Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary-Tracing deers
Bhimashankar, about 275 km from Mumbai by road is a weekend getaway. At 3250-ft high and a 4.5-hour grueling trek from Khandas village – it is a test of endurance for our muscles, joints and of perseverance for our minds.
The temple on top, dedicated to Lord Shiva, dates back to 18th century. Legend is that Lord Shiva, killed Bhima, an Asura who lived there. Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is home to a variety of endangered species of flora and fauna. The Giant Indian Squirrel is a major attraction while the other species present include Panther, Sambar, Wild Boar,Chital etc. The Bhima river originates from here and joins river Krishna. Trekking during the monsoons is ideal and the most enjoyable, with endless stretches of greenery right from the base, with waterfalls and gushing streams. But it is also risky. River Bhima also known as Chandrabhaga River, especially at Pandharpur, as it resembles the shape of the Moon.
The Bhimashankar Temple is located in an excellent place in Sahyadri Hills and provides a wonderful view of the forts, the rivers and the hill station arround it. We can also see the dense forests around this temple and have rare species of flora and fauna.
Bhimashankar is where we can see a number of birds, animals, flowers, plants and so on. There are some places around Bhimashankar to visit. The Hanuman Lake, Nag Phani, Sakshi Vinayak, Bombay Point etc. are worth seeing.
So, whether you are a devotee or a nature lover or an adventure buff, Bhimashankar is definitely the place for you!

Trek in Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary – Swadesee Experiences
The Devrais or sacred groves of India are nature’s own banks. Banks where the currency is millions of years of evolution. Banks that are operated entirely by their stake holders – all the diverse species that call it home. Banks whose security is handled by rural communities that understand its importance. And perhaps most importantly, banks that give us infinitely more than they take. Their weakness is they are not digital and cannot be recreated once destroyed, at least not in our lifetimes.
Join one of our treks to visit Maharashtra’s Devrais. We’re about connecting with nature as much as we’re about having fun and making friends. And discovering that perhaps our villages have a lot more to teach us than we think.
Bhimashankar Forest Trip - Indian Giant Squirrel / Malabar Giant Squirrel (Rutufa indica)
The Indian giant squirrel, or Malabar giant squirrel, (Ratufa indica) is a large tree squirrel species genus Ratufa native to India. It is a large-bodied diurnal, arboreal, and herbivorous squirrel found in South Asia.
It is called 'Shekru' in Marathi and is state animal of Maharashtra.
The Ratufa indica has a conspicuous two-toned (and sometimes three-toned) color scheme. The colors involved can be creamy-beige, buff, tan, rust, brown, or even a dark seal brown The underparts and the front legs are usually cream colored, the head can be brown or beige, however there is a distinctive white spot between the ears. Adult head and body length varies around 14 inches (36 cm) and the tail length is approximately 2 ft (0.61 m). Adult weight - 2 kg.
The Indian giant squirrel is an upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests. It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6 m (20 ft). When in danger, the Ratufa indica often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing. Its main predators are the birds of prey and the leopard.
The Giant Squirrel is mostly active in the early hours of the morning and in the evening, resting in the midday. It is a shy, wary animal and not easy to discover.
