Ep2: Carmo Convent: Witness of the Earthquake 1755 in Lisbon (Portugal)
Carmo Convent (Convento do Carmo) is one of the oldest witnesses of the big earthquake of 1755 in Lisbon, Portugal. On Carmo Square (Largo do Carmo), there's so much more to see besides the ruins of what was once the biggest church in the city, like the Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa), or a room rented by Fernando Pessoa right there on number 18, so i went to discover what's around these magical places.

Lisbon: Carmo Convent, September 5 - 11, 2017
The church that was part of this convent was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 - and the ruins remain as they were. It's a striking site, above the city center in the Barrio Alto.

Completed in the 15th century, this large convent with an ornate interior is a burial site of several members of the Portuguese royal family. Even though ruined during the 1755 earthquake, you can still walk through the remnants of this once largest church in Lisbon. Nowadays, the former main altar of the church houses a small archaeological museum in which you can explore various historical artefacts, including Gothic tombs, statues and mainly Moorish azulejos. Azulejos are traditional Spanish and Portuguese coloured ceramic tiles that were used to decorate interiors. Carmo Convent is located only a short walk from Santa Justa Lift.

Amazing show of lights and sounds in Carmo Convent.
In 1389 the convent of Our Lady of Carmen was founded in Lisbon.
In 1755, during the great earthquake, followed by a fire, the famous Carmelite temple is turned into ruins.
In 1834 several reconstruction attempts were completely frustrated when the liberals dissolved religious orders and all the catholic temples became government property.
Since 1864 an archaeological museum is exhibited among its ruins.
