In his teaching on 21 May in Elista, Russia, Rinpoche started out by quoting Lama Tsong Khapa and emphasising the preciousness of this human rebirth where we met the Dharma. Rinpoche strongly advised to read the LamRim, ideally Lamrim Chenmo which is deep like the ocean, or Pabongka Liberation in the palm of your hand if too difficult otherwise. Rinpoche then says, best to make strong effort to meet His Holiness Dalai Lama and receive teachings from him. He recalls that the Buddha once made a prediction about a Bodhisattva who never closes his eyes and would come to benefit especially Tibet and he tells the story when he heard His Holiness saying Oh yes, I was with Buddha at that time. Then Rinpoche explains about ignorance as the root of all suffering and realising emptiness as the cure to eliminate all suffering from the root and explains the difference between gross and subtle defilements. Then Rinpoche gives examples of the Buddha’s omniscience to show that the Buddha is the perfect guide. And this is why it is best to follow His Holiness Dalai Lama, who is a Buddha. That we cannot recognise him as such is due to our defilements. It is very important to look at our gurus as Buddhas and such to purify these obscurations. With perfect guru devotion you become like dough in the hands of the guru and he can lead you to enlightenment quickly, like Marpa did with Milarepa.

Ivolginsk Datsan
Ivolginsk Datsan, the center of Buddhism in Russia, was the only functioning Buddhist temple tolerated by the Soviet government. The 14th Dalai Lama initiated construction of the new school for monks and visited the monastery four times. At present, there are about 30 monks and 100 students.
Built in 1946, the Datsan was the residence, until 1995, of Bandido Khambo Lama (the leader of the Buddhists in Russia). The main building of the Datsan was built and consecrated in 1972.
