Artful Vietnamese
Welcome to this episode of Vietnam diaries.
In this episode, we will show you how skilled are Vietnamese artists.
The fine art of silk painting.
The traditional Vietnamese art of silk painting has become famous around the world for its simple poetic themes and vibrant colors. The success of a silk painting very much depends on the quality of the silk, and this depends on many factors, from the quality of cocoons to the decisive techniques of starching and weaving.
First let us take a look at how silk is made.
Differently with other kinds of paintings, the silk canvas are usually not painted. The Vietnamese traditional silk painting style tends to use the silk canvas directly as the background of the painting. The colors are used delicately with the canvas to make Vietnamese silk paintings. Whatever style they follow, silk painters must have an intimate knowledge of the material and fully exploit its shininess and its attractiveness. Painting silk is full of changing and unexpected characteristics, and a wrong stroke of the brush is irreversible.
These paintings are made by the Vietnamese artists in Hue, central of Vietnam (110km from North of Da Nang.)
Each painting is a great description of the beautiful nature and talented skills of the Vietnamese.
Danang marble statues-
Vietnamese are highly skillful and they can carve beautiful statues with marble. There are lots of reason why marble is wonderful for the statues or sculpture. Marble is almost right density to handle, curve, and glossy once polished. Mable is also a good and best stone for human statues.
There are four basic methods of creating sculpture: Modeling, Assemblage, Casting and Carving.
Carving is a subtractive sculpting technique in which the sculptor chips away from the chosen material. Assembling is an additive sculpting technique that involves bringing materials together to form an art piece.
We could see a lot of marble works which are beautiful and exotic.
There is a huge market for these marble statues. These are exported to the world as well.
There are different marble types based on the colors. White marble, cream marble, black , red, brown and pink marble.
White marble Inspires purity and neatness, as well as providing light and spaciousness to any home or space, particularly when not combined with any other type of marble.
The cream shade combines perfectly with the wide range of existing natural colors, such as ivory and beige.
Black is the colour most commonly associated to luxury and elegance.
No doubt, Vietnam artists are highly skilled. There is a huge industry for their products. However there is room for standardization and marketing. And Vietnam is getting aggressive in this.

Bag snatcher caught on camera, Saigon police launch hunt
Le Lam Bao Tran, 40, was taking photos with her family at the corner of Cao Ba Quat and Thi Sach Street in the central District 1, a five-minute drive from Ben Thanh Market, when two men driving on a motorbike approached her and one of the two grabbed her handbag and escaped.
The bag had S$2,000 ($1,480), credit cards and other personal identification papers.
By chance, her relative clicked on the camera and captured the moment that the robbery took place.
The family has filed a report with the local police and provided the photo identifying the snatcher. Police are now hunting for the thieves.
The snatching happened so suddenly that she could not react in time, said Tran, who’d returned HCMC to celebrate Tet, the Lunar New Year festival, with her family.
Street crime, especially those targeting tourists, has been a rising problem in Saigon for many years now, giving the nation’s largest city an unsavory reputation despite its many other attractions.

IS VIETNAM COFFEE THE BEST? ????????
Today we’re going on a one day tour and explore where to eat vietnamese village food, using OneTrip food tour vietnam packages, and this is our vietnam travel vlog video.
Today we had an authentic Vietnamese experience. Onetrip had organised for us to have lunch at a local rubber plantation village home. This made our second day in Saigon all that more exciting.

Rubber Plantation Lunch Location : Intersection of Tinh Lo 6 and Tinh Lo 15.
PS : The location is a private home, and they don’t speak any English. This arrangement was made specially for us, and is something unique to Onetrip bespoke packages only.

This journey takes off right after our Cu Chi tunnel experience ended, and after an hour or so being on the road we arrived to this local village home. The home owners were thrilled to have us and had prepared an amazing array of dishes to suit our taste buds.
For lunch, they served us rice with - fried tofu, fried mushrooms, egg omelette, fried chicken, water spinach and vegetable soup. For drinks, we had some really cool jasmine tea which we always love being served in Vietnam.
Along the route we also had the opportunity to do a quick stop at a large rubber estate and our Onetrip guide was happy to share with us some fun facts about the famous rubber tree.
The itinerary then took us back into the Ho Chi Minh City for the drop-off, and we decided to make that point - the popular “Malaysia Street”, which sits right across Vietnam's biggest street shopping center, Bến Thành Market.
Something definitely we would highly recommend, and something everyone should plan to do if you're visiting Saigon for the very first time!
Thanks everyone!

#Episode 4 Thilanna in Vietnam
I was sitting by the street of Hanoi Vietnam, on a beautiful sunset. Across the road, was an old beautiful building painted in yellow. This street specially sells frames for pictures. In my mind, so many things were running, so many messy thoughts, co-incidentally aligning with the city of Hanoi, messy, chaotic but beautiful. I tried not to analyse my thoughts, just accept and sketch.

