The Tramontano castle is located on a hill, called Lapillo hill, overlooking the historic center of the city of Matera. Aragonese style , the castle, with a central male and two lower side towers, one and the other round, scalloped and equipped with loopholes, was built starting from 1501 by Count Giovan Carlo Tramontano , feudal lord of Matera. The new king of Naples, Ferdinand II , had promised to the Materans to no longer surrender the city to any feudal lord, after it had already been liberated several times from the feudal yoke by paying several ransoms to remain free city to autonomous regiment, ie directly dependent on the Royal crown. Instead the count Tramontano, which boasted credits to the Royal Treasury, asked and obtained the county of Matera in 1496.
The count soon became unpopular to the materani as with the passage of time he was filled with debts, to cope with which he taxed the population with heavy taxes. Thus began the construction of the castle, which was located on a hill overlooking the city, outside the city walls, with the aim of feudal control of the surrounding land rather than defense of the city itself. It seems that then the building should have included other defense towers, one of which was found under the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto of Matera along with other hypogeal environments. For the construction of the castle were spent as many as 25,000 ducats and this weighed even more on the population.
So it was that some citizens, tired of the continuous abuses, gathered together behind a rock, which has since been called u pizzon 'du mal consigghj , that is the stone of bad advice, and organized the murder of the tyrant Tramontano. On December 29, 1514, the count, just out of the cathedral, was assassinated in a side street of the same, which was later eloquently called Via della Riscatto. The castle therefore remained unfinished. Since 2008, it is interested, together with the surrounding park, by restoration works still under way. Some of these interventions are aimed at the recovery of the moat with the restoration of the tufaceous walls.

The castle of Malconsiglio is the castle of Miglionico (Matera), built on a hill in the city starting from the VIII-IX century, in a strategic position, known for having hosted the Barons' Conspiracy in 1485. It had two successive enlargements, the first in 1110 and the second in the 1400s. It has the shape of a parallelogram, flanked by seven towers, some squares (the oldest), two briers and other circular ones, placed at the top of the building. The current entrance is in the north-east, while the original one destroyed by the Basilicata earthquake of 1857 was facing south. Inside, on the upper floor, there are the andrococe and the gynaeceus, the salon of the Malconsiglio, where the conspiracy was held, and the room of the Star or of the Spirits, the most beautiful and secret part of the castle, with the star-shaped ceiling and with treasure chests where the most precious treasures and documents were kept. It belonged to the Count Alessandro di Andria, to the Sanseverino of Bisignano, to Ettore Fieramosca, to the Pignatellis, to the Caracciolos and to the Revertera family, dukes of Salandra. The first phase shows a parallelogram system consisting of a single level above ground. This consideration in addition to verifying and acknowledging the statements made by Ricciardi regarding the antiquity of the ground floor with respect to the second in relation to the clearly identifiable presence of the battlements on the perimeter walls, also arises from the obvious typological and spatial differences of the environments especially in the wing of the Sala del Malconsiglio: the ground floor consists of a succession of rooms covered with cross vaults with elegant and slender ogival arches, while the upper floor is characterized by mighty round arches that mark the development of the vault barrel. The south-west area has a strictly quadrangular course, with the right wing wider than the left, but both spatially divided internally in a perfectly modular manner, and the transversal union arm which, just because it does not show such a geometric regularity, arouses some perplexity about constructive contemporaneity with the other two wings. This perplexity is evident also and above all in the lack of alignment of the right edge of the internal front, which is found at the second level in correspondence with the access to the Sala della Stella. This anomaly would lead us to think that the construction of this side took place after the superelevation of the other two and that the boundary wall was provided only with patrol walkways. Alternative to this hypothesis, more reliable, would be to consider the corner expedient realized after the earthquake for a more efficient distribution of access to the various environments. On the other hand, the gallery through which one enters the Sala della Stella is clearly a modern addition. A last consideration that comforts this thesis is constituted by another description of Ricciardi which, after having reported that: Entering in sum in the upper floor, after having traveled long row of rooms and rooms for two sides of the castle, arrived at northern side where in the north-east corner we see a small room called Sala della Stella ... it makes it clear that: These places are spoken of here as they were before December 16, 1857. For what happened then everything has now changed. This area constitutes the residential core of the castle. The body located to the north-east which contains the original access door and the so-called keep, of which we will talk later, develops in a triangular shape and constitutes a sort of antemurale, is the area reserved for soldiers. The perimeter walls of this plant are dotted with towers, circular at the top, quadrangular those in between. A similar system recalls similar Federician military factories: since there is no reference, however, in the copious literature relating to the fortified works of Frederick II, of the castle of Miglionico, probably its construction is later than this period and we could make it go up again at the half of the XIV century. On the other hand a careful reading of the architectural features would support this thesis: arched portals and windows, gothic vaults are frequent on the ground floor.
