांब बाहेर पडलेले दिसतात. याच खांबांच्या शिरोभागी जमिनीच्या दिशेने उमललेल्या कमळाची रचना केलेली आहे. त्यावर एक चौरंग कोरलेला आहे. छताकडे एकदा हर्मिकेच्या चौथऱ्यावर हत्ती, घोडा, बैल या पशूंवर स्वार स्त्री-पुरुषांच्या जोड्या दिसून येतात. अतिशय रेखीव, प्रमाणबद्ध आणि सुंदर असे हे शिल्पकाम केले दिसते. त्यांचे सौष्ठव, डोळ्यातील सौंदर्य, अंगावरील मोजकेच पण उठावदार दागिने, आगळी वेशभूषा हे बेडसे येथील वैशिष्ट्यच आहे. या खांबांच्या शीर्षभागावर उमलत्या कमळाचे कोरीवकाम आहे. यातील प्रत्येक दल हे स्वतंत्र अगदी त्याच्या त्या मधल्या फुगीर शिरेसह दाखवलेले दिसते. येथे कोरलेल्या हत्तींना सुळे दिसत नाहीत. त्याजागी खोबणी केलेल्या दिसून येतात. त्यावरून तिथे खरे हस्तीदंत बसविले जात असावेत असा अंदाज करता येतो. व्हरांड्याच्या अन्य भागावर चैत्यकमानी, वेदिकापट्टींचे नक्षीकाम केलेले आहे.
मुख्य चैत्यगृहाच्या दाराशी असलेल्या भिंतीच्या वरच्या बाजूस पिंपळपानाची मोठी कमान कोरलेली आहे. या कमानीखाली तीन चैत्यकमानी कोरलेल्या दिसोन येतात. यातील मधल्या आणि डावीकडील कमानी खालून चैत्यगृहात जाण्याचे मार्ग आहेत. उजवीकडच्या कमानीखाली जाळीदार छिद्रांच्या नक्षीतून सुंदर गवाक्ष कोरलेले आहे. यातील प्रत्येक चैत्यकमानीमध्ये फुला-पानांची नक्षी गुंफलेली दिसते. चैत्यगृहीचे छत गजपृष्ठाकृती आहे. या छतातून सव्वीस खांबांची निर्मिती झालेली दिसून येते. स्तूपावर त्यावेळेच्या लाकडी छत्रावलीचा खांब आणि त्यावरील कमळाचे छत्र व्यवस्थित स्वरूपात दिसते. या लेण्यात छताला लाकडी तुळया होत्या परंतु त्या चोरीस गेल्या असे सांगितले जाते. चैत्यगृहात सुंदर चित्रकामही होते. त्याचे काही अंश इथल्या भिंती-खांबांवर आजही दिसतात.
बेडसे येथील स्तंभ मौर्य शैलीतील आहेत असे मानतात. तसेच त्यांना त्यांना पर्सिपोलिटन धर्तीचे स्तंभ असेही म्हंटले जाते. पर्सिपोलिस हे इराणमधील एक प्राचीन शहर होत. मौर्य साम्राज्याचा संबंध येथ पर्यंत होता असे हे स्तंभ दर्शवतात.
एका खोलीच्या द्वारपट्टीवर एक लेख आहे. ‘नासिकतो अनदस सेठीस पुतस पुसणकस दानं’ या कोरीव अक्षरांचा अर्थ - नाशिक येथील श्रेष्ठी आनंदच्या मुलाने या लेण्याचे दान दिले. या लेखात आजच्या नाशिक शहराचा प्राचीन उल्लेख मिळतो.
या लेण्यांच्या बाहेर पाण्याची कुंडे आहेत. यातील एका कुंडावर त्यासाठी दिलेल्या दानाचा लेख दिसून येतो.