Truck driver fined for going wrong way on Saigon expressway
His license has also been revoked for five months.
Nguyen Xuan Han, 25, the truck driver, was running on the emergency lane of the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway in the wrong direction on Monday night. The truck was flashing its priority lights, forcing other vehicles to make way, according to a two-minute video that has been widely shared on the internet.
Surveillance cameras on the expressway captured the truck’s movement at about 10:30 p.m. When relevant authorities tried to intervene, the truck was already off the expressway.
This behavior is especially dangerous, said Nguyen Thi Hoai Phuong, vice director of the Vietnam Expressway Services Engineering JSC, which manages the expressway connecting HCMC and the nearby Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provinces.
Han said he recently moved to HCMC and did not know the road well.
On Sunday, three teenage boys were captured on a video riding bicycles on the expressway, meant only for four-wheeled vehicles. They could be fined between VND400,000 and VND600,000.
Road crashes are a leading cause of death in Vietnam, killing almost one person every hour. More than 18,720 accidents occurred last year, killing 8,244 people and injuring nearly 14,800, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Walking streets expansion could mess with Saigon traffic, experts caution
Urban development experts are advising against Saigon turning a major part of its District 1 into a massive pedestrian zone.
Instead, they said, the city would be better off developing smaller walking zones in different areas.
The city’s Department of Architecture and Planning submitted a proposal to the administration late last month, based on the city’s approved urbanization master plan.
Under the proposal, Le Loi Street and Nguyen Hue Street, which already has an exclusive pedestrian stretch down its middle, the Opera House park, and the Ben Thanh Market walking square will form an unbroken stretch of walking space in the downtown area with lots of attractions.
The department noted that careful landscape research and planning would be required because the Nguyen Hue – Le Loi intersection would become a key crossroad since it lies at a confluence of rapidly rising constructions, malls and other commercial establishments.
Also passing below Le Loi will be the first metro route, whose construction is ongoing. The Le Loi Street section will be handed back to the city by the Urban Railway Management next year.
But Nguyen Minh Hoa, member of the city’s Planning and Architecture Council, said that unlike Nguyen Hue Street, which is mostly home to companies and hotels, Le Loi Street has thousands of houses. Turning it into a walking street would affect daily activities of thousands of residents, he said.
Furthermore, if the pedestrian zone stretches from Nguyen Hue to Le Loi, it will attract a large amount of visitors, meaning more security guards, parking lots, public toilets, restaurants and coffee shops and “things will get more complicated,” he said.
Architect Ngo Viet Nam Son said he supported the idea of opening up more space for pedestrians, but turning Le Loi into a walking street is a move that requires careful consideration.
Nguyen Hue is shorter than Le Loi and it cuts small streets and thus the fact that it is a pedestrian street does not have much impact on traffic. Le Loi, meanwhile, is longer and cuts across two major streets, Pasteur and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, and it would be a real obstacle for traffic circulation if it turns exclusively pedestrian,” he said.
If Le Loi is used as a walking one, the city’s downtown area will be separated into two parts and vehicles that need to make U-turns will have to travel much further, Son said.
If the city does not prepare well, it could end up generating a messy problem, he added. For instance, he noted, clearing the street for a fire truck to get into the downtown zone or paving it for locals to move out in case of traffic jams would be very difficult to manage.
Vo Kim Cuong, former deputy chief architect of HCMC, said the city should give priority for traffic in the downtown area, because congestion was an everyday problem.
The city should not make a big walking zone that affects the traffic around it, he said.
Professor Hoa suggested that instead of making Le Loi a walking street, the city should stretch the existing walking space on Nguyen Hue to Dong Khoi Street and the area around the Notre Dame Cathedral.
The two walking zones would have different functions, like entertainment and food for Nguyen Hue and culture and art for the cathedral zone, he said.
A walking street should not simply a zone...

Two Saigon cops face prosecution after man dies in custody
Nguyen Dinh Nhon, 27, and Phung Tran Hoang, 25, are facing charges with using physical violence while questioning robber suspect Chau Dung Thanh at a detention center in District 11.
Under Vietnam’s Penal Code, those who resort to corporal punishment while investigating, prosecuting, adjudicating or executing judgements can be sentenced up to 12 years in jail.
On October 17, Thanh, 35, was chased by the district’s police for snatching a cell phone from a Grab driver. He hid inside an online game shop, resisted police officers and threatened to kill himself, local reports said.
After three hours, he was persuaded by his family to go out. Then, he was held in custody at the district’s detention center for questioning about the phone theft. Reports said he refused to cooperate with the police and berated them.
He also showed signs of being high on drugs.
Around 4 a.m. the next day, Thanh felt pain all over his body. He was taken to the local hospital, where he died later.
An autopsy identified pulmonary edema (fluid collection in the lungs) as the cause of death. Since the death took place just a few hours after being interrogated by the police, his family demanded an investigation into his death.
Based on camera footage from the detention center and testimonies of several people, investigators suspect the two police officers had beaten the detained man.
Thanh’s family confirmed that he was physically in good shape in the morning prior to the arrest and had only suffered minor injuries in his hands.
In the afternoon, the family had received a phone call from police, saying he was suspected of stealing property. When his family went to the game shop to persuade him to surrender, they found him normal.
Several instances of suspects dying in police custody have been reported across Vietnam in recent years.
Five policemen in the central Ninh Thuan Province last September were jailed for three to seven years for beating a male prisoner to death.
In 2016, a court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced a former traffic police officer to 12 years in prison for asking thugs to beat a traffic violator to death, following an argument.
