Vlog #19 Buffalo Lake NWR
This vlog describes our visit to Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Buffalo Lake is no longer a year-round lake and seems to only have some water in it part of the year. There was no water when we were there. It is also supposed to be a great place for birders as this NWR is located on a major migratory route. While we were there, there were some birds, but I think the lack of water deterred some birds from hanging around as in other years. Rain here has been scarce. As of this writing, this part of Texas has not seen any rain in almost 6 months.

SUMMARY
=======
Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in Randall County in the Texas Panhandle. Its shortgrass prairies spill into marshes, woodlands, riparian habitat, croplands, and water-carved canyon walls that together form 7,664 acres (31.02 km2) of homes for migratory and year-round wildlife. The area forms a habitat for black-tailed prairie dogs and burrowing owls, among many other species. Some 175 acres (0.71 km2) of the refuge carries the designation of National Natural Landmark.Buffalo Lake NWR lies within a canyon carved by Tierra Blanca Creek, an ephemeral stream that stretches across northern portions of the Llano Estacado. The discharge of this stream is highly variable, and it is not unusual for the creek to dry out completely. At the same time, as the sole creek bed within a large drainage basin in a region prone to frequent and intense thunderstorms, it often suffers the destructive effects of flash floods. A large flood-control structure, called Umbarger Dam, was constructed to impound the waters of Tierra Blanca Creek and form Buffalo Lake within the boundaries of the wildlife refuge. The ponded waters of this shallow lake can provide key roosting habitat for migrating birds.

Watching Elk and Buffalo AKA Bison at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge
During Winter and early Spring, we like to take short day trips occasionally. In the month of March, we took a little drive to visit Maxwell Wildlife Refuge. The main attraction at Maxwell are the herds of Bison and Elk. We picked a great day for it, because the buffalo, or American Bison, were literally right on the road. And we got lucky and say a heard of Elk crossing the road.

We live in the state of Kansas, so most of the nature that will appear in my videos will be things we see in our state. Sometimes though, we might visit other states, and when we do, we will do our best to try to do videos of nature wherever we are.

Fort Peck Bison Restoration (2014)
In November 2014, the tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation received a second installment of genetically pure Yellowstone bison from Ted Turner's Montana ranch. Turner had been the caretaker of the bison for several years. The move to Fort Peck, which was supported by numerous conservation organizations, is intended to augment the genetically pure herd that the tribes established in 2012.

Palo Duro Fly In 2016. Wayside, Texas
Wow! This is a short video of the Palo Duro Canyon Texas Fly-In held in Wayside Texas by the (B.A.R.F) Club. (Bay Area Recreational Flyers). Thanks to the club we were able to camp with them along the rim of the Canyon, the second largest Canyon in the USA, other then the Grand Canyon and tag along with them through four states flying in some of the most beautiful country you have ever seen. Unfortunately mother nature didn't quite corporate with us. The winds were way to high to fly safely as you can see in the video so we left Texas for New Mexico, then onto Arizona and then into Utah. Had some of the best times ever, meeting some of the club members and flying with them in all the different areas and can't leave out the eating, and I'm talking about EATING. These people know they can cook up some good grub.
My bride and I would like to say special thanks to everyone in the group for letting us tag along for such a memorable trip of a life time.
