Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Fort Atkinson (#503)
[Latest Airdate: October 4, 2018]
[Original Airdate: January 21, 2016]
We wish you could have seen John's face when he experienced Fort Atkinson for the first time. When we walked into Nasco's demo room where health care professionals were practicing life-saving skills on realistic looking body parts, his chin hit the floor. When he saw the fence around the rock that marks the spot of Atkinson's original fort, his eyebrows furrowed with puzzlement. When we told him to get in the canoe, his eyes widened with joy. (John Gurda's widened with fear!) When he slid down the slide at Busy Barns Adventure Farm, his smile was ear to ear. But when they put a goat in his lap, well, let's just say that his expression changed to one of panic! When he heard Bill sing at Café Carpe, his eyes closed in serenity. And when he tasted the sweet potato soufflé at The Fireside Dinner Theatre, his mouth watered with sheer joy.
Fort Atkinson made John even more expressive than usual --- and that's not easy to do!

Capital Brewery's Supper Club Lager
Let's go back to an era when Supper Clubs were in vogue and Wisconsin had numerous regional breweries creating their unique versions of American Style Lagers for those dining establishments. Back when beers exhibited regional soul. When regional beers were as much a part of an evening at a local Supper Club as friends, family and a good dinner. Supper Club is an eminently drinkable version of a true American Lager. It has a greater depth of refreshing malt character than the mass marketed versions of this style. Supper Club is clean yet satisfying. Classic Wisconsin Lager at it's finest. Now on tap at the Capital Brewery Bier Stube, and found elsewhere in and around Madison WI and Dane County.

Leinenkugel's Hoppin' Helles Lager The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer along with P-Diddy are hoppin' the levels helles with Leinenkugel's Hoppin' Helles Lager.
Brewed by: Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company Wisconsin, United States
Traditional Helles-style beers tend to be a tad malty. Leinenkugel's Hoppin' Helles is our spin on the style that puts it a bit on the hoppy side with five all-American hops. It starts bright and citrusy with a nice tropical aroma that ends with a tangy spice finish.

The Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company is a regional American beermaker based in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, United States. Leinenkugel is mainly distributed in the Upper Midwest, but is available in limited quantities throughout the United States. Its products are colloquially known as Leinies.
The brewery was founded in Chippewa Falls in May 1867 by Jacob Leinenkugel and John Miller. Miller sold his stake in the company in 1884.
The original brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
During Prohibition, the company produced near beer known as Leino as well as soda water. The company expanded from its local roots in the 1970s, introducing a light beer. Miller Brewing Company, now a subsidiary of SABMiller, bought the company in 1988.
On March 28, 2006, the company introduced Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat, which is brewed with wheat, hops, and coriander. In 2007, Summer Shandy was a new seasonal beer. It is a wheat beer mixed with lemonade. Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout was re-introduced in select markets for a limited time beginning November 2010. In 2012 the company introduced: Snowdrift Vanilla Porter and Lemonberry Shandy. Another new beer, Canoe Paddler, was introduced for spring and summer 2013.
Leinenkugel has two breweries: the original, located in Chippewa Falls, and the 10th Street Brewery (formerly the Val Blatz 10th Street Brewery) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Approximately 95% of Leinenkugel's sales, by volume, is brewed in the Chippewa Falls location.
The 10th Street Brewery, opened in 1986 by G. Heileman Brewing Company for the Blatz label, was purchased by Leinenkugel in 1995. It produces Leinenkugel's Big Eddy ale line, a series of seasonal, high ABV beers.

Wisconsin Travel and Life : Vines & Rushes Winery Ripon, Wisconsin
Wisconsin Travel and Life : Vines & Rushes Winery Ripon, Wisconsin
My mom and I took a trip to the Vines & Rushes Winery in September. During the harvest in September, Vines and Rushes opens up their doors and gives free tours and wine tasting.
Wisconsin wine has been growing in popularity over many years, and the state boasts many fine wineries North to South. So if you want to try something other than beer check out Vines & Rushes in Ripon Wisconsin. The Green Lake and Ripon, WI area already have many fine lakes, golf courses and restaurants, so stop by the winery to add a cherry to the top of an already beautiful vacation.
The tour consists of a factory and vineyard tour where they will describe the wine making process and the different varietals of grapes needed to grow in the harsh environment of Wisconsin.
Wine tasting includes many different types of white and red wines. They also have hard cider which is produced from apples grown at relatives apple orchard.
This marked the end of a 5 month period I spent back in the United States to help my dad battle Leukemia. My mom and I went to Vines and Rushes to let out some steam and the winery did not let us down. They are wonderful people.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Stevens Point (#707)
[Latest Airdate: May 31, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 22, 2018]
When John said, Let's get straight to the point, we're so glad we took him literally because Stevens Point earned tons of brownie points! Everyone in this fabulous city pointed us to a great episode, and stayed on point throughout with their pointed remarks.
Point Brewery was an obvious (and great) choice, and you can't talk about Stevens Point without pointing out the trivia contest. But we are so glad when we can point to the not-so-obvious community stars, too. What do governors for dams, wheelchairs, potatoes, toys, tea, women's clothing, Father Fat's food, Iroquois raised beadwork and art paper have in common? Yep. All pointed out in this episode.
But it's pointless to continue with our list because after watching this episode, you will completely get the point. Stevens Point IS the point!
