Napoli - Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino) - Naples, New Castle (Angevin Keep)

Napoli - Castel Nuovo, chiamato anche Maschio Angioino o Mastio Angioino, è uno storico castello medievale e rinascimentale, nonché uno dei simboli della città. La costruzione del suo nucleo antico oggi in parte riemerso in seguito ad interventi di restauro ed esplorazione archeologica si deve all'iniziativa di Carlo I d’Angiò, che nel 1266, sconfitti gli Svevi, salì al trono di Sicilia e stabilì il trasferimento della capitale da Palermo alla città partenopea. La presenza di una monarchia esterna aveva impostato l'urbanistica di Napoli intorno al centro del potere regale, costituendo un polo urbanistico alternativo, formato dal porto e dai due principali castelli ad esso adiacenti, Castel Capuano e Castel dell'Ovo. Tale rapporto tra corte regale e urbanistica cittadina si era manifestato già con Federico II, che nel XIII secolo, nello statuto svevo aveva concentrato le maggiori attenzioni sui castelli trascurando affatto le mura cittadine. Ai due castelli esistenti gli Angioini aggiunsero il principale, Castel Nuovo (Chastiau neuf), che fu non solo fortificazione ma soprattutto la loro grandiosa reggia.
Il castello domina la scenografica piazza Municipio ed è sede della Società napoletana di storia patria e del Comitato di Napoli dell'Istituto per la storia del Risorgimento italiano, ospitato nei locali della SNSP. Nel complesso è situato anche il museo civico, cui appartengono la cappella palatina e i percorsi museali del primo e secondo piano. La Fondazione Valenzi vi ha la sua sede di rappresentanza, inaugurata il 15 novembre 2009 dall'allora presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano ed altre autorità, nell'ambito della celebrazione dei cento anni dalla nascita di Maurizio Valenzi. Il Castel Nuovo è il primo monumento partenopeo in cui ci si imbatte arrivando a Napoli dal mare.

Castel Nuovo, often called Maschio Angioino, is a medieval castle located in front of Piazza Municipio and the city hall in central Naples, Italy. Its scenic location and imposing size makes the castle, first erected in 1279, one of the main architectural landmarks of the city.

Before the accession of Charles I of Naples (Charles of Anjou) to the throne in 1266, the capital of the Kingdom of Naples was Palermo. There was a royal residence in Naples, at the Castel Capuano. However, when the capital was moved to Naples, Charles ordered a new castle, not far from the sea, built to house the court. Works, directed by French architects, began in 1279 and were completed three years later.

Due to the War of the Sicilian Vespers, the new fortress remained uninhabited until 1285, when Charles died and was succeeded by his son, Charles II. Castel Nuovo soon became the nucleus of the historical center of the city, and was often the site of famous events. For example, on December 13, 1294, Pope Celestine V resigned as pope in a hall of the castle. Eleven days later, Boniface VIII was elected pope here by the cardinal collegium and immediately moved to Rome to avoid the Angevin authority.

Under king Robert (reigned from 1309), the castle was enlarged and embellished, becoming a centre of patronage of art. In 1347 Castel Nuovo was sacked by the army of Louis I of Hungary, and had to be heavily restored after the return of queen Joanna I. The new works permitted the queen to resist the Hungarian siege during Louis' second expedition. The castle was besieged numerous times in the following years, and was the official residence of King Ladislaus from 1399. It decayed under his sister Joanna II.

Under the Aragonese dynasty, begun by Alfonso V in 1442, the fortress was updated to resist the new artillery. A famous triumphal arch, designed by Francesco Laurana, was added to the main gate to celebrate Alfonso's entrance in Naples. The decoration was executed by the sculptors Pere Johan and Guillem Sagrera, called by Alfonso from Catalonia.

In a hall of the castle the famous Barons conspiracy against King Ferdinand I, Alfonso's son, occurred. The King had invited the barons for a feast; but, at a certain point, he had the garrison close all the hall's doors and all the barons were arrested and later executed. The Barons' Hall was the seat of the Council of the commune of Naples until 2006.

After the fierce sack of Naples by Charles VIII of France's soldiers in 1494, the Kingdom was annexed by Spain, and the castle was reduced from residence to an important military fortress. It was the temporary residence of the Spanish kings during their visits in the city, such as that of Charles V in 1535. The castle was again used as a residence by Charles III and later on by Duke Stefano Di Conza. The last restoration of Castel Nuovo occurred in 1823.

The imposing single-sided white marble triumphal arch, built in 1470, commemorates Alfonso of Aragon's entry to Naples in 1443. It stands between two western Towers of the Angevin castle. The overall design had been attributed to Pietro di Martina, a Milanese architect, or, according to Vasari, to Giuliano da Maiano. Modern authors attribute the design to Francesco Laurana.

