City Cycling - Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This video was filmed during my trip through the Netherlands. Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle friendly major cities in the entire world, and it was a real pleasure being able to ride a bike through it and share it in this video!
As always, I have added in a digital speedometer and heart rate monitor, and included voice commentary to help keep the video interesting. If you like this format of video, please also check out the many videos that I have posted riding in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In this video I used my new Contour Roam 2 camera to shoot the action footage. I recorded the audio with my Panasonic voice recorder. I tracked the speed and heart rate using my Garmin eTrex 30 GPS, and wrote a basic program in Turing to display the numbers on the screen.
Special thanks to my Dad for being the navigator and follow vehicle for this ride! I definitely couldn't have done it without him leading the way!
I hope you enjoy this video. Please leave comments and SUBSCRIBE!
Thanks for watching!
How Amsterdam Became a Bicycle Paradise
The Dutch capital Amsterdam is widely known for being bike-friendly. But it wasn’t always a model cycling city. Public outrage at rising traffic casualties in the Seventies caused city planners to rethink their approach to urban design.

Why Does Amsterdam Have So Many Bikes?
It was so awesome to create this video to explain why there are so many bikes in this iconic city. But having this many bikes has a ripple effect throughout the Netherlands that makes it what it is today.

Cycling in Amsterdam City
EXPLORING historic AMSTERDAM (The Netherlands, Holland)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a walking tour of Amsterdam, this fascinating European (and very unique) capital in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is the capital and most populous municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands, although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague.
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.

Are there really too many bikes in Amsterdam?
In June, the New York Times published a story headlined The Dutch Prize Their Pedal Power, But a Sea of Bikes Swamps Their Capital that instigated much debate (over 365 reader comments in one day) and a torrent of emails to the editor. The Times followed up by seeking a dialogue with its readers about the supposed swamping of Amsterdam by bicycles. Then came all the echoes of the Times narrative in other media.
So, are there really too many bikes in Amsterdam? On a recent trip to the Netherlands, I got to experience this sea of bikes first-hand, and I saw no true problems other than pockets of less-than-ideal bike parking accommodations.
Over 30 percent of trips in Amsterdam are done by bike, and many locals have decried the Times article as hyperbole. See what some of them have to say about the situation in this Streetfilm.

Bike Culture in Amsterdam - More Bikes than I have seen Anywhere
You'd like to think Amsterdam is all about Sex, well that's what I thought, until I saw this.
Bikes everywhere, they have a serious bike culture, Dutch like to have a healthy life style apparently.
In the UK Cambridge is a city with a lot of bikes and I had thought that was a lot, but nothing comes close to Amsterdam. This city is full of bikes, whether parked or moving, the bikes are everywhere and the public facilities ensure that the bikes are catered for, whether it is provided such huge spaces for their parking or a separate riding lane. The bikes can go in a separate lane which appears to be a 2 wheeler lane as only bikes and scooters use that lane.
I must say, I was positively surprised and thoroughly impressed, we need to turn more cities green in such a way - this my policy making side coming out, I probably won't be biking myself :) Contradictions, I'm afraid.
Loved it though!
