Wild Horses on the Outer Banks, NC
WILD HORSES -- Corolla has a population of honest-to-god real wild horses that live in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge -- and yes, you can easily get to see them cavorting on the beach -- and visitors are welcome, but must stay at least 50 ft away - they want to keep them wild - they're descended from horses brought over by the Spanish - get a tour at corollawildhorsetours.com -- Bob's does a great job!

Christmas Day camping on the Outer Banks
Taken 9-29-15 - Assateague Island National Seashore
I've lived in Florida most of my adult life. I've spent time on the beach, albeit mostly on the 'bay side' ... and maybe that's been the problem. I've always felt like the ocean was boring. However, this summer changed that. I fell in love this summer - with the ocean. I fell in love with Maine's rocky coast, with the Cape Cod Seashore and now with the waves of Assateague Island National Seashore. Our camp spot was primitive. We had no hookups to water, electric or sewer. (Not a problem since we are self-contained and can provide those items for ourselves). We do however have to shut our generator down at 10pm. It's warm enough that we slept with the windows open. We fell asleep to the sound of crickets, horses occasionally whinnying and the sound of the ocean. It was dark there at night - or it would have been except that we were blessed by a full moon. It was so bright that it actually cast shadows. These primitive places are where I feel the most at peace, the most spiritual and sometimes cause me to 'wax' poetic. Yesterday, Paul went fishing. After listening to the ocean call to me all night, I decided to take the short 10 minute walk from our campsite down to the ocean shore. It moved me to tears. I now understand the phrase 'terribly beautiful'. I stood there mesmerized as I watched wave after wind-swept wave fold in upon itself and crash into the shore. I felt small and even a bit afraid of the force of nature I was witnessing. Yet it was also thrilling, and I could not turn away. I even realized how the ocean could be compared to the sometimes depth and fury of human emotion. As I walked the beach, the tide was coming in; the waves were like tendrils grabbing at my ankles trying to pull me out to sea as they receded leaving behind marsh-mellow-y blobs of sea foam that I purposely walked through like a 6 year old through mud puddles. I was happy. I was at peace. I stayed a long time.
