On a spur of the moment trip, we decided to catch a train from Munich, Germany to Salzburg, Austria - which is just a 1.5 hour train ride away. We only had a few hours, so I wanted to make the most of eating Austrian food for the time we had. We also were able to walk around Salzburg and visit some famous attractions during the day.
Here’s the list of Austrian food I ate during a one day trip to Salzburg, Austria:
1. Cafe Am Kai - Cafe Am Kai is a nice trendy cafe along the river with great views. I ordered a kleiner brauner, a type of Austrian style coffee and an apple strudel. Total price - 14.40 EUR for 3 of us
2. Bärenwirt Restaurant - This is a restaurant that serves fantastic home-style Austrian food in Salzburg. To begin with I ordered frothed beer soup, which was very creamy and pretty good. I ordered my first ever wiener schnitzel in Austria, which is one of the Austrian food national dishes. Finally I had to try the Austrian käsespätzle an extremely warming and cheesey pasta dish. Price - 33.90 EUR
3. Balkan Grill Walter - Balkan Grill is known to serve the best bosna sausage, a type of Austrian food sausage that originates from Salzburg. It was honestly an amazing sausage, but I think it would have been better with some kind of sauce on it. Bosna sausage - 3.70 EUR
4. Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln - There’s no doubt Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln is the best of the best, an institution beer garden and hall in Salzburg. They serve your beer right out of the barrel, and it’s amazingly crisp. You can then walk around and order Austrian food from any number of the food stalls. Small beer - 3.10 EUR, ribs and sausage plates - 14.95 EUR, fish - 9 EUR
We then completely ran out of time and had to run to the Salzburg train station to catch our train back to Munich!

Zum Craftbier Fest in Wien haben Next Level Brewing ihren Fruity Punch der breiteren Öffentlichkeit erstmals vorgestellt.
Hinter Next Level Brewing stehen die Jungs des Beer Store Vienna, die ja allesamt ihre bierige Karriere als Heim- und Hobbybrauer begonnen haben und brautechnisch offensichtlich jetzt zum nächsten Level aufbrechen.
Bei den österreichischen Staatsmeisterschaften haben sie bereits individuell Preise abgeholt - das Können steht hier also nicht wirklich zur Diskussion. Aber in großem Maßstab ist das eben doch noch einmal eine andere Hausnummer.
Die Idee hinter Next Level Brewing ist dabei auch simpel wie spannend zugleich. Als Gypsy Brauer sind sie in Brauereien des Landes (zumindes vorerst noch national) unterwegs und brauen ihre Biere. Die guten Kontakte aus dem Shop dürften dabei nicht hinderlich gewesen sein. So ist der Fruity Punch beispielsweise im Brauhaus Gusswerk in Hof bei Salzburg entstanden. Einer Brauerei bei der sich zum Beispiel auch Brew Age aus Wien heimisch fühlen. Das jeweilige Bier soll dann aber eher ausschließlich in einer Brauerei gebraut werden. Andere Biere, andere Brauerei, die dann aber immer fix.
Beim Fruity Punch bin ich sehr gespannt, wie der aus der Flasche schmeckt. Bislang kenne ich den nur vom Faß - da hat er mich aber schon sehr überzeugt.
Überzeugt waren offensichtlich auch die Juroren des World Beer Idol Awards in Prag, die dem Bier eine Bronze Auszeichnung verliehen haben. Herzlichen Glückwunsch und jetzt aber ran den Speck...

Cheap and Cheery: Lunch in Vienna
It’s Day 64 of my 100-day trip to Europe, and I’m on the streets of Vienna, making sure my guidebook readers have the best eating options. And just a couple of blocks from the crowds, there are some amazing opportunities to eat well, memorably, and cheaply.
Information is power, and when it comes to travel, I want my guidebooks to give you lots of muscle:

Mit dem High Diver geht es bei Next Level Brewing mit einem IPA nach amerikanischem Westküsten Vorbild weiter. Und damit ist die Schlagzahl der Beer Releases in 2016 gefühlt doch recht hoch bei dieser Wiener Gypsy Brauerei.
Aber das soll ja gar nicht´s machen, aber wenn man sich ansieht in welchen Leveln man bereits gebraut hat, dann ist der High Diver doch ganz sicher auch ein Next Level für die Jungs vom Beer Store Vienna. Immerhin hat man das jüngste Kind im Stall in Gols auf einer 60 Hektoliter Brauanlage hergestellt. Biere zuvor waren in 10-20 Hektoliter Maßstäben hergestellt worden - also jedenfalls eine Verdreifachung der gebrauten Menge. Hut ab, da geht was!
Und wenn man die - zugegeben etwas spartanische - Homepage betrachtet, dann dauert es gerade einmal noch 11 Tage (Stand 19.05.2016) bis wir uns schon auf das neue Release - ein Smoked Porter - freuen können.
Insofern scheint es mit der Kreativität ungebremst weiterzugehen und offensichtlich fehlt es bei den gebrauten Mengen auch nicht an Fans dieser nicht mehr ganz so neuen Kleinbrauerei. Bei dem High Diver wage ich einmal zu prophezeien, dass es nur wenige Monate dauern wird, bis auch dieses Bier die ersten Preise einheimsen wird, wie es schon seine Vorgänger getan haben. Ich wage mich mal ganz weit nach vorne und würde für mich behaupten: Unter den IPAs aus Österreich hat dieses Bier definitiv einen Platz unter den Top3.
An diesem Wochenende könnt ihr Euch selbst ein Bild von diesem Bier machen - vorausgesetzt ihr seid in Wien -, denn beim Wiener Bierfest am Hof schenkt Next Level Brewing aus. Sicher auch den High Diver.

