A Tribute to Veterans Day in Highland Park, Rochester NY
In the fall of 2013, Rochester local resident, horticulturist and forestry expert, Amy Priestley designed a set of four tours of the Highland Park Arboretum in celebration of this special park's 125th Anniversary. Each of the four followed a theme of discovery of science, nature and of place. The last tour on November 10th featured the newer additions to Highland Park both in land and in monuments. With the glory of past peak foliage on full display, this walk included a visit to the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This is a most special and hollowed space within all of Rochester and Monroe County. It is one of the most poignant, beautiful and informative memorials of any kind to be visited in the United States. So within the month that ends with a celebration of Thanksgiving, this event seemed especially appropriate as it served to honor Veterans Day as well.
Amy's company, Labor of Love Flower Farm, was one of several sponsors of the entire series of walks in honor of the 125th Anniversary of the Rochester and Monroe County' Park System. Each walk included a lesson on the natural history of one the nations most treasured Arboretums. The other sponsors included the Highland Park Neighborhood Association, Monroe County Parks, The Highland Park Conservancy and the City of Rochester.
This video was produced by Michael E Tomb, volunteer communications coordinator for the Highland Park Neighborhood Association and includes Amy's reading as well as pictures of the other residents and friends who came out on this windy, autumn day to walk, reflect and to pay tribute to those who serve.
Note: the video was designed in high definition so if you know how to set youtube to a better resolution, the video will be much crisper, especially on a larger screen. You will hear the wind and a little the rain in it at times, those sounds are meant as a sort of score.

SUMMARY
=======
Rochester () is a city on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York. With a population of 208,046 residents, Rochester is the seat of Monroe County and the third most populous city in New York state, after New York City and Buffalo. The metropolitan area has a population of just over 1 million people. It is about 73 miles (117 km) east of Buffalo and 87 miles (140 km) west of Syracuse.
Rochester was one of America's first boomtowns, initially due to the fertile Genesee River Valley, which gave rise to numerous flour mills, and then as a manufacturing hub. Several of the region's universities (notably the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology) have renowned research programs. Rochester is the site of many important inventions and innovations in consumer products. The Rochester area has been the birthplace to Kodak, Western Union, French's, Bausch & Lomb, Gleason and Xerox, which conduct extensive research and manufacturing of industrial and consumer products. Until 2010, the Rochester metropolitan area was the second-largest regional economy in New York State, after the New York City metropolitan area. Rochester's GMP has since ranked just below Buffalo, New York, while exceeding it in per-capita income.The 25th edition of the Places Rated Almanac rated Rochester as the most livable city in 2007, among 379 U.S. metropolitan areas. In 2010, Forbes rated Rochester as the third-best place to raise a family in the United States. In 2012, Kiplinger rated Rochester as the fifth-best city in the United States for families, citing low cost of living, top public schools, and a low jobless rate.Rochester is a Globa ...

SUMMARY
=======
Green Acre Bahá'í School is one of three leading institutions owned by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States. The name of the site has had various versions of Green Acre since before its founding in 1894 by Sarah Farmer and is a conference facility in Eliot, Maine, in the United States. It had a prolonged process of progress and challenge while run by Farmer until about 1913 when she was indisposed after converting to the Bahá'í Faith in 1900. `Abdu'l-Bahá, then head of the religion, visited there during his travels in the West in 1912. Farmer died in 1916 and thereafter it had evolved into the quintessential Bahá'í school directly inspiring Louhelen Bahá'í School and Bosch Bahá'í School, the other two of the three schools owned by the national assembly, and today serves as a leading institution of the religion in America. It hosted diverse programs of study, presenters, and been a focus for dealing with racism in the United States through being a significant venue for Race Amity Conventions (later renamed Race Unity Day meetings) and less than a century later the Black Men's Gatherings and further events.
