The Cable Car Museum is a free museum in the Nob Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Located at 1201 Mason Street, it contains historical and explanatory exhibits on the San Francisco cable car system, which can itself be regarded as a working museum.
The museum contains several examples of old cable cars, together with smaller exhibits and a gift shop. The cable cars displayed include:
Sutter Street Railway - grip car 46 and trailer 54 dating from the 1870s
Clay Street Hill Railroad - grip car 8, the only surviving car from the first cable car company
The museum is part of the complex that also houses the cable car power house, which drives the cables, and the car depot (barn). The car depot is not open to the public, but two overlook galleries allow the visitor to view the power house, and to descend below the junction of Washington and Mason streets in order to view the large cavern where the haulage cables are routed via large sheaves out to the street.
The museum was established in 1974, and is run by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum. It is entered from an entrance at Washington and Mason and is open from 10 AM to 6 PM between April 1 and September 30 and from 10 AM to 5 PM between October 1 and March 31, apart from some public holidays. The museum main level is wheelchair accessible via a separate entrance.
The admission to the museum is free.

How It Works: Powerhouse/Car Barn Visit, Cable Car Controls, Buying Tickets
In celebration of National Cable Car Day (Jan 17th), this ode to the San Francisco Cable Car system is a behind the scenes look at what makes the cable cars run! I show you how to buy tickets, how the cars actually operate (look closely next time you ride one and see if you can catch what the gripman is doing) and stop by the powerhouse where the under street cable is powered and the car barn above it where the cars not in service are housed.

FULL CABLE CAR RIDE & Museum Experience - San Francisco
On this day (December 2018), I experienced San Francisco cable car system which is a historic symbol recognized around the globe and offer real working transportation up the steep hills of the Bay Area. The Cable Cars start at 6am and continue until 12 midnight (Time subject to change). Traveling from Union Square to the crest of Nob Hill; the cable cars offer an existing way to move around San Francisco. Taking a ride is an unforgettable experience when visiting San Francisco, California. Although, individuals who might dismiss cable cars as a tourist attraction, some will say it’s a must to do ones in their life time. The Cable Cars is $7.00 to ride one way (Price subject to change). There are three different Cable Car routes to choose from within the city. The two main lines are Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason. These are the two lines most individuals ride because of major steep hills and those classic city views. The other San Francisco Cable Car route is the California-Van Ness line, which starts at California and Market and continues on until Van Ness. If you have never ridden a San Francisco cable car before then it can seem kind of confusing to navigate but it’s actually pretty straightforward (Videos out there). One thing I would suggest if you want to avoid the long line. I found out you can walk a few blocks and get the car at the next stop. The downside to this is that the car will be almost full and you will most likely have to hang on to the side of the car to ride; which is what I wanted. The upside is that the wait is significantly shorter. All-in-all, great experience.

Inside look at the San Francisco Cable Car garage
We are in the Cable Car garage off of Jackson Street, where we get a rare behind-the-scenes look at the big California Street double ended cars and the smaller Powell and Mason/Powell and Hyde single ended cars. This is where all of the repairs happen when the cars are not being used. There is an entrance off of Jackson Street, which leads to the turntable which can be seen inside. From there, a car can be led onto an open pit track or onto a storage track, or it can be led to the ready track, which lets the next cable car head out of the garage to go in service. We also see some of the other work equipment, such as the big rescue truck and other vehicles. For anyone who is wondering, I asked permission to be here, and was escorted by one of the bosses in the garage. Enjoy the view of this behind-the-scenes look.