A new Naschmarkt Wien - Daily Market Vienna - Österreich / Austria video
The Naschmarkt is Vienna's most popular market. Located at the Wienzeile over the Wien River, it is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) long.
The Naschmarkt around 1900
The Naschmarkt has existed since the 16th century when mainly milk bottles were sold (as milk bottles were made out of ash (wood from an ash tree), Asch (German for ash) led to the name Aschenmarkt). From 1793 onwards, all fruits and vegetables brought to Vienna with carts had to be sold there, while goods arriving on the Danube were sold elsewhere. Nowadays, one can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from around the world, exotic herbs, cheese, baked goods such as bread, kaiser rolls, and torte, meats, and seafood. There are also many small restaurants which offer e.g. sushi, kebab, seafood, traditional Viennese food such as Kaiserschmarrn or Palatschinken (compares to rolled up crepes) and stalls which offer clothes and accessories. Since 1977, the market extends further along the Wienzeile to an adjacent area every Saturday, when a flea market takes place there.
The atmosphere of the Naschmarkt is famous far beyond the borders of Vienna, and large numbers of tourists visit the market every year.

Viennese Café - Eating Austrian Cake and Coffee for Breakfast in Vienna, Austria
Join us as a visit a local Viennese Café (Aida) to sample Austrian cake, eat wiener pastries and drink local coffee for breakfast in Vienna, Austria on our last day in the city. After showing you a popular touristy coffeehouse we thought we'd take you to a more local one that was less crowded a chilled out on a Sunday morning in Vienna, Austria. Overall, we ordered the following food and drink items from the menu at Aida:
1) Wiener Melange Coffee (espresso with cream and milk)
2) Mozart Cake (Chocolat fondant cake with icing and other layers)
3) Schinkenröllen (Deli meat with cream cheese stuffed inside)
4) Topfenstrudel (Austrian pastry with sweet curd cheese)

Viennese Café - Eating Austrian Cake and Coffee for Breakfast in Vienna, Austria Travel Food Video Transcript:
Well good morning good morning again from Vienna (Wien). It is a Monday morning and it is actually our last day in this beautiful city. It is not even our last day. It is our last hours. Last hours. We're going to be leaving in just a few hours to Bratislava but yeah. Yeah, we thought we'd show you take you guys to a more local cafe. We kind of showed you what a fancy and famous one looks like but we haven't taken you into a local one so we're going to do that today.
So the place is called Aida and it has been around since 1913 so my goodness over a 100 years. I imagine they've had plenty of time to perfect their pastries, their coffees, their cakes. So for my drink I got the Aida Melange so this is an espresso with steamed milk and whipped cream that I have since you know mixed into the cup.
Exactly. And I also ordered that too. Haha. Mmmm.
It just sounded so good. Cream. Yes, please. Yes, please.
That is quite nice. Oh, and have I mentioned everything here is pink. Yep. Everything. Everything. The menus. The cakes. The waitresses uniform. The chairs. It is all pink. Everything looks pretty in pink over here. Pretty in pink.
And so someone ordered the Schinkenröllen. So this is really neat because it is basically like a ham slice and then inside of it, it looks like it appears to be some cream cheese. Yeah. And some chives and then bread.
Mozart cake.
Alright, so for something sweet I'm just going to read it off the menu because too many ingredients. I ordered the original Mozart Torte Wien. So the original Viennese Mozart Cake. And it is described as a dark sponge filled with the finest nougat and pistachio marzipan encased in a light chocolate fondant icing.
There is a lot going on here. That sounds pretty good. I like fondant icing. That is like poetry. I like chocolate. Yeah, there is a lot of stuff you like so. Oooh. It looks thick.
Look at the filling. The filling is so thick. it is like thicker than the cake itself. Yeah.
Mmmmm.
Good stuff.
And up next Sam ordered topfenstrudel. Topfenstrudel so basically this is like strudel, a pastry with Austrian cheese in the middle. Yeah, it looks like a cream cheese. Yeah, it is basically what you'd normally have on a cheesecake kind of filling.
If you guys come here definitely get the Mozart Cake. Trust us on this one.
Time for price point at Aida. Yeah, so in terms of the price point that came to 17.30 and that was for the two coffees and the three food items. So yeah, it was definitely more affordable than some of the more touristy and famous cafes and it was just really nice. It was really cool coming on a Sunday when it was nice and relaxed outside so yeah nice way for us to end our time in Vienna (Wien) and now we're off to Bratislava. Tata.
