This is my trip to Bruneau Canyon Overlook in Idaho. Amazing place.
2017 Bruneau Canyon Overlook Ribbon Cutting
In June 2017, 100 people drove 24 miles southeast of the small town of Bruneau to celebrate recent improvements to the Canyon Overlook site. The overlook provides spectacular views of the Bruneau-Jarbidge Rivers Wilderness and the Bruneau Wild and Scenic River Area and now boasts an ADA accessible pathway, restroom facilities, interpretation and an improved overlook site. This wilderness represents a significant collaborative process that brought the Tribes, ranchers, BLM and environmental organizations together to protect its open spaces in what is known as the Owyhee Initiative.
A notably remote and beautiful area with breathtaking vistas, it is an important area for the Shoshone-Paiute people, who honored those gathered with a drumming ceremony. According to Idaho State Director Tim Murphy, “We are proud of these improvements and the opportunity they provide to tell the story of the Owyhee Initiative, a truly collaborative effort without which we would not be standing here taking in the views of the Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness.”
The improvements mark the completion of Phase One; Phase two will include additional ADA accessible trails and a second overlook site.

Bruneau Canyon Flyover
Hidden within a vast high desert plateau are deep canyons carved by the Owyhee, Bruneau and Jarbidge Rivers in a remote area of southwestern Idaho. Nearly 40 miles of Bruneau River's 50-mile total length are designated as wild. Volcanic caves, canyons and spire-like hoo-doos tower hundreds of feet above whitewater rafters in this unique environment of unsurpassed solitude and unique beauty. In early spring, this area brightens up with beautiful desert flowers contrasted sharply against the dark volcanic rock. The sagebrush plateaus of the Owyhee Uplands provides habitat for over 200 species of wildlife. Soaring eagles and hawks can often be seen flying over the skylines and nesting along the cliff faces here. The ancestors of the Shoshone-Paiute and Shoshone-Bannock people have used these canyonlands for thousands of years for shelter, weaponry, fish and game and water. Bruneau Sand Dunes - Bruneau, Idaho
This was our first visit to the Bruneau Sand Dunes. The sand dunes are located in Bruneau, Idaho which is around 75 minutes from Boise. Not a bad drive out there from Boise but it was extremely windy when we got there so I did mute the audio due to that. Hope you enjoy! We had a great time at Bruneau Sand Dunes. We enjoyed our first trip so much, we booked a second visit! This video is a smash up of those two trips to the dunes. We visited in late March (2019) and loved it so much that we returned in early April (2019) with our good friends the Thayer's. There is a lot to do at Bruneau Sand Dunes including; kayaking, hiking, astronomy, horseback riding (bring your own mount), bird watching, camping and sandboarding. It is a short departure from Interstate 84 and well worth your time even for a day trip.
What you won't see at the Dunes is... motorized Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's). They are not allowed on the sand. This is the good and the bad of Bruneau, depending on your preferences. If you like to enjoy the sand without having to worry about the noise and hazards associated with fast moving motorized vehicles - this place is for you. If you own OHV's and like to go fast on the sand - you need to check out another place.

A little back story:
I (Ben Lemenager) had started this project over 2 years ago for a documentary class I was taking, and while the originally pitched idea was not available to shoot at the time, this was a great exercise on remote shooting in the backcountry. The footage was shot in April of 2015, and I took about a year to edit it into a draft that sat about an hour long. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to story, and I didn't know how to part from all of the hard shots I captured and had fallen in love with. It took a better part of a year to let it continue to sit in the edit drive until enough projects had piled up that I needed to start clearing out projects. Finally, this project was back in my radar, and after the time apart from watching and editing it, I realized I could easily chop away shots that previously I held on to. This is a tough decision for someone who must not only direct, but film, and then edit their own work. Never the less, I present to you, the last draft of Hells Canyon, as a never ending project in revision. I had an amazing week filming this, and I hope the fun and enjoyment comes through in the edit!
Bruneau Canyon
This spectacular desert gorge on the Bruneau River is 1300 feet wide, 800 feet deep and 60 miles long with one accessible overlook from which to view the canyon. Bighorn sheep and antelope can be seen in the area. Float trips on the Bruneau River can be enjoyed for a short period in early spring.

We are in the middle of the desert, driving to see Bruneau canyon. All around us, we see nothing but flat land, snow capped mountains 30 miles away and sage brush.
We cross a small rise. I jam on the brakes. My wife screams, because 100 feet in front of us is a fence and an 800 foot drop to the canyon floor.

There are two trails that go down the canyon wall and up the other side, this is the one most visible. Care to take the hike? If so, watch out for rattlesnakes.

After the Bruneau Sand Dunes, we took a 16 mile trip on gravel road and through a missle range to see the Bruneau Overlook and the trip was worth it. This is like an Idaho secret - Idaho's Grand Canyon! This was beautiful... actually, in the spring, I guess the rapids here are world class.
