Black Point Wildlife Drive in the MINWR
Black Point Wildlife Drive in the MINWR
Short tour of Black Point Wildlife Drive
Black Point Wildlife Drive is a great place for birding, especially in the fall. It is part of the Merrit Island National Wildlife Refuge and is located east of Titusville, Florida. Kennedy Space Center, where space shuttles are launched, is right here and provides birdwatching of a different kind.

The Merritt Island Adventure
This video is a documentary of the lives of the homesteaders living on Merritt Island in Florida in the area that is now owned by NASA operating the Kennedy Space Center and also managed as Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. NASA used eminent domain to acquire the property in the late 1950's - 60's. Here are the stories of how people lived very primitively on the land and what happened when they were forced to move. For this film, they were brought back to the homestead, back to the very foundations where they still existed. Some early settlers are able to visit their home sites where the land is open to the public; however, some have never had access to their home site because it lies within the security area of Kennedy Space Center. Many residents are proud that their land went to support a successful space program that sent man to the moon! Although residents were forced to move, they are glad the land is protected as a National Wildlife Refuge and not developed like so much of the Florida coastline. The refuge remains pristine and very similar to how they remembered growing up there.
A Tour of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge - Florida Real Estate
We’ve got a special video for you today. I recently went out to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and spent the day exploring the incredible area. As you’ll see, there’s nothing quite like being out in the salt marshes here at sunset. The variety of wildlife we saw was unbelievable, and we can’t wait to share it with you. To take a look at our trip in better detail, watch our latest video.

My family and I are great wildlife enthusiasts and whenever we come to Florida we always try to visit a State Park as we are fascinated by the native wildlife. This year we visited Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, in Titusville, which is a stunning 140,000 acres of coastal dunes, saltwater estuaries, marshes and freshwater impoundments. These wide varieties of habitats are home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals and can be enjoyed by visitors through many recreational opportunities such as bird and wildlife observation, a wildlife drive and a manatee observation deck.
The best place to see wildlife is along the Black Point Wildlife Drive. It's a 7-mile, one-way drive that takes about 40 minutes and feels like you are on an African Safari! One to two hours after sunrise and one to two hours before sunset are the best times to view wildlife actively feeding. We arrived at about 4.30pm, and as it was early February the sun began to set soon after 5.00pm, so we were treated with a magnificent sunset, breathtaking scenery and an incredible array of beautiful birds, so if you are a keen photographer, you certainly won't be disappointed!
To top that, as we left the park and drove down the road leading to the exit, we saw a large cat run across, as we got closer we then saw two smaller cats also run across. At first we thought they were some kind of small wild cats, but as there were no cars around my brother got out to have a closer look and soon realised they were actually baby Bob Cats because of their short stubby tails and striking fur patterns! How lucky was that!
Another Day At Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge
I found myself in Florida again during March so I decided to go back out the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge for another day of shooting with my Sony PXW-FS7. This video is a companion to my other Merritt Island video that I shot in February:
I have no idea what I am going to do with all this bird footage but it was certainly fun to shoot nevertheless. Maybe I need an intervention.

Dragon's Point, the southmost tip of Merritt Island
The Merritt Island Dragon or Merrit Island River Dragon was a dragon-shaped green concrete structure that stood at the southern tip of Merritt Island, known as Dragon Point, where the Indian River Lagoon splits to form the Banana River Lagoon. The dragon was built in 1971 by Florida artist Louis VanDercar and property owner Aynn Christal. In 1981, the statue was expanded for new property owner Warren McFadden, with the addition of a tail, an extended neck, two cavepeople and four hatchling dragons named Joy, Sunshine, Charity, and Freedom. The statues were located in the city of Melbourne, Florida, south of the Eau Gallie Causeway.
The dragon was created from 20 short tons (18 t) of concrete and steel, and stood 35 feet (11 m) high and 65 feet (20 m) long. Known as Annie, the dragon served as a landmark for both locals and boaters, and also as a playhouse for children. On special occasions, the dragon would breathe fire.
In August 2002, the sculpture was badly damaged, and partially collapsed into the water during a storm; vandalism was blamed for contributing to the statue's destruction. The owner and the Brevard County Commissioners were unable to agree on a rehabilitation effort; there was a plan in 2004 to reconstruct the sculpture, while in 2008, a developer planned a luxury hotel and spa on the Dragon Point site with a reconstructed dragon statue as its centerpiece, but both plans fell through.
A children's book about the dragon, River Dragon: A Real Florida Fairy Tale, was published in 2003.
Save Dragon Point, an organization dedicated to rebuilding the dragon statue, was founded in May 2012. In August, the mansion on the property where the dragon had stood was scheduled to be demolished and the property sold. Save Dragon Point changed its name to Annie and Kids Arts and Education Foundation.
In January 2015, the organization bought the property. It announced that a new dragon named Rojak will be built. According to the story of Dragon Point Rojak is Annie's fifth hatchling whom was kept hidden. In April Rojak was revealed to be built by 2017.
Birds of the Merritt island National Wildlife Refuge Florida
A sampling of wading birds, waterfowl and shorebirds on a drive through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Kennedy Space Center, Florida. There are around 300 species of birds at the wildlife refuge the most commonly seen on the wildlife drive are herons and egrets, ducks, grebes, Ospreys and Ibis - and of course alligators. For photo and video the best time is early morning with the sun rising in the east to get that nice rich light and pretty water. As the day progresses the light gets harsher. It is always a challenge to film pure white birds as automatic settings on cameras tend to lead to over exposure. In these conditions I sometimes under-expose by 2 to 3 clicks as you can see the improvement starting at 0:26 you can also experiment with white balance settings.

A Huge Raft of Ducks at a Black Point Wildlife Drive lake.
These ducks were seen in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. I believe the birds could be Lesser Scaup Ducks but I'm not positive. If you have a positive identification of these birds please let me know. Wish I had used my external shotgun mic, would hear more bird sounds with it.

For most visitors to Merritt Island NWR, the Visitor Center Boardwalk is their only on-foot taste of habitats found within the refuge, which is overlaid on Kennedy Space Center.
