But don't let that stop you from satisfying your taste buds with loads of goodies! Stay tuned for part two!

Netherlands #12 - 10 to do things after arrival to the Netherlands
1. Rent a place and register with the gemeente
A key factor when apartment- or room-hunting in the Netherlands is that you need to be able register at that address. Being registered at a Dutch address is essential to get a BSN, open a bank account and to do other administration.
If you are looking for a room to rent you can check out this links:
Once you have your accommodation and rental contract you can visit the local town hall (gemeente) to register.
2. Get a BSN and open a bank account
Getting your social services number (BSN) and setting up a Dutch bank account are two of the first steps to establishing your new life in the Netherlands.
You need a BSN for many different reasons: to open a bank account, start a job, use the healthcare system and do your tax. You will receive your BSN when you register with your address at the town hall.
To open an account with a Dutch bank, you can either make an appointment online or visit a branch close to you. You will need your BSN, your passport or identity card, proof of address such as a rental contract, and your residence permit if you are not an EU citizen.
3. Find a cheap bike
Rule number one: don’t buy a junkie bike! You will only be perpetuating the cycle of bad karma which will inevitably come back to bite you when your stolen bike is re-stolen.
Markets are an ideal place to find legitimate and cheap used bikes.
4. Don’t forget to check out with your OV-chipkaart
This reminder is replayed like a mantra on trams and buses. If you fail to check out, the transport provider will charge you the maximum fare for your trip, which is four euros on trams and buses, and 20 euros on the national rail system.
On the positive side, the OV-chipkaart can be used on public transport in every Dutch city and on NS trains.
5. Find furniture and more at kringloopwinkels
The UK has charity store. In the Netherlands they’re called kringloopwinkels, literally recycle shops. If you need furniture, kitchen utensils, a sound system, musty retro clothing or an old typewriter… now you know where to find it!
Kringloopwinkels are usually located in outer suburbs and smaller towns, so they will may require a car or a long bike ride to reach. Visit this website to find all stores listed by region (in Dutch).
6. Save money dining at voku restraurants
Voku is an abbreviation of volkskeuken or people’s kitchen, and is the name for pop-up restaurants run by squatter collectives. If you’re a student on a tight budget, exploring your city’s squat scene will usually turn up some economic dining options.
Dutch squat communities have a tradition of offering cheap dinners for as little at 3,50 euros, usually one regular night per week.
7. Do a Dutch course
Dutch is hard. We know Dutch ain't pretty. But learning even just a little of the local language will make your time in the Netherlands easier and will help you connect more with the locals.
Once you have learnt the basics in a course, join a conversation class or group, where you can put your new language skills into practice.
It will probably take you six months just to master pronunciation, but the more you persevere the more you will be rewarded. Remember: no pain, no gain!
8. Know your rights
There is a great infrastructure in the Netherlands to help disadvantaged people in society, and when you’re trying to settle into a new culture and language that can feel like a pretty big disadvantage!
Het Juridisch Loket (The Legal Counter) offers free advice for any and every legal issue: work, living, immigration, consumer issues and police and justice.
If your landlord is charging outrageous rent and failing to fix the leaky ceiling you can contact the Huurcommissie (rent commission) to check your rental rights and maybe get a rent reduction.
If you have a complaint about public administration you can contact the Nationale Ombudsman, who runs an independent and impartial organisation to keep an eye on the government.
9. Get health insurance
If you’re in Netherlands for more than a couple of months then you will need to consider signing up for compulsory Dutch health insurance.
The Dutch health system allows you roughly three months to register for health insurance, after which you can be fined by the Zorginstituut Nederland.
10. Get over the tourist attractions ASAP
People who have never been to the Netherlands immediately associate the nation with the cheesy clichés of coffeshops, windmills and the red light district. It’s true, they’re hard to find in other parts of the world!
But such attractions are just one aspect of a very rich and diverse society and culture. Get your snooping round coffee shops and those velvet-curtained windows out of the way so you can move on to more interesting aspects of Dutch culture, such as the art world, the clubbing nightlife or festival season.
The Netherlands: Beyond Amsterdam
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | By train, bike, and boat, we visit the top Dutch sights outside of Amsterdam: from Haarlem to Rotterdam, and from Delft to the Zuiderzee. Along the way, we enjoy charming towns with fragrant cheese markets, soggy polderland, mighty dikes, and windmills both new and old. Rolling through the Netherlands and connecting with its people, you can’t help but think, “Everything’s so...Dutch!”

Utrecht, Netherlands walking tour
Utrecht is one special city in the Netherlands with a unique atmosphere created by terrace restaurants and promenades right at water level along the canals, producing a delightful ambience in a historic setting, and yet also lined with modern shops and restaurants and bars. It's this wonderful split-level setting with pedestrian streets above and down below by the canals you've got the restaurants on their terraces, really quite special. And there are many other delightful aspects to the city of Utrecht. It's the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, and it's got the oldest university, and they claim the second largest collection of historic medieval buildings, second only to Amsterdam. Standing high above it all is the tallest church tower in the country, then add to the mix typical Dutch ingredients of friendly people with a relaxed tolerant attitude, always ranked high in global indexes of happiness and quality of life – bicycles zooming by, great beer, wonderful food, and a compact pedestrian historic zone riddled with picturesque canals. This is a place you would love to visit as we will show you in this detailed travel guide.

Late Night Food Guide to Amsterdam
Abel hits the streets of Amsterdam for the best late night food in this Dutch city. He starts the night off at an Amsterdam institution, Cafe Schiller in Rembrandt Square, for the fried balls of dough and meat known as bitterballen, or “brown gold,” before biking over to Roopram Roti, a Surinamese restaurant that serves the city’s best roti.
After a few more drinks, Abel heads to FEBO, a vending-machine restaurant that serves burgers and sandwiches, and talks to a few Amsterdam locals. He ends the night at Metsut 2 for kapsalon, a dish invited in the Netherlands that's made up of French fries topped with shawarma.

Amsterdam Food - Food Hall Foodhallen
There is a lot of Amsterdam Food to discover. The first food hall in Amsterdam, De Foodhallen has opened in the recently renovated De Hallen in Oud West, Amsterdam. If you like street food then the Amsterdam Food Hall is the place to be. Multiple kiosks serve a large variety of street / finger food, including Friska (healthy and new), Viêt View, Caulils Kaas, Pink Flamingo Pizza. De Foodhallen is inspired by ‘indoor food markets’ from different metropolitan cities.

DUTCH STREET FOOD TOUR Haarlem, the Netherlands
A quick day trip from Amsterdam is Haarlem! Did you know that Harlem, NY was named after Haarlem in the Netherlands? It's THAT important! And New York used to be New Amsterdam...is your mind blown yet?! In less than a 1/2 hour from Amsterdam, you are in a lovely Dutch town that all us Amsterdammers even love to visit...Haarlem. Where the people are friendly, it's not crowded, and it's still the traditional incredible Dutch architecture you know and love. Take a Dutch street food tour in a quieter setting than you can get in Amsterdam while getting delicious and quality food that completely represents what is typically eaten here. My favorite bite? Apple pie! What would be your favorite thing to try?
