Sailing to the Northern Lights
I present a 3-minute music video featuring time-lapses of the Northern Lights photographed from along the Norwegian coast in late October 2017 from the Hurtigruten ferry ship, the aptly named m/s Nordlys.
Yes, the ship is moving but that provides an additional level of motion to the time-lapses – nautical motion control sequences!
The Hurtigruten cruise line (the name means fast route) has ferry ships that make trips up and down the Norwegian coast, with daily departures from Bergen (at latitude 60° N) to Kirkenes at the top of Norway (at 71° N). At the top end of Norway you are under the auroral oval and almost always see some level of auroral activity, if skies cooperate.
This 11-day cruise was blessed with five clear nights with active auroras. I was serving as an instructor for a tour group of 30 from the U.S.-based Road Scholar tour company.
The final sequence is of the ship entering the Trollfjorden – a narrow fjord often entered in darkness under searchlight. This was a dramatic sight with the aurora dancing overhead.
Technical Info:
All exposures were about 1 to 1.3 seconds only, to minimize blurring during each exposure, shot with the Nikon D750 at ISO 6400, and with mostly the Sigma 14mm Art lens at f/1.8. One sequence is with the Rokinon 12mm full-frame fish-eye at f/2.8. Intervals were 1 to 2 seconds, providing a rapid cadence.
In assembly I applied a 4-frame blur to smooth the frame-to-frame motion. All processing with Adobe Camera Raw and assembly with the Mac app Time-Lapse from MicroProjects.ca (an app no longer available - a pity).
Music is by the Hollywood soundtrack artists AudioMachine, and is used with permission under social media licence. It is the track Above and Beyond from their album Tree of Life.

Best Place in the World to See the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a strange natural phenomenon that can only be witnessed in the most northern regions of the globe. We had the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Yellowknife Canada and watch the best aurora of the entire year so far. It was truly a magical moments that no words will ever be able to describe. This is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life.

TOP things to see on Northern Lights Cruise - Aurora Borealis
This Northern Lights cruise is rated as one of the best cruises in the world. This is the best way to see the northern lights and to enjoy the Norway coast. Hurtigruten is a shipping company that offer this amazing cruise which is a great way to explore the Arctic sky and the incredible Northern lights, the Aurora Borealis. This cruise is one of the best ways to explore the mesmerising Norwegian Coast and the world famous fjords.
There are 34 stops along the way. We visited some of the most amazing cities and towns along the Norwegian coast:
-Bergen: The cruise starts in Bergen, Norway's second biggest city after the capital, Oslo. Bergen is considered the gateway to the fjords. It boats the home of Edward Grieg, Norway’s most famous composer. The Bergen Funicular allows you to take a ride on Fløibanen cable car to the Fløyen mountain and lookout point. This gives you the best views of Bergen.
-Ålesund: We explored the Art Noveau town of Ålesund, this pretty town has an incredible lookout point. It’s a bit of a walk with over 400 stairs, but the effort is well worth it.
-Trondheim: Trondheim has an amazing gothic cathedral called the Nidaros Cathedral. There is a beautiful canal with colourful wooden houses along each edge. The canal can be traversed by crossing the beautiful Old Town Bridge.
-Tromsø: This beautiful city has an incredible Arctic Cathedral which is in an unusual triangular shape. Tromsø has a cable car or aerial tramway called Fjellheisen which takes you to Storsteinen mountain some 400 meters above sea level. This is one of the most beautiful views of Tromsø
-Arctic circle: On this cruise you cross into the article circle and spend a number of days there. We hardly saw any sun.
-Kirkenes: This is one of the northern most towns in Norway. At this stop we explored the Snow Hotel: Snowhotel Kirkenes Bjørnevatn Website: SnowhotelKirkenes.com. The Snowhotel Kirkenes has a Husky Safari which is an incredible arctic adventure and a great way to enjoy a husky dogsled.

Bifrost | Travel in Tromso, Norway

“Bifröst, that was the name, and there were kids also a little bit afraid that the aurora was dancing and stuff like she did tonight, yes because they believe it was like valchiries coming down to get their souls, like spirits coming down to get their souls. Also here by the cost of Norway some people still call the aurora the wind lights because the great grandparents believe it was the wind that was moving the aurora making it dance, nowadays we know it's not true because the weather up there where the aurora is, the aurora starts at 60 km, there are also layers between 20 and 30km, and the higher lines are flying at 12 km so but they actually believe it was the wind that was moving. Some young people today still call the aurora wind light just to preserve that ancient name of the aurora, and that was quite cool that they're doing that. I remember when i was a little kid, like 5-6 years old, my parents told me that if I waved and whistle to the aurora she will came down and get me and knock me over so. So I was like ok Mom ok Dad i went out playing with my friends and it get dark and of course the aurora came out and I just mad all screaming i was so afraid, i was so afraid.”
“This is when the magic is happening, because high above us from approximately 60 kilometers and up to five hundreds kilometers above us, those charge particles will collide in a way with different atoms of gasses we have up there, and when they do, the energy released from that collision will is released in form of light, and trillions and trillions and trillions of those collisions is what we see as the aurora actually, and that also determines the color we have in the aurora, so if we have like a green aurora lower down, and the red ones higher up that means that the charged particles are hitting are oxigen atoms that's what create the green and the red light, but if we have the purple in the bottom and the blue higher up, that means they're hitting nitrogen atoms, so that what was happening when we had the purple above us.”