Via dei Tribunali is a street in the old historic center of Naples, Italy. It was the main decumanus or Decumanus Maggiore — that is, the main east-west street—of the ancient Greek and then Roman city of Neapolis, paralleled to the south by the lower decumanus (Decumano Inferiore, now called Spaccanapoli) and to the north by the upper decumanus (Decumano Superiore) (now via Anticaglia and Via della Sapienza). The three decumani were (and still are) intersected by numerous north-south cross-streets called cardini, together forming the grid of the ancient city. The modern streets/alleys that overlie and follow the ancient grid of these ancient streets.

The length of the modern Via dei Tribunali was determined by the urban expansion requirements of the Spanish starting in the early 16th century. The street runs from the church of San Pietro a Maiella and adjacent Naples Music Conservatory at the west end of the old city for about three-quarters of a mile, passing the central cross-road at via San Gregorio Armeno, then crossing via Duomo near the Cathedral of Naples and ending at what was, until quite recently, the main Naples courthouse (Italian: Tribunale), from which the street draws its name.

- Napoli. Inizia da Castel Capuano la tre giorni di protesta degli avvocati napoletani, in preparazione di una manifestazione nazionale a Roma il 20 febbraio. La road map è stata presentata in una conferenza stampa a Napoli dall'Oua (Organismo unitario dell'avvocatura) dal presidente Nicola Marino e dal presidente dell'Ordine degli avvocati di Napoli Francesco Caia. Al centro della protesta ci sono gli ultimi provvedimenti in materia di giustizia che, secondo l'avvocatura, hanno creato il caos (e moltiplicato i costi per le notifiche degli atti giudiziari). Ma è forte la polemica nei confronti del ministro Cancellieri, del quale sono state chieste nuovamente le dimissioni. (17.01.14)

- Napoli – Presentato il progetto di riqualificazione dei giardini antistanti Castel Capuano, organizzata dalla Quarta Municipalità in collaborazione con l'Unità tecnica-amministrativa della Presidenza del Consiglio dei ministri diretta da Nicola Dell'Acqua.

Un prato inglese, un sistema di irrigazione autorigenerante ed una nuova illuminazione ridaranno vita, luce e colore alle aiuole abbandonate per decenni davanti all'ingresso dell'ex Palazzo di giustizia e all'intera area circostante.

Come annuncia Armando Coppola, presidente della Quarta Municipalità, “grazie ad un accordo con la Presidenza del Consiglio dei ministri, che ha collaborato con noi sin dall'inizio, avendo nella vecchia sede del Tribunale gli uffici tecnico-amministrativi, martedì mattina presenteremo il progetto con cui partono i lavori di rifacimento delle aiuole antistanti l'ex cittadella giudiziaria del centro storico. Saranno piantumate nuove essenze arboree e floreali con un sistema di irrigazione automatica, piante con bacche colorate da cui si irradieranno luci dai mille colori e, soprattutto, una nuova illuminazione che restituirà dignità a tutta la zona circostante. Una zona da troppo tempo abbandonata a se stessa, che è ricca di storia e cultura e che auspichiamo torni ad essere il fiore all'occhiello dei Decumani, dove non si spara solo”.

“Questo progetto – sottolinea Coppola – è stato reso possibile grazie alla collaborazione con la Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, che lo ha finanziato. Tutto in un'ottica di riqualificazione ambientale e urbanistica dell'area, in cui si inserisce la nostra proposta di trasferire a Castel Capuano gli uffici della Municipalità, che lì avrebbe una sede strategica a tutto vantaggio dei cittadini”. The flanking corinthian columns flank the entrance, but the first level sculpture depicts a triumphal quadriga leading Alfonso parading. The second upper arch is surmounted by Lions and four niches with statues depicting the virtues of Alfonso. Above this is a rounded lintel with two genii with horns of plenty surmounted by Alfonso in attire of a warrior. This cornice was meant for an equestrian statue. The three statues of St Michael, St Anthony the Abbot, and St Sebastian, and the two recumbent ones, on the summit of the arch, are by Giovanni da Nola. Passing under this arch we enter the piazza by the Bronze Gates, executed by the monk Guglielmo of Naples, and representing in various compartments the victories of Ferdinand I over the Duke of Anjou and the rebellious barons.

Napoli - Avvocati, consegnate le Toghe d'Onore a Castel Capuano (16.04.16)

- Napoli – Il mondo della giustizia napoletana si è ritrovato del salone dei Busti di Castel Capuano, vecchia sede del tribunale civile, dove si è svolta la cerimonia di consegna delle Toghe d’Onore e delle Medaglie d’Oro.

Protagonisti i giovani iscritti all’albo degli avvocati che hanno ottenuto i voti migliori alla sessione d’esame e i “principi del foro” con 40 anni di iscrizione all’albo.

