Kennedy Space Center Cape Canaveral Merritt Island Florida, USA
These Pictures were taken over something like 8 visits to the center, Over the last 30 years. The John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is the United States launch site that has been used for every NASA human space flight since 1968. Although such flights are currently on hiatus, KSC continues to manage and operate unmanned rocket launch facilities for the US government's civilian space program from three pads at the adjoining Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Its Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is the fourth-largest structure in the world by volume and was the largest when completed in 1965.
Located on Merritt Island, Florida, the center is north-northwest of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean, midway between Miami and Jacksonville on Florida's Space Coast. It is 34 miles (55 km) long and roughly 6 miles (10 km) wide, covering 219 square miles (570 km2). A total of 13,100 people worked at the center as of 2011. Approximately 2,100 are employees of the federal government; the rest are contractors.

The John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is the United States launch site that has been used for every NASA human space flight since 1968. Although such flights are currently on hiatus, KSC continues to manage and operate unmanned rocket launch facilities for the U.S. government's civilian space program from three pads at the adjoining Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Its Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is the fourth-largest structure in the world by volume[2] and was the largest when completed in 1965. Since December 1968, all launch operations have been conducted from Pads A and B at Launch Complex 39 (LC-39). Both pads are on the ocean, 3 miles (5 km) east of the VAB. From 1969--1972, LC-39 was the departure point for all six Apollo manned Moon landing missions using the Saturn V, the largest and most powerful operational launch vehicle in history, and was used from 1981--2011 for all Space Shuttle launches. The Shuttle Landing Facility, located just to the north, was used for most Shuttle landings and is among the longest runways in the world. The KSC Industrial Area, where many of the center's support facilities are located, is 5 miles (8 km) south of LC-39. It includes the Headquarters Building, the Operations and Checkout Building and the Central Instrumentation Facility. KSC was also home to the Merritt Island Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network station (MILA), a key radio communications and spacecraft tracking complex. The center operates its own short-line railroad. KSC is a major central Florida tourist destination and is approximately one hour's drive from the Orlando area. The Visitor Complex offers public tours of the center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Because much of the installation is a restricted area and only nine percent of the land is developed, the site also serves as an important wildlife sanctuary; Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore are other features of the area. Center workers can encounter Bald Eagles, American alligators, wild boars, Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes, Florida panthers and Florida manatees. KSC is one of ten major NASA field centers, and has several facilities listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Kennedy Space Center was created and has evolved to meet the changing needs of America's manned space program, initially in competition with the Soviet Union. What is today KSC was authorized in 1958 during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The facility was originally known as the Launch Operations Directorate (LOD), reporting to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. President John F. Kennedy's 1961 goal of a lunar landing before 1970 led to an expansion of NASA operations from a few buildings in the Industrial Area of Cape Canaveral Missile Test Annex (later Cape Canaveral Air Force Station), notably Hangar S, to Merritt Island. NASA began land acquisition in 1962, buying title to 131 square miles (340 km2) and negotiating with the state of Florida for an additional 87 square miles (230 km2). The major buildings in KSC's Industrial Area were designed by architect Charles Luckman. On July 1, 1962, the site was renamed the Launch Operations Center, achieving equal status with other NASA centers; and on November 29, 1963, the facility received its current name by Executive Order 11129 following Kennedy's death. Missions to the Moon required the large three-stage Saturn V rocket (111 m high and 10 m in diameter). At KSC, Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) was built on Merritt Island to accommodate the new rocket. Construction of the $800 million project began in November 1962. LC-39 pads A and B were completed by October 1965 (a planned Pad C was canceled), the VAB was completed in June 1965, and the infrastructure by late 1966.

MILA, Mission Complete: Tracking station of Cape Canaveral (NASA)
The end of MILA, MILA is a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Tracking Station located on Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Merritt Island Florida. The name MILA is an acronym derived from the Merritt Island Launch Annex to Cape Canaveral, which was the previous name of the area that eventually became Kennedy Space Center.
Space shuttle visits Miracle game at Brevard County
As space fans know, NASA's space shuttle recently had to land in California thanks to the perpetual thunderstorms we get here in the Sunshine State. But if the shuttle is in California, and the launchpad is in Florida ... well, here's your answer. Just mere hours before the Manatees-Miracle game at Space Coast Stadium, we were paid a visit by one rather unusual bird.
Note the aerodynamic cone that covers the shuttle's rocket exhausts, and the additional vertical stabilizers added to the heavily modified 747's tail.
Space Mirror Memorial - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Space Mirror Memorial, also known as the Astronaut Memorial, is a memorial on the grounds of the John F. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Merritt Island, Florida. It is maintained by the Astronauts Memorial Foundation, whose offices are located in the NASA Center for Space Education next door to the Visitor Complex. The memorial was dedicated in 1991 to remember the lives of the men and women who have died in the various space programs of the United States, particularly those of NASA. The Space Mirror Memorial has been designated a National Memorial by the U.S. Congress.
In addition to 20 NASA career astronauts, the memorial includes the names of a U.S. Air Force X-15 test pilot, a U.S. Air Force officer who died while training for a then-classified military space program, a civilian spaceflight participant who died in the Challenger disaster, and an Israeli astronaut who was killed during the Columbia disaster.
The primary feature of the memorial is the Space Mirror, a large area of polished black granite, divided into 90 smaller panels. The names of the 24 astronauts who have died are scattered over the mirror, with names of astronauts who died in the same incident grouped on the same panel, or pairs of adjacent panels. The names are cut completely through the surface, exposing a translucent backing, and filled with translucent acrylic, which is then backlit with a combination of reflected sunlight and floodlights, causing the names to glow, and appear to float in a reflection of the sky.

Atlantis space shuttle launch. 5-14-10
My school (Merritt Island High School) goes outside every time a shuttle or rocket is launched. Brevard county supports NASA and supports the Constellation program. Please support us and Persuade Obama to bring back the program, A massive community will have nothing else if NASA doesn't have a space program.
Kennedy Space Center & Cape Canaveral Seashore 1976/1977
1970s Florida -- was still an intriguing and attractive destination for the rest of the US (especially in winter time). Here we are visiting NASA's Rocket Garden on a chilly clear day many years ago. And nearby Canaveral National Seashore.
Shot on 8mm film by my father. Mostly unedited (music added). Transferred and color graded by me (the toddler in the picture) years later.
Nature Meets Technology at Kennedy Space Center
Nature coexists with state-of-the-art technology at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, which shares boundaries with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Here, marshes and scrub land are broken only by towering launch structures, and birds share the skies with rockets. The stories of the wildlife refuge and the space program have been linked since the refuge was established in 1963. Today, these 140,000 acres provide a safe haven for hundreds of species of wildlife -- and serve as a launch pad for voyages to Earth orbit and beyond.
Media Preview of Space Shuttle Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex 6-25-13
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex invited the media to tour the Space Shuttle Atlantis attraction before it Grand Opening on June 29, 2013. Andrea Farmer, Public Relations Manager gave us a guided tour of the new facility. She provided some background information, shuttle facts and more during the tour. Note that the tour was a few days before the opening and some of the exhibits were not ready yet. Atlantis has to be seen in person to fully appreciate, video and photos cannot capture just how close you get to a real space shuttle. It looks so much smaller on TV.
