Rochester, New York: Downtown Driving Tour (August, 2019)
A fairly extensive driving tour through the downtown core of Rochester, New York. The route starts northbound on St. Paul Street. We dip into High Falls near the end and circle the iconic Kodak Tower.
Located at the junction of the Genesee River and Lake Ontario, Rochester was founded in 1788. It was first incorporated as the village of Rochesterville in 1817. It was incorporated as a city in 1834.
The population is now just over 200,000 with a metro population of over 1 million. The city population has been shrinking since the 1950's when it topped out at over 330,000.
Rochester is 74 miles east of Buffalo, 87 miles west of Syracuse and 333 miles northwest of New York City.
The highest buildings seen in the video are:
Xerox Tower (1968) 443 feet
Legacy Tower (1995) 401 feet
The Metropolitan (1973) 392 feet
Kodak Tower (1914) 360 feet
First Federal Plaza (1976) 309 feet
Five Star Bank Plaza (1970) 284 feet
Hyatt Regency Hotel (1990) 271 feet
Times Square Building (1930) 260 feet - the 'Wings Of Progress' on top.
We end the video near the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial. This venue was opened in 1955 and was renovated in 1998. The building seats 12,428 when hosting the Rochester Americans in the AHL and the Rochester Knighthawks in the NLL. It was once home to the Rochester Royals of the NBA, a franchise that is now the Sacramento Kings.

Slaughter Passes Bill to Honor Fallen Rochester Hero
Last week, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter remembered the service and sacrifice of fallen Rochester Police Officer Daryl Pierson by passing a bill to name the East Rochester Post Office in his honor.
“I come before the House today to honor a young man who the Rochester community continues to mourn and seeks to memorialize. While securing our neighborhoods, while ensuring that our children were safe, Rochester Police Officer Daryl Pierson paid the ultimate price,” said Rep. Slaughter said from the House floor. “The bill before us would rename the United States Post Office in Daryl’s hometown community of East Rochester after him. I cannot think of a better tribute to honor his service.”
This bill marked a critical step forward in naming the post office the Officer Daryl R. Pierson Memorial Post Office Building. Officer Pierson was killed in the line of duty on September 3, 2014 while pursuing a suspect on foot following a traffic stop. He was the first Rochester Police Department (RPD) officer killed by gunfire in the line of duty since 1959.
Officer Pierson was a member of Rochester Police Department’s Tactical Unit and was recognized for his efforts to remove illegal firearms from the streets of Rochester. He received multiple awards and letters of recognition during his time on the force. In addition to being an eight year veteran of the RPD, he was also a member of the Army National Guard. Before becoming a police officer in August 2006, Officer Pierson served in Afghanistan as a member of the US Army.
Located on West Commercial Street in East Rochester, the historic post office was built in 1936 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Giuliani at Fisher commencement
Rochester, N.Y. - There will likely be protest buttons in the audience when former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani speaks at St. John Fisher's commencement May 9 at the Blue Cross Arena.
Nearly 50 professors say that Giuliani's comments claiming that President Obama doesn't love America, as well as comments about African Americans and crime go against everything St. John Fisher College stands for.
That led some professors to write a letter to the college President Donald Bain.
I hope he's not coming here to speak on those things he said. He's speaking on his leadership after 9/11 and that's what's important to me and many students, that aspect of him, said graduating student body president Christopher Genrich.
Genrich says that the letter seeking the ouster of Giuliani first landed on St. John Fisher College President Bain's desk last week.
He reached out to me and said 'hey, I would really love more student feedback on this, hear what students think,' Genrich said.
Genrich says some, but not many students agreed to oust Giuliani and college President Bain insists Giuliani will be the speaker.
Bain responded to professors with a letter of his own, stating: I understand your position and I respect it. Dissent, after all, is a healthy component of democracy and of course has a vital place in college life. I sincerely believe that robust and civil discourse adds richness to our intellectual tradition.
Stephen Brauer, one of the opposing professors, says Giuliani is more than welcome to speak on campus, but not at commencement. He also opposes giving Giuliani an honorary degree.
But for Genrich, uninviting Giuliani sends the wrong message.
One of our key statements in the Fisher creed is respecting ideas and beliefs, they might be the same as ours, they might be different, and I think no matter who comes, not everyone is going to agree with everything that has been said, Genrich said.
The 49 professors who oppose the decision said that they respect it and will still attend commencement, albeit with pins or buttons in protest.

SUMMARY
=======
Rochester () is a city on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York. With a population of 208,046 residents, Rochester is the seat of Monroe County and the third most populous city in New York state, after New York City and Buffalo. The metropolitan area has a population of just over 1 million people. It is about 73 miles (117 km) east of Buffalo and 87 miles (140 km) west of Syracuse.
Rochester was one of America's first boomtowns, initially due to the fertile Genesee River Valley, which gave rise to numerous flour mills, and then as a manufacturing hub. Several of the region's universities (notably the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology) have renowned research programs. Rochester is the site of many important inventions and innovations in consumer products. The Rochester area has been the birthplace to Kodak, Western Union, French's, Bausch & Lomb, Gleason and Xerox, which conduct extensive research and manufacturing of industrial and consumer products. Until 2010, the Rochester metropolitan area was the second-largest regional economy in New York State, after the New York City metropolitan area. Rochester's GMP has since ranked just below Buffalo, New York, while exceeding it in per-capita income. The 25th edition of the Places Rated Almanac rated Rochester as the most livable city in 2007, among 379 U.S. metropolitan areas. In 2010, Forbes rated Rochester as the third-best place to raise a family in the United States. In 2012, Kiplinger rated Rochester as the fifth-best city in the United States for families, citing low cost of living, top public schools, and a low jobless rate.Rochester is a Globa ...

One Brooklyn-- Brooklyn Supports Bringing MMA to NYS and Brooklyn
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hosted a press conference in the GEICO Atrium of Barclays Center in support of regulated, professional mixed martial arts (MMA), the fourth-most popular sport in the United States that nonetheless remains prohibited at the professional level in New York State.
A bill to authorize MMA and allow for regulation by the New York State Athletic Commission has been passed in the State Senate but needs approval in the Assembly. The other 49 states allow professional MMA, which would generate an estimated $135 million each year in the state’s economy, in addition to $5.4 million in state and local revenues, and help advance a positive athletic outlet for teenagers and young adults.
Joining Borough President Adams at Barclays Center, one of the world’s highest-grossing sports and entertainment venues, was former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion and New York native Chris Weidman as well as Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark.
