City Cycling - Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This video was filmed during my trip through the Netherlands. Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle friendly major cities in the entire world, and it was a real pleasure being able to ride a bike through it and share it in this video!
As always, I have added in a digital speedometer and heart rate monitor, and included voice commentary to help keep the video interesting. If you like this format of video, please also check out the many videos that I have posted riding in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In this video I used my new Contour Roam 2 camera to shoot the action footage. I recorded the audio with my Panasonic voice recorder. I tracked the speed and heart rate using my Garmin eTrex 30 GPS, and wrote a basic program in Turing to display the numbers on the screen.
Special thanks to my Dad for being the navigator and follow vehicle for this ride! I definitely couldn't have done it without him leading the way!
I hope you enjoy this video. Please leave comments and SUBSCRIBE!
Thanks for watching!
How Amsterdam Became a Bicycle Paradise
The Dutch capital Amsterdam is widely known for being bike-friendly. But it wasn’t always a model cycling city. Public outrage at rising traffic casualties in the Seventies caused city planners to rethink their approach to urban design.

Why Does Amsterdam Have So Many Bikes?
It was so awesome to create this video to explain why there are so many bikes in this iconic city. But having this many bikes has a ripple effect throughout the Netherlands that makes it what it is today.

Urban Arrow arranged for a bike infrastructure tour while we were in town for their International Dealer Conference. I wanted to share this tour as I think it provides some really great explanations of what infrastructure in Amsterdam exists and how it works.

EXPLORING historic AMSTERDAM (The Netherlands, Holland)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a walking tour of Amsterdam, this fascinating European (and very unique) capital in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is the capital and most populous municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands, although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague.
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.

Amsterdam, a city built for bikes
Hire a bike in Amsterdam to make the most of the city. Not only is cycling in Amsterdam cheap and accessible, it’s safe too. The city is equipped with a whopping 400 kilometres of cycle paths – that’s farther than the distance from Amsterdam to London. Needless to say, it’s a breeze to hop on a bike to traverse the city’s symbolic cobbled streets, attractions and canals. There’s simply so much to do and see on a bike in Amsterdam, but you have to get your hands on one first. Luckily, Amsterdam has you covered with its impressive selection of bike hire shops and locations.
Weesp is a small historic town of about 18,000 inhabitants, located in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands, south-east of Amsterdam, on the river Vecht. It was once fortified, and several of the bastions, moats and forts still survive. In the Amsterdam region, Weesp is the nearest small town that has survived as an independent entity. It is only 3 km from the end of the Amsterdam metro, but the wide Amsterdam-Rhine Canal keeps it geographically separate. Weesp is a rail junction, and very easily accessible. The town is surrounded by open grassland.

BIKE ADVENTURE IN AMSTERDAM
We fly to Amsterdam for our first travel experience outside of Germany. The city is beautiful and alive when we arrive, and we rent bikes to ride around the city. We get familiar with our surroundings for the rest of the day and call it an early night after meeting up with our couch surfing host.
- How we chose to stay in Amsterdam.
- How we chose to get around the city.
Join me on my adventure for my first time being in Europe, and my first time vlogging! I will be living in Stuttgart, Germany for the summer - longer if I can successfully obtain a visa. During this time I will be exploring as much of Germany and the rest of Europe as I can.

Shopping by bike is very common in the Netherlands. With a population that is used to cycling. Sit-up bikes that can carry goods and shops with good bike parking opportunities (or shopping areas with even better bike parking possibilities) it is no wonder that people go shopping by bike!