Insieme ai rappresentati dei vertici della giustizia partenopea, del sindaco Luigi de Magistris e del cardinale Crescenzio Sepe, arcivescovo metropolita di Napoli, presenti anche i due Premi Nobel per la Pace 2015, gli avvocati tunisini Abdelaziz Essid e Mohamed e Mohamed Ben Cheikh.

These are the names of four magnificent castles in the city's historic center: one is for defending the city walls, one is on a hill, and there are two to protect the harbor. The urban fortifications are added to the perimeter's defense system, which was mostly developed in the Aragonese era, with its fortresses on the islands of the archipelago and the extensive array of coastal fortifications, starting with the unassailable fortress of Gaeta.
Built at the end of the 13th century by King Charles I of Anjou, this beautiful castle stretching out to the harbor was called Castel Nuovo to distinguish it from the previous fortifications.
Today you'll have a hard time recognizing the traces of its original Gothic architecture, which was in the shape of an irregular quadrilateral with four defense towers and high walls with battlements with very narrow crevices; all that remains of the thirteenth-century structure is its base, with a deep moat that completely surrounds it and a large entrance door with a drawbridge.
Look at the grooved base of the cylinder-shaped towers: this was an excellent idea that combined the beautiful decorative effect with the practical function of diverting cannon balls!
The Palatina Chapel also dates back to the same time, which was then overhauled due to fires and collapses…

Castel Capuano si riapre alla città

In Castel Capuano, il 19 dicembre nella Biblioteca De Marsico il Direttore Regionale Gregorio Angelini, il Soprintendente Stefano Gizzi, il Presidente della Corte d'Appello Antonio Buonajuto e il Presidente della Fondazione Castelcapuano Floretta Rolleri, alla presenza dell'Assessore alla Cultura del Comune di Napoli Di Nocera hanno inaugurato la mostra documentaria e iconografica

Castel Capuano palazzo di Giustizia:

progetti di restauro e trasformazioni al tempo dell'Unità

in occasione del 150° anno dell'Unità Nazionale

Oggetto della mostra, allestita nella nuova aula espositiva a pianterreno del cortile principale, è il progetto di restauro elaborato tra il 1856 e il 1858 da Giovanni Riegler, ingegnere direttore del Corpo dei Ponti e Strade dell'amministrazione borbonica, pubblicato nel 1861 con una dedica piena di speranza al nuovo Stato unitario.

Sono presentati in mostra i grafici di mano di Riegler conservati nell'Archivio di Stato di Napoli, alternati alle litografie corrispondenti alle tavole perdute.

Intorno a questo nucleo di documenti sono esposti dipinti, acquerelli, stampe e disegni nei quali compare l'immagine di Castel Capuano, dal Seicento al Novecento, in particolare la Veduta della Vicaria al tempo di Masaniello, attribuita ad Ascanio Luciani e La veduta della facciata meridionale di Giuseppe Castiglione, commissionata per documentare lo stato dei luoghi prima del restauro. Un ampio apparato didattico e un video interattivo illustrano le trasformazioni dell'area e dell'edificio - da ciò che di epoca greco romana è sotto il castello, al periodo angioino, aragonese e vicereale, sino ai giorni nostri -- attraverso la cartografia storica e le testimonianze figurative.

Hanno collaborato con prestiti di opere il Museo di San Martino, la Pinacoteca Provinciale di Bari, la Provincia di Napoli, l'Archivio di Stato e diverse collezioni private.

La mostra, a cura di Amalia Scielzo e Annalisa Porzio, con la collaborazione del Servizio Educativo della Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e dell'Ufficio Scavi Napoli della Soprintendenza Archeologica sarà aperta dal 20 dicembre 2011 al 31 marzo 2012, nei giorni feriali: da lunedì al venerdì dalle 9 alle 18, sabato dalle 9 alle13, a cura dell'Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Napoli.

Particolarmente apprezzata è stata la performance fornita dall'artista Giuseppina Dell'Aria e dal suo team di attori al termine della presentazione.

Napoli - Biblioteca Castel Capuano, sala intitolata all’avvocato Flavio Zanchini (16.03.17)

- Napoli - A poco più di un anno dalla scomparsa Napoli celebra Flavio Zanchini, presidente dell'Ordine degli Avvocati, intitolandogli all'interno della Biblioteca di Castel Capuano, da lui diretta per oltre un decennio, una sala lettura.

Alla presenza dei familiari è stata mostrata la targa commemorativa e la sala, nel centro secolare di formazione legale. Ascoltiamo Roberto Fiore e Maurizio Bianco, rispettivamente presidente e segretario della Biblioteca Alfredo De Marsico.

Intervenuto all'inaugurazione il sindaco Luigi de Magistris, a cui è stato donato un quadro contenente il nome di suo nonno, che fu membro del consiglio della Biblioteca negli anni a cavallo tra la monarchia e la repubblica. Ascoltiamo il presidente dell'Ordine degli Avvocati di Napoli, Armando Rossi. (16.30.17)
